  1. The Tampa connection is strong with Matt Arnold
  2. If it is Archer & Arrieta I'd be thrilled. Question: do you think Burnes will still be in the Brewers organization in March?
  3. Welcome "old hickory", good to have you on board
  4. My guess is the "small talks NL team" is/was the Mets I think the higher end pitcher still will be either Darvish or Arrieta
  5. Hader would be an untouchable, to me, unless it is part of a fictional trade for 5 years of Kershaw. Even just out of the bullpen Hader could be the next Andrew Miller. That is incredibly valuable. Teams need 3 or 4 truly great relief pitchers to win a World Series most years. We're partway there, maybe, with Hader & Knebel, I wouldn't mess with that.
  6. We've been to the playoffs twice in Mark's time... During both the 2008 and 2011 playoff runs, we heard about payroll limits. We had Yuni B as a shortstop in the playoffs! I'm not sure I want to open up a can of worms in rehashing the Macha or Roenicke hirings or the way too long leash on Melvin, or the meddling in getting taken by Suppan's agent etc, but to me saying that Mark has been brilliant is a complete stretch. Just because you are better than Wendy Selig does not equate to brilliant. We are in a unique position where teams that would usually outbid us are holding back in order to get under luxury tax limits for next year's free agent free for all. There is no reason why the Brewers cannot afford to outbid everyone for Darvish or Arrieta. The franchise will survive. Mark and his buddies will still be filthy rich...
  7. TPlush, are you kidding? The artificial limits the Brewers put on payroll are maddening. I want to see the Brewers win a World Series, I don't care if Mark's hobby is profitable for him.
  8. Quadrupled. The value has quadrupled. Bought for $250 million, now estimated at 1 Billion. I don't wanna hear any "cry me a river" for poor Mark. He either needs to open up the pocket books or sell the team, otherwise he is just another fake owner more concerned about $$$ than World Series rings
  9. Odorizzi and Archer have almost identical ERA+ numbers over the last 3 years. I realize that stat isn't the be all and end all of pitching stats....but still Also Archer's best ERA+ season was 120something, which pales in comparison to the 160 ERA+ that Chase Anderson put up last year
  10. I'm going to predict that the Brewers trade for Jake Odorizzi after being unable to strike up a deal for Archer. It'll be something like Broxton plus Ortiz for 2 years of Odorizzi. If the Rays want Santana plus Hiura and Burnes for Archer, that is just too much... So my prediction is they'll sign either: Arrieta or Cobb And trade for Odorizzi
  11. I just don't trust Anderson, Nelson or Chacin to "get hot" at the right time in the postseason. Such a scenario reminds me of the 2008 playoffs, and even then we had CC and a young Gallardo but got outmatched by the Phillies vaunted staff. And CC was worn out from the stretch run just to get there. I realize times have changed since 10 years ago and bullpens are more important than ever before, but fortunately it appears that Stearns recognizes that our starting pitching is a weak point if we are contending, and is working to do something about it.
  12. The 8th best rotation doesn't win us a World Series. Our goal is not to hang another goofy Wild Card banner. Look at what Verlander did for Houston. We need a game changer
  13. I don't know if someone like Darvish or Arrieta has any idea how much they'd be loved in Wisconsin if they signed with the Brewers. It'd be similar to when Reggie White signed with the Packers. They'd be treated like Gods, especially if the Brewers won their first World Series with them....I know the dollar comes first, but a top pitcher signing with the Brewers could put them on a rock star level of fandom. This is the right place at the right time, get on board the train is about to leave the station!
  14. I don't think Lynn moves the needle tremendously, and while I love Cobb's talent, I don't trust his durability. Corbin is just a one year thing. The "Big 3" to me are Darvish, Arrieta, and Archer. One of those 3 becoming a Brewer makes the Cubs start to sweat a bit....
  15. The Giants, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Mariners, Tigers, Rangers, Orioles, Padres, and Phillies are some teams that could get seriously involved in the bidding on at least some of the big guys. I honestly wouldn't doubt seeing close to 2 billion worth of contracts signed next offseason. Heck Harper/Kershaw/Machado might get 1 billion on their own. The more the best free agents get spread out among a lot of different teams, the better it is for the Brewers.... Because these next 3-4 years are our window to reach for the ring. You look at the offense the Yankees are putting together and then if they sign Kershaw & Keuchel? How do you compete with that? Stearns is well aware of all of this, on a level none of us can fathom. All the more reason to make a huge push at signing Darvish or Arrieta in the next few days. It isn't just about 2018, it is about the aftermath of next winter's free agent gold rush, too.
  16. Corbin for Broxton? I'd do that in a minute. We already have Phillips as a 4th Outfielder....
  17. I like Heyman but that really read as "there is no news, but I'm under contract to get a story written so here you go"
  18. Re 2019: after the big boys sign up Kershaw, Keuchel, Harper, Machado, Familia, Kimbrel, Donaldson, LeMahieu, Blackmon, Britton etc we might be in a position to sign a "lesser" free agent like a Jurickson Profar or Nathan Eovaldi, but.... Yeah, I mean the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers can't sign all of them
  19. Meeting is to discuss whether a bunch of us from Brewerfan.net can be appointed to "Deputy GM" status. Matt Arnold was all for it, but Stearns said no.... On a serious note, being a great GM is similar to being a great chess player, you are always thinking 5 moves ahead. I would bet Stearns was planning on going after Cain 12-18 months ago.... They probably have much to discuss based on which free agent signs where and how the dominos fall
  20. If we signed Arrieta and traded for Archer, does anyone doubt we'd then be a potential World Series team? Arrieta Archer Nelson Anderson Chacin or Davies Is one heckuva rotation
  21. Cobb's stuff is electric when he is on... I just get concerned about his durability. But without access to any of these pitcher's medicals I should probably just trust that the Brewers front office is doing their due diligence on such matters. I have my preferences, but as long as we upgrade the top of the rotation with someone, whether that is Darvish, Arrieta or Cobb, I'll be happy. Or if we trade for Archer or Stroman etc... Lance Lynn could help the team, too, but isn't a TOR guy.... We just need more pitching!
  22. Thames, Aguillar, and Broxton are nothing special. Keeping Santana and having better depth off the bench is a good thing. Phillips as a 4th Outfielder is a good thing, too. Would Phillips start for the Astros, Yankees or Red Sox? If we are making a serious playoff run then we need to change the perspective here a little. Let Phillips force his way into more playing time with sensational play. These are good problems to have....
  23. Agree I would love to see the Cubs sign Darvish, and the Brewers get both Arrieta and the chip on Arrieta's shoulder.
  24. My sympathies! So back to the Brewers really needing to exceed the Cubs offer, not just match it....
  25. Good point re state taxes. Hadn't thought of that. Thank you
