  2. Right now I’m not sure you can use Perdomo in almost any game situation other than one where your down by 5+ runs late.
  3. It’s been mentioned previously in this thread, but the home/road splits for Willy Adames in Tampa were really stark... I looked this up, and apparently it was something he attributed to not being able to see the ball very well at the Trop. He even tried wearing nonprescription glasses to help with the issue, here’s an article from the Tampa Bay Times: Rays' Willy Adames trying glasses to boost home numbers Here are some of Adames’ quotes from the article: "I’ve been having a hard time picking up the ball the last two series,” said Adames, 25, who wasn’t in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Red Sox. "I could barely see the ball. I don’t know if it’s the air conditioning, the lights, I don’t know. “I’m just trying to figure out something to help me pick up the ball a little earlier. I’m just trying to figure out something so I can help the team a little bit more.” “You can see the difference in numbers,” he said. “Since the beginning of last year, I was having trouble, I guess. Every time we come from the road, it’s different in here. I don’t want to make an excuse of that. I’ve just been struggling here.” “It’s hard. Every time I come from the road and do something (well), I get here and I can’t help the team.”
  4. Both Keith Law (The Athletic) and Ginny Searle (Baseball Prospectus) wrote articles about the trade (subscription required)... Law: Willy Adames wends his way to Wisconsin, with Taylor Walls recalled, but whither Wander Franco? (The Athletic) Transaction Analysis: Brewers Add Adames, A Real Shortstop (Baseball Prospectus)
  5. The only Brewers player with more than one career hit off of Blake Snell is Jackie Bradley Jr. who is 6-for-20 with 4 doubles and one walk against Snell. Regardless, I would guess that JBJ will get the day off against the Padres lefty starter.

  7. Castillo apparently stinks now. Their bullpen is still a mess. [sarcasm]Reds should fire their pitching coach, IMO.[/sarcasm]
  8. I know this probably won’t be the case, but I wonder if that’s the sort of thing the home plate umpire will be able to pay better attention to once we have the automated strike zone.
  9. I wish Counsell would’ve left Freddy in for one more batter. Boxberger in this situation makes me very nervous.
  10. The only one of those four that looks like a whiff at this point is Ray. For the rest its still a little early to say. Even with hus struggles, Hiura has made more of an MLB impact (0.9 WAR) than any of the first round position players picked after him in 2017...Jo Adell (-1.5 WAR), Evan White (-0.4 WAR) or Brent Rooker (-0.6 WAR). Turang could end up Escobar/Arcia part III, though he's shown a much better approach with a 15% walk rate so far in the minors compared 5.3% for Alcides & 7.5% for Orlando, that's a pretty notable difference. Small was drafted #28. Anybody projected as a 1/2 starter is typically off the board by then. If Ethan ends up a 3/4 starter that would hardly be a whiff. If we’re going to criticize the Ray pick (which is fair, but that 1st round has turned out to be a bust for many teams), then we should probably mention they took Mario Feliciano in the 2nd round and Corbin Burnes in the 4th round of that same draft. On the whole that is looking like a decent draft even with the Ray pick. Also, I don’t believe Stearns has a lot to do with the amateur evaluation side of things for the draft. I don’t know that for certain, but a lot of GMs take a backseat to the scouting director when in comes to the MLB Draft.

  12. Trade article from FanGraphs: Willy Adames is Headed to Milwaukee Feyereisen pitched the 6th inning for the Rays tonight in what was a tie game at the time against the Blue Jays. He went 1.0 IP and didn’t allow a hit while striking out one (Bichette), walking one (Vlad Jr.), and inducing an inning ending double play (Teoscar Hernandez). The Rays new call up for shortstop, Taylor Walls, had two doubles in his debut. Also, this Rays-centric Twitter account has high hopes for Feyereisen: I do think both Feyereisen and Rasmussen were continuing to improve with the Brewers, and will likely do well with the Rays. Regardless, I am excited to see Willy Adames at shortstop in the coming years. The Brewers will now have Adames under control for his age-25 through age-28 seasons. I think there’s a decent chance Adames has a 4+ WAR season or two over that span. As much as this trade helps the shortstop position immediately, I think the biggest payoff for the Brewers is likely to be realized in the coming years. One other random observation, it sort of feels like this might be a big weight off of Luis Urias’ shoulders. He seemed to have bonded quickly with Arcia and spoke of how sad he was when he found out he’d been traded earlier this season. Urias came up through the minors with Fernando Tatis, and sort of took a complementary role to Tatis’ burgeoning stardom. I saw it reported that Urias met Adames during warmups with a big hug and the two were paired up throughout warmups. As silly as it might sound I am not really convinced Urias was totally comfortable in a position where he was the clear everyday shortstop. I think it’s at least possible he’ll be better in a lower pressure utility role.
  13. I noticed no one was here and thought there might be some basketball game pulling eyes away today, but I like the grass mowing theory even better.
  14. One thing I would be interested to find out is whether the Reds made a serious offer for Adames at some point over the past several months. When it was clear they needed a shortstop Adames was linked to them as a possibility, but I think it was more speculation based on the Reds need for a SS than any specific or verified trade rumor reporting.
  15. As much as it’s been a position of need, I agree that there was very little chance they were going to have a realistic chance at the top end of the upcoming shortstop market. It certainly makes sense for them to make a move now to secure the player they see slotting in at shortstop for the foreseeable future. I am excited to watch Adames play. I know he’s going to strike out a ton, but he certainly also makes plenty of loud contact. Welcome aboard, Willy.
  16. Several current Brewers have had past success against Sonny Gray, but unfortunately Avisail Garcia isn’t one of them. Garcia is just 1-for-18, with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks against Gray. Hopefully it just means he’s due for some success against Gray.
  17. He’s in the lineup batting 6th this afternoon. Urias is playing 2B, batting 8th. EDIT: Lineup now added to the opening post.
  18. Believe it or not, the current collection of Brewers hitters have a career 1.008 OPS against Sonny Gray in a combined 120 plate appearances. Those stats do NOT even include newcomer Willy Adames who is 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 walks in 5 plate appearances against Sonny Gray.

  20. If you want a “great” arm then I’ll agree with you that isn’t how I would describe Urias. I was commenting specifically on the fact “poor” and “weak” were being used to describe his arm strength, not arm accuracy or mental acumen/issues. Coming up as a prospect he was consistently graded to have above-average arm strength, and from everything I’ve seen it’s at the very least average arm strength. Also, I wasn’t trying to use the throwing errors as some example of having arm strength, actually the opposite. I was attempting to point out that the throwing errors had nothing to do with a lack of arm strength, but I could’ve done a better job making that point more clear. If we’re comparing Arcia and Urias, then I agree with you that Arcia would win that battle. I am always open to being proven wrong, I guess in this case I just haven’t seen any video evidence to suggest he can’t make at least average strength throws across the diamond (now accuracy is a different question). I wish Baseball Savant would expand their throwing velocity readings to infielders, but that doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, unfortunately. Anyway, at this point we obviously disagree so we can probably leave it at that. I do apologize if I came off as snarky or condescending, I should have dialed down my initial comments a bit because the tone was off the mark (sort of like an Urias throw at times, I guess ).
