The Brewers of the last several years seem to operate on a lot of "ifs" If Braun can return to form If our starting pitching stays healthy If Segura can play like he did in the 1st half of 2013 If Davis can develop more If Scooter can hit lefties That is a whole of of "maybes" that have to all jump right for the Crew to contend. It doesn't usually work out. Signing Aramis in the 1st place was one big "if". They dodged a bullet of some sorts, rolling the dice on the 1st three years of that contract and getting their money's worth But now he's gonna be 37 and he is in decline. It is time to move on. Of course, if Melvin didn't continually trade prospects for "maybes" and "Ifs", the Brewers could still have Brett Lawrie as a young affordable talent who could play 3B and/or platoon with Scooter at 2nd (and could have spent the Ramirez money on pitching talent equal to or better than Marcum). Despite only playing 70 games last year, Lawrie had a 1.7 WAR, nearly as much as Aramis' 2.1 -
Being considered a better manager than Ron Roenicke or Ken Macha hardly makes one "great" I think the way Mark A handled the Yost situation, firing him like he did with just a week or two left in the season, was very bush league and cheap. That the Brewers seem to be bungling their manager position ever since hardly seems like a surprise

Headley had a 4.4 WAR last year. A good solid defensive player. He's the exact type of player the Brewers don't have enough of (a plus defender who can work the count --- his OBP is consistently 80+ points higher than his BA). Bonus points that he hits RHP better than LHP Ramirez ranked 14th among 3B's in the MLB in WAR last year at 2.1, tied with David Freese and just .1 ahead of Casey McGehee He was, however 8th in SLG and 5th in BA, 10th in wOBA according to Fangraphs On the surface that all seems OK, but he's going to be 37 years old and seems like the exact type of aging player Melvin has made mistakes on in the past -

Would like to see the Brewers pass on Ramirez. That money could be better spent elsewhere -
Smith was/is incredibly valuable, it is just that Roenicke completely abused & overused him. I suppose if one was to factor in the likelihood that Roenicke would overuse Smith, then yes the trade was foolish. Hopefully Smith will still have plenty left in the tank once Roenicke is gone and a smarter manager brought in

A few things breaking our way? Like Roenicke not starting Kotsay in CF? Or Melvin trading for Furcal instead of St Louis getting him and the Brewers being stuck with Yuni B? That kinda thing? My thesis is that as compared to their peers the Brewers organization, especially GM & Manager, seem below average

I'm not saying it is Roenicke or Macha's fault that we haven't gone to a World Series, but I do suspect that Yost is a better manager than those 2

They bat 1,2,3 in a World Series lineup and Escobar plays SS and Cain plays CF. If they aren't cornerstones nobody is....

Kansas City made it to the World Series, the Brewers didn't The point of trading all those good players for Greinke was to make it to the World Series, right? Or was it just to "be a contender and make the playoffs?" Is it also safe to say that Ned Yost is a better manager than anyone the Brewers hired since Yost was fired? Finally, is that main point that Dayton Moore is a better GM that Doug Melvin? Or is it simply that the KC owner meddles less than Mark A? Or none of the above? (It is all just a series of unrelated coincidences)

Baseball always comes down to pitching & defense. Which, not surprisingly, is the exact reason the Brewers have zero World Series titles

The first thing I'd do is fire Doug Melvin & hire Craig Counsell as GM. I could see Counsell hiring Dale Sveum as manager and letting Roenicke go, and I'd be OK with that. I'd bring in someone from the Cardinals to head up my scouting dept I'd see if I could overpay for Bryce Harper. Something like Carlos Gomez & Garza for Harper I'd retain Gallardo, let Ramirez walk Sign Adam LaRoche and Ben Zobrist -
You think the Crew jump Coulter to AA this season? I was thinking they'd start him at A+, see how goes, then move him mid-season if he's hitting well. I'm thinking AA will have Taylor, Reed and Roche in the OF to start 2015. You are probably correct.....

It is worth considering that Coulter put up .287/.410/.520 with 22 homers while getting beat up at Catcher. It is entirely possible that his bat is even better than what we've seen so far. I agree that his arm is too good to just put him at 1B. Sure, they can move him to 1B if RF is a failure. Yes, our MLB OF could use upgrades If he rakes in AA, we could possibly see him in MLB in the 2nd half of 2015 even, certainly by 2016. Listening to former MLB player Brad Woodall on the Timber Rattler broadcasts, he describes Coulter as an elite hitter

It is pretty disappointing but what is done is done. Clearly Mark A & Doug think they can field a winner in 2015. It'll be interesting to see what moves they make with the roster this winter. I'll keep rooting for the Brewers, of course

That is a silly mistake by Baltimore, giving that kind of money to a 32 year old SS who has had his OPS+ over 100 once in the last 6 years and posted a .309 OBP and .372 SLG last year

Harper is going to completely light up the postseason. He was 2 for 4 with a HR today. The Nationals aren't going to trade him

Way too many holes. Way too many hitters that are only productive if they are hitting HR's. Not enough hitters who can play small ball, work a count, move a runner over etc... when your HR hitters aren't hitting bombs in a given week, you need some small ball and great pitching and solid fundamentals on defense to grind out some wins.... and the Brew Crew has very little of any of that.... Doug Melvin designed the team that way, he's not gonna get fired, so not much is gonna change.... Maybe things will change starting in 2016 after Melvin retires -
Remember that HR he hit in Houston that dented the train? When he got a hold of one they went out in a hurry!

Personally I wouldn't retire a number for Selig or have a statue of him at the park. I sincerely think he's been one of the All-Time worst commissioners and while I'm very thankful that he brought Baseball back to Milwaukee that does not supersede him looking the other way during the steroid era and all the other countless distasteful things he presided over. But that's just me

My lasting memories of Weeks will be what a tough guy he was. How he got hit in the face with a pitch and stayed in the game. How he was always the first player out of the dugout whenever the benches cleared. How much he always hustled. How quickly his HR's left the ballpark. Laser shots. How he worked the count and took pitches to help his team. The Brewers could use about 10 players with Weeks' attitude and a lot less Ryan Braun types.

Career stats: Weeks 140 HR's - .247 BA - .346 OBP - 103 OPS+ Kinsler 144 HR's - .272 BA - .350 OBP - 111 OPS+ B Phillips 130 HR's - .272 BA - .322 OBP - 100 OPS + Weeks compares fairly well, offensively, to a few of the best in the biz... he just wasn't able to stay consistently healthy
