  1. Since we traded LaPorta and Brantley for CC Sabathia, I wonder if the Indians would give us LaPorta and a prospect for Greinke (!)
  2. Just a guess in terms of the platoon thing, but I think it comes from Roenicke's connections to the old Earl Weaver Orioles through his brother Gary and also the Narron brothers. Earl Weaver was big on platoons and Gary Roenicke was a big part of a platoon in the outfield on the 1983 World Champion Orioles
  3. as poorly as Lincecum was pitching, we should've put up 7 runs in the first 2 innings...but a Win is a Win and I'll take it
  4. In terms of K-Rod, I think teams get kind of hesitant with closers from year to year, because historically they collapse unpredictably. And K-Rod has been on somewhat of a decline for a few years now and every GM in baseball knows that at some point K-Rod won't have it anymore and they have to be wondering if that time is now... granted he is only 30 years old so chances are he'll still be valuable for a few years but you never know Put it this way: would you give up a lot in a trade for Heath Bell or Carlos Marmol right now?
  5. He must be really messed up. There has gotta be something going on with him behind the scenes that the public doesn't know about.... otherwise he'd have trade value as opposed to just releasing him
  6. Wow! Really?! They spend all those years developing him and then just give up on him? Things must be really bad with Braddock.
  7. I like the idea of Kottaras playing 1B as well, especially against RHP, and if I recall correctly there was some talk of Conrad being an emergency catcher in spring training which would eliminate a need to bring up a 3rd catcher (would much rather have Maldanado getting regular starts for Nashville)
  8. Until K-Rod strings together several great games in a row, we're not gonna get much for him, considering his salary and how he's looked. And again, in Mark A's eyes and Melvin's eyes, K-Rod is a big part of how we can contend for a title this year. I'd be very pleasantly shocked if the Brewers front office made any moves in 2012 that would help the Brewers of 2013 or 2014. I think the mentality, for better or worse, is a perpetual "win now"
  9. yes it is way too early to start thinking about selling, in large part because of ticket sales/public relations/public perception. I see Mark A as being a very reluctant seller anyways. In fact I wouldn't be shocked if the Brewers are never sellers during the entire time Mark A owns the franchise. It'd be much more likely that the Brewers will overpay for a 1B and starting pitcher in order to try to get back in it, furthering mortgaging the future with the quote by Mark A being "we owe it to our fans...."
  10. I can't imagine that the Brewers would actually think of that as their solution. I think it is much more likely that Hart plays 1B with Ishikawa and Conrad in bench roles I don't expect Conrad to do much more than hit .250-.260 with a .330 OBP, but he is an easy guy for me to root for in that he all-out hustles all the time. A good player in a utility role
  11. Conrad has played only 1 game in his MLB career at 1B (He's played 50 games at 3B and 32 games at 2B) Although he's a switch-hitter, Conrad has been more successful as a RHB vs LHP (.268 BA and a .358 OBP in 71 at-bats) Conrad was batting .400 in 50 AB's in AAA this year. Conrad is 32 years old, he has hit .254 with a .333 OBP in 2396 AB's in his AAA career
  12. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/150075995.html#!page=0&pageSize=10&sort=newestfirst
  13. It might be more of an organizational philosophy of going with high risk/high reward high school pitchers in the past (Jones, Rogers, Jeffress), pitchers that had a few known mechanical flaws that could (and did) lead to injury but also had amazing stuff. More that they rolled the dice on risky phenoms as opposed to some sort of flaw in the Brewers development system They seem to have switched gears recently going with mostly college pitchers. Ben Sheets should be added to the short list along with Gallardo of home grown pitchers who were a success
  14. I really think a lot of the Brewers' troubles in developing starting pitching has just been bad luck with injuries. Mike Jones had great stuff, (a 2.40 ERA at age 20 in AA ball). Mark Rogers is another one.
  15. I take it into account but occasionally take it with a grain of salt. An example: those of us who think Cal Ripken Jr is overrated (in the context of All-Time greats) will not be as enamored of WAR. Just because there were not a lot of SS's in Ripken's time who hit for power (thus raising his WAR scores) does that mean that Ripken Jr was better than say, Barry Larkin? I don't think so.
  16. Hart at 1B does seem to make sense with Morgan & Aoki getting more playing time in the OF and either Gindl or Schaeffer up from AAA ball. I'm not sure that Ron Roenicke will feel like Travis Ishikawa's sample of just 31 plate appearances is enough to prove that a .226 OBP won't cut it, but I've long been advocating that Brooks Conrad should replace Iskikawa on the roster. Not that I think Conrad is going to be raking in MLB, but he's more valuable than Ishikawa. If Travis Ishikawa is going to receive significant playing time then you can pretty much kiss playoff hopes goodbye unless Greinke & Gallardo all of a sudden start pitching like Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens
  17. Actually, in 2014 it'd be a "nice core" with Braun, Gallardo & Lucroy. Hart is signed through 2013. Are you advocating extending Hart in a "rebuild"? Ramirez should not be counted on to be top-flight in 2014. Gonzalez would be 37 years old in 2014. I do like some of our prospects in the minors, and I'm not saying I have all the answers, plus of course it really depends on who we get back in these trades but I'm not sure we need to trade away every player outside of Braun & Lucroy & Gallardo Weeks is signed through 2014 with a team option of 2015. Hart is signed through 2013. It might make more sense to trade Hart in a rebuild than Weeks. We have several outfield prospects who could replace Hart. Gennett has potential to hit lots of singles and doubles but we have no-one with the power potential of Weeks at 2B
  18. I'd actually prefer a Aoki/Kottaras platoon. i.e. Kottaras at 1B vs RHP with Hart in RF, and then Aoki in RF vs LHP with Hart at 1B
  19. Wow, is their pitching depth that depleted? A 12 something ERA in AAA? At first glance I thought this was a very late April Fools Joke
  20. Rickie probably could use a day off but will get one on Thursday. It'd be easier to give him a day off if Izturis wasn't our only other option at 2B! That said, wouldn't be surprised if Izturis gets a start somewhere tomorrow which would give someone (Ramirez, Gonzales or Weeks) 2 days off in a row
  21. Here is the Brewers' lineup: 2B Rickie Weeks CF Norichika Aoki LF Ryan Braun 3B Aramis Ramirez RF Corey Hart 1B Mat Gamel SS Alex Gonzalez C Jonathan Lucroy RHP Shaun Marcum
  22. I suppose part of what makes Braun "Braun" is his aggressiveness at the plate, going after particular pitches especially if he finds what he's looking for early in the count.
  23. Ryan Braun played less than 2 seasons in the minors. (47 games of Rookie Ball in 2005, a full Minor League season in 2006, and just 34 games in AAA in 2007 before being called up.) I don't think the Brewers are adverse, as an organization, to bringing up a phenom quickly
  24. Seriously though, Braun's Slugging % of .561 places him at #16 All-Time. That is ahead of Willie Mays & Mickey Mantle among others (yes I realize that Mantle & Mays had a long decline prior to retirement). http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/slugging_perc_career.shtml Braun's OBP of .369 places him at 273rd all-time, which is still better than George Brett & Ichiro so it isn't like he is horrible at getting on-base, but I think he could be so much more of a dangerous offensive player if he walked a lot
