  1. The Brewers already have a few mediocre 1B vets in Francisco & Reynolds. They really need a 3rd? Wouldn't it be better to give Morris the at-bats that Overbay is getting in Spring Training and give him more experience and a longer look? What experience is there to be gained by a few more spring training ab's on the major league side that he hasn't already had? He's already been to one so the whole "get used to the way they do things" isn't there. Then add in the amount of extra playing time he will get in minor league games vs sitting on the bench on the major league side and I see more experience to be gained this way.
  2. Apparently we now know what happened to our long track skaters this season. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/olympics/dutch-coach-blames-football-for-us-speedskatings-troubles-b99211194z1-246672541.html Pretty hilarious that the guy whose country hasn't won a single medal in any other sport in the Olympics is telling the country that has won the most they are too focused on one sport.
  3. Keep in mind he is only 27. He's been on a steady trajectory up and hitting his prime years. At best he is a budding ace. At worst, barring injury, is he is a middle of the road pitcher making too much money. All in all he might be overpaid but not by a whole lot when indexed to the rising salaries. I think it's a risk that he is going to be even better, but given his advancement so far it doesn't seem like an insane bet even if he doesn't.
  4. Early in his career I remember him going against Sheets a few times and thinking he might be better than Sheets each time. Kind of always followed his career after that. Hope he doesn't carry any "what if" thoughts in his retirement.
  5. I'm shamelessly pimping a book from a friend of mine. "The Official Book of Mob Humor" by Malcolm Kushner. While he is a friend of mine I wouldn't do so if it didn't combine my love of humor with my fascination of mob stories. If you're looking for something different give it a shot.
  6. Winter doesn't have to be bad. Just got to have a dog or two. http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/d1c5bc0c-d1e0-4be1-90f9-4bed4f91e529.jpg http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/9afed376-bc36-4ee1-a64a-2f356b297562.jpg http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/e8dc38b4-7018-4264-ac12-3bcc5916008a.jpg http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/592ee951-7eef-496e-b2a3-17af0ce7e10a.jpg http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/88668a96-fc23-40f2-9c67-4d81334c9db1.jpg Ok so this isn't winter. I just found this pic of Milton. He is Teotoe993's dog. Had to put him in there since he is about as cool as they come. In winter even cooler.
  7. I'd rather have depth in talent though, rather than just depth in numbers... Once we get past Nelson, I don't have a lot of faith in what's left... I agree what we have past Nelson isn't great but they are serviceable past that. I think some of those guys can come in and help in the pen and maybe be a swing guy like Estrada was a couple season's ago. Those guys are never going to wow you but they have considerable value as spot starters and bullpen innings eaters when injuries or stretches of ineffectiveness rear their ugly heads. Helping keep the team afloat while the main guys work their way out of slumps or injury has value. Witness what Fiers did a couple seasons ago or what Estrada did when Greinke started the season on the DL.
  8. Ok MadScientist. I'm moving away from the ledge now. Thanks.
  9. He's 80? That sucks. It means he will only be an announcer for another 20 years or so.
  10. I love having our own weatherman here.
  11. She makes me go out for a couple hours every day no matter the weather. It's kind of like a four legged personal trainer/therapist for winter blues.
  12. What do you mean you want to go in? It's hardly snowing, almost zero out and you have gloves.
  13. The fear is having another Suppan situation. An older pitcher is added who is worthless near the end of the contract when the Brewers make the playoffs. I think that fear is valid but I don't know if paralysis by fear is the best way to operate. Which is why I think Melvin and Attanasio are on the same page when it comes to risk. They are willing to go out on a limb and live with the consequences. I also think the fear of another Suppan deal is getting way overblown. At the time they had serious problems getting free agents to consider Milwaukee and they knew they were overpaying him when they did it. That is not what happened with Lohse and now Garza. Most people seem to be in agreement that the contracts are pretty team friendly for the type of pitchers they are getting. Yes they could blow up. But so could relying on the youngsters.
  14. We were not a playoff team last year with or without Lohse. Even without the injuries and with Lohse we were a low 80's win team. There is no way all those injuries and missed time add up to 16 wins. But why are you so focused on the first year of the deal? There is no single player that suddenly makes a team a contender. Not even Greinke did that. It takes a combination of moves to make a team a contender. But that combination doesn't have to all come in the same off season. Adding Garza would be a lot less helpful getting us back into playoff contention without having Lohse on board already.
  15. Amazing how much you read into a simple statement. Pity it was nowhere near accurate. Maybe some day you will have something to say that isn't condescending or insulting. Can't say I'm holding my breath. Or that I care one iota what you feel this board should be about or what I should say on it.
  16. Thank God we signed Kyle Lohse. We won 74 games. I personally would've preferred letting the young guys take their lumps and who cares what the record was. 65 wins instead of 74? What's the difference? If the team ends up winning a pennant this season is that deal still bad? Judging a three year deal on the team record of the first year of that deal seems premature.
  17. What about the pitches that enter the strike zone? I don't want to go too far on this here but he couldn't get his curve over for a strike. Then he had to come in with his very straight fastball. He didn't need to tip his pitches for them to know what was coming. IF it was his curve it was out of the zone so don't bother looking for it. So they only had to look fastball. Even here on the occasions he got both his pitches over he did very well. The problem was he's just very streaky getting the curve over.
  18. Then as soon as Axford gets to St Louis they fill him in on how he's been tipping his pitches and he improves dramatically. I'm not sure how tipping your pitches makes you miss the strike zone by three feet.
  19. Up until you said that I thought you had enough credibility to be a reporter. No self respecting reporter ever admits to being completely wrong let alone apologize for it.
  20. Chinooks fan!!!??? Heretic!!! Heathen!!! Sincerely, A Bullfrog fan.
  21. Which person is out there that, A) Is worth the money he got paid B) wouldn't cost a draft pick or C) wouldn't cost us more in a trade than the player is worth? You don't just dial 1-800-1stbase and order one tailor made for your team.
  22. Almost as significant as Jeff Suppan retiring.
  23. Aside from Gennett's success in 40 ABs vs. LHP last year, are years in the minors in which he was far less successful vs. LHP (both starters & relievers). Weeks over his career has been far more successful vs. LHP (both starters & relievers) than Gennett. That is what people are saying. If Weeks and Gennett are on the roster come opening day (and that's a point for debate), then it would be more productive to have Weeks start at 2B vs. LHP. Don't you have to take into account age so some extent when judging what someone might do going forward? Weeks has a history of being really bad coming off injuries as well. Gennett, on the other hand, is likely to get better as he adjusts to the majors and hits his prime years. -- They aren't moving Rickie anywhere, without paying most of his salary. The 11 million is going to be paid. If they don't want him on the roster and are on the hook for the salary anyway why not pay most of his salary? If they get a bag of balls and have to pay 10.5 million of his contract they will still save 1/2 a million. Even if they had to pay the entire salary they would still get the proverbial bag of balls. I think if he shows he is healthy in spring there will be some team willing to take a shot on him at the right price.
  24. I think we need to let the system work for a few more years before we judge its effects. It will take a few more players like Lohse going into spring training without a team and having to sign a relatively team friendly contract you will see more of the accept the QO. It can take a few years before the risks of not accepting a QO are fully realized so it will take some time to judge the effects the system has over the long haul. If Morales ends up with less money than he would have in years past combined with what happened with Lohse last season I could see the number of accepted QO's going up next season. If next years version of Lohse ends up that way it would affect the 2015 group even more. While some teams may be able to afford them it doesn't mean they want them. Being stuck with a guy you wanted to replace might not be worth a draft pick. Especially for a the teams who can afford them. The value of a draft pick isn't as high as it is for a low revenue team. They can always buy the player they want. Hell they can buy a couple a year and get them for even lower draft picks. It only took a second rounder for the Yankees to get Sabathia because they bought Teixeira the same year.
  25. I think that lack of people publicly coming to his defense is telling. Whether that is because the article slanted it that way or there was nobody willing to come to his defense I don't know.
