  1. They won't be asked to go 6+ very often so I don't think it's all that big of a deal. That said, I also wouldn't be shocked if one of them struggled. That's pretty natural for young pitchers. But they have to get a shot for us to know who is capable.
  2. That's how I view it. This seems like something teams did ten years ago then learned their lesson.
  3. Do you think Moustakas would be better? Beyond the "click bait" part of my title, the main point was to put Arcia in a position to field a higher percentage of balls than anyone else on our infield. 90% of Arcia's value is in his defense. So I'm advocating that with an infield of Shaw, Arcia, Moose, and Aguilar/Thames, I'd put Arcia wherever the metrics say he will get the most balls. Among those 5 players, he is by far the best defender at SS/2B. And probably 3B/1B too. I've read comments from Counsell that the defense is based on Arcia anyway so I wouldn't be surprised if they already plan on doing something like that.
  4. I don't know how MLB can do anything about it. The players aren't owners or representatives of management so they aren't subject to tampering like people who represent management. FWIW I get your concern. I just don't think it's something that MLB can do anything about without a major legal battle on their hands.
  5. This. There is no need to have him starting in the majors right away which would only add stress to the situation. Let him get his feet under him and continue to stretch out to full strength without the added pressure to win games. If by some change he looks really great early on in AAA then bring him up.
  6. This is why it's nice to have legit pitching depth. We can probably deal with his loss better than any team in the division. I feel bad more for him more than the team.
  7. Guess collusion talk can be put away for a while.
  8. I'm not saying it never works out for the team. I'm saying I don't think your reason is why teams offer them in the first place. I think it's because the player wants it. I do think it might limit some of the danger of long term deals thus a reason why some teams are willing to take the gamble. Which perhaps is what you meant. But I doubt the team in the one that wants it in there to begin with.
  9. The reason teams include opt outs is it because it gives them the opportunity to reap the rewards of the front end of the contract while potentially missing out on the risk at the back end. A player is only going to opt out if they think they can get more money by doing so, which means they've performed well to that point. If they opt out the original team can let another team pay for the player's older/riskier years & reinvest that saved money elsewhere. I don't see the advantage for the team in giving the player the option. If he is worth more he opts out and gets paid more. If he isn't worth more he doesn't opt out and the team is stuck overpaying him. There may be some players who overestimate their value but banking in it is a pretty huge risk.
  10. While that is a valid point, I don't know if it's as simple as comparing home road splits. I have heard several players say hitting there is very different than anywhere else. One would think hitting half the time in Coors makes it harder to adjust to hitting in other parks.
  11. It's not good news but I don't think it's very bad at this point. There is a difference between rehab and regular spring training workouts. A setback in rehab usually means something is still wrong or not as far along as they hoped. Arm fatigue or soreness is relatively common in spring even for players not coming off surgery. Someone coming off a year not pitching is bound to have more of that sort if thing. My guess before this was he was going to need more than just spring training to get all the way back to pitching shape and this just reinforces that. My hope is, and always was, to get him back full strength in May but wouldn't be surprised if it was June or so.
  12. Had that criticism been based on the regular season I'd agree. There is no excuse for not running hard every time in the playoffs.
  13. Are we supposed to send flowers or something?
  14. Appleton's parking regulations have to change. Today the only parking spot available was in a spot that said 1 hour parking only. I only to be there for 15 minutes. Why the hell should I have to wait another 45 minutes before I can leave?
  15. The Westminster dog show is sponsored by Purina. Which is funny because no dog owner in that show would ever feed their dog Purina dog food.
  16. Dungarees, overalls and bibs are all the same. I have no idea which term is used nowadays but we used to call them farmer pants.
  17. Cold brewed coffee used to be called a toddy. I think it was because the first cold brewer was called toddy. Same as my grandma always calling the refrigerator a Frigidaire.
  18. Taxi is one of those shows I can watch and laugh no matter how many times I've seen it before. Same with Married With Children and WKRP in Cincinnati.
  19. Today I had to make balloon animals for a clown's funeral.
  20. Is it just me or does it seem like people drive slower when it's below zero?
  21. Yeah I have no idea what they are doing. As strong as the division is they should be selling off and rebuilding. That's the way it looks to me but I had no idea what the Braves were doing last offseason either and it seemed to work for them. As far as looking at what the division is doing I think that is a fool's errand. Had the Brewers tried to rebuild based off of when they thought the Cubs and Cardinals would be beatable again this team would have a bunch of great AA players right about now.
  22. They must have been busy watching the Brewers when they got eliminated. Going to see a lot of copies of "BrewerBall" this year. Yankees are going all in with it, saw that the Giants are going to implement it as well. It is the fate of successful small market teams to invent new ways to compete only to have big market teams copy the strategy and add a billion dollars to it. The one thing they can't buy is team options. Judging how Stearns has worked to get more players with options this off season it appears to me going the Brewers route includes expanding the working roster to 30 players. Free agents don't allow that.
  23. On my way home I was debating whether to walk the dogs before or after I went to the grocery store. A couple blocks from my house the street was blocked off. I went over a block and it was blocked too. I asked the officer what was wrong and if I could get through to my house. He said it was an active shooter situation on the 300 block of Wisconsin ave. Which is the block my house is on. I went shopping first.
  24. While the QO has traditionally lower than what a player could get in free agency that may not always be the case. As reillymcshane pointed out it was essentially there so the team could get some compensation for losing a player. If the free agent market stays this slow one way to boost the market may be for more players to accept the QO. I wouldn't do anything for the Harper's or Machado's of the market but obviously the Grandal or Moustakas types wouldn't lose much. If enough accept to QO it might make teams stop offering it players they really don't want. Then the player would just be selling his service without having a draft pick attached to it.
  25. Are the annual salaries dropping or are there just fewer long term contracts being handed out? Obviously one effects the other but I see more deals like this coming out where the player gets a good short term payday but can't get the long term payday. Or at least won't settle for a lower AAV in exchange. I wonder at what point more players start to accept qualifying offers. Granted Grandal's contract shows it's still better to test the waters- which was his part of the point he was making- but at some point it may become better to take the one year guaranteed money. It would force the team not to offer it if they only wanted the compensation pick and allow them to shop their services without the worry of that compensation pick messing with his value.
