  1. Per Adam McCalvy, here are Dan Bellino’s called strikes against the Brewers today... And here are the called strikes Corbin Burnes has gotten... Seems like Bellino isn’t seeing it well at the lower edges of the zone.
  2. Well here in the Optimism Thread I believe you mean it’s crystal clear that Yelich is on the verge of getting red hot.
  3. FanGraphs has playoffs odds graphs that show the changes over the course of the season, here is the NL Central playoffs odds graph. The lowest point for the Brewers over the past month was a 37.2 percent chance of making the playoffs on May 21. Somewhat interestingly that was still higher than any other team in the NL Central [other than the Brewers] currently has for playoff odds.
  4. The Brewers face southpaw Caleb Smith, a player they once selected in the Rule 5 draft (and immediately traded to the Cubs for cash). Smith had success with the Marlins prior to being included in the Starling Marte trade last season. Smith’s stats against the current Brewers hitters are solid, although both Avisail Garcia (2-for-5, HR) and Christian Yelich (3-for-6, 2 HR) have had success against him in a limited amount of at bats. Caleb Smith has only gone 5.0 IP once this year, and that was in his last appearance (he’s only started twice previously this season).

  6. Brewers win, Cubs lose... please welcome your first place Milwaukee Brewers.
  7. Brewers have hit 14 home runs over those 4 games which according to Adam McCalvy is tied for their second highest HR total over any 4 game stretch in franchise history. The franchise record is 15 HRs over 4 games back in 2002.
  8. The margin between not scoring any runs this inning and now having three runs was razor thin.
  9. How in the world did they allow Vogelbach to score there? He looked like he was going to be out by 10 feet. Terrible throw by Vogt, I don’t think he realized he didn’t need to rush it.
  10. I wish they would’ve shown the replay on Adames ball that Joe West called foul. It looked close enough to warrant another look for the viewers.
  11. Starts with two hits or less this year (from the big three starters)... Freddy Peralta has 6 total: 4 starts allowing one hit, 2 starts allowing two hits Corbin Burnes has 5 total: 2 starts allowing one hit, 3 starts allowing two hits Brandon Woodruff has 5 total: 2 starts allowing one hit, 3 starts allowing two hits
  12. Looking at the data they’ve already collected, apparently Cardinals fans listed the Cubs (59.2 points), Reds (10 points), Dodgers (7.1 points) and even the Pirates (4.7 points) as bigger rivals than the Brewers (4.4 points), here’s the Link. Brewers-Cardinals is listed as the 4th largest unbalanced rivalry in MLB at 46.9 points for Brewers fans and just 4.4 points for Cardinals fan, here’s that Link. Cubs fans listed the Brewers (9.3 points) as their third biggest rival behind the Cardinals (64.7 points) and White Sox (16.9 points). Twins fans listed the Yankees as their biggest rival (33 points) and the Yankees fans didn’t list the Twins as a rival at all. Obviously a case of one team not being able to beat the other in the playoffs.
  13. Really good article from Will Sammon of The Athletic: How Freddy Peralta became a major organizational win for the Brewers It was apparently Matt Kleine, now the Brewers’ vice president of baseball operations, that was the one who started following Peralta on the Arizona backfields in 2013 when he was just a 17-year old in the Mariners system. Kleine reportedly thought Peralta had first round talent (as compared to domestic 17-year olds eligible for the MLB Draft). In 2015 he advocated for Peralta’s inclusion in the Adam Lind deal, and convinced Stearns and Arnold (despite having only worked with them for a couple months at that point) to choose the deal that included Peralta over an offer on the table from another team for a more established prospect.
  14. The Diamondbacks have now lost 15 straight road games. Here’s hoping that streak continues for at least a couple more games.
  15. Brandon Woodruff: Batter (Diamondbacks) vs Pitching Stats Merrill Kelly: Batter (Brewers) vs Pitching Stats Statcast Game Preview for Diamondbacks-Brewers Statcast Game Feed for Diamondbacks-Brewers
  16. Count me as someone who would go Cubs (50%), Cardinals (40%), and Twins (10%). I would concede the fact that Cubs and Cardinals fans they view each other as top rivals, so that isn’t ideal from a Brewers perspective if you’re looking to have a true rivalry. I am a little surprised how few people list the Twins as a rival. Maybe it’s because I’ve had close friends who were Twins fans, but Brewers-Twins games are always some of my favorite to attend. I don’t think of it as a rivalry in the sense of “I hate this team”, but more so a rivalry between fan bases across the border from one another.
  17. According to Adam McCalvy... Before Freddy Peralta tonight, the last Brewers pitcher to get within five outs of a no-hitter was... Dave Bush on April 23, 2009 in Philly.
