  1. They might as well just bring Perez into camp. At least he's a plus defender wherever he plays.
  2. So...the difference in offense between Garcia and Cain (which may end up being zero or negative) less the difference in defense between Cain and Yelich in CF (huge), and Yelich and Garcia in RF (significant). That equals an emphatic No to parting with LoCain.
  3. Interesting MiLB response to some of the realignment drama: The first paragraph on the second page from this screenshot was an interesting tidbit to me: Has anyone found the e-mail that MLB shared, and if it's dated? The MLB-owned Carolina League teams are the Mudcats in Zebulon (Brewers), Fayetteville (Astros) which just moved from Buies Creek, NC in 2019, and Down East in Kinston, NC (Rangers), which was established in 2017 with a 12-year lease. Depending on the date of this memo, the Astros team would have had interest. The Rangers could have been looking for an out, given they've been last in the league in attendance. Not sure how serious they may have been, but it does seem reasonably likely the Brewers expressed interest in moving the Mudcats to Wilmington. Depending on the date, could have even been before the purchase. The Mudcats' facilities are very good though not new, and the market is ok a bit outside of rapidly-growing Raleigh, though being smack dab in Wilmington and playing when people flock to the beaches would probably be an upgrade. Another note - they reference MLB "shared" this internal memo to Carolina league teams with the media. The Astros were the initiator with the Brewers and Orioles support in getting the realignment plan initiated. So pretty easy to guess how MLB was able to obtain and leak this Carolina League internal memo.
  4. Worked out well the last time we signed the KBO MVP to a three year deal. I mean, if the market is such that the Giants are throwing out $9M for one year of a guy who was just DFA'd and non-tendered by two different teams, I'm down with committing that much for three years of someone who has at least as much of a chance of panning out.
  5. Seems early to be signing the one year deal. A fair price, maybe a little team friendly. If they get last year's injury-riddled player they overpaid by double. If they get the previous couple of years' player he's worth a lot more.
  6. His minor league numbers are nice. Guess I'll have to call him RonAAAAld to make it work. Unlike Perez, it doesn't look like his defense is anything special. Guess this is the type of signing you make when Erceg and his barely-.700 OPS in AAA is the what's next up out of the barren farm.
  7. Fantastic move to me. There isn't a free agent catcher available to sign who had a higher WAR last year other than Robinson Chirinos, who is 35. Three years that combined may barely cost more than one year of Grandal's deal, and by then you'd hope Feliciano and/or Fry are taking over. He's not great defensively and I don't like always trading away draft picks, but the it's an ideal fit and the cost was little.
  8. With no options, the "best case" is he gets hot in spring training and makes the roster, comes back to reality and loses us a couple of games in April, and is DFA'd in May.
  9. This should help the fan's experience.
  10. 35 homer Jesus was nice. Last year, even after the trade Jesus had no power. A turtle that gets on base at a respectable rate won't do it at 1B.
  11. One quibble. Urias is in a different stratosphere as a prospect than Dubon. This doesn't soften the blow. This is like being reborn. Feels like getting a mulligan on Arcia rather than Dubon. Pulled him out of the time machine as a top prospect with the chance to be really good. Hopefully a different outcome this time. Overall seems like high risk, high reward. I'll trust Stearns and Co. on it.
  12. Mathias is added to the 40. [sarcasm]Hey, Dubon's back![/sarcasm]
  13. I like all of it. Finally, something to get for Christmas.
  14. The Giants have hired Gabe Kapler as their manager. Why, I don't know.
  15. Will miss Thames. I guess they have a target list for 1B upgrades. A Braun-Thames platoon seemed to make sense, and $7.5M is not a price tag where you try to get him for less.
  16. Seems Colorado Springs would be a prime target to be dumped, considering the "paper roster" for stashing players was its primary use, there are already two rookie-league teams in Arizona that presumably would even need to be cut to one, and you have Rookie league players in the Pioneer League traveling long distances that make it further impractical. If MLB is driving this they'll protect the team-owned affiliates, so Carolina would be safest. The league is also travel-friendly. Interesting that pulling in the St. Paul Saints was mentioned - if the goal is to get clubs more affiliates in their backyards it's good for Appleton. Wonder if they'd want to push those teams to higher levels due to all the AAA shuttling.
  17. The Cards are trying very hard to make me pity them. It's not working.
  18. Also agree with all of this other than Claudio. Could see the argument if the pen ends up having Suter, Hader, and Pomeranz already, but he's cheap enough to carry or be an easy trade. Shaw is a challenging one to figure out. It's a killer if we throw that number out on a below replacement level player like 2019 Shaw, but it would be paying a third of the value that 2017-2018 Shaw brought. The expected price is pretty much a coin flip between those two outcomes. We'll also see where the SS talk from Stearns leads. Arcia isn't expensive, which should make a trade doable if they decide to move on.
  19. The 14 consecutive losing seasons and 25 consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs were very Sad Panda.
  20. Had to do a double take on the formatting of the name to get that it's truly called that. Yes, that's dumb. There's a hundred Milwaukee or Brewers references or puns that would work. Hell, make a Seattle Pilots reference.
  21. From this link: Looking at their website, Delaware North operates the 1919 Kitchen & Tap in Green Bay. I'd imagine it'll be similar to that.
  22. Couple of rough spots with the last few bullpen arms and bench infielders, exactly the places you'd want flexibility being exactly the players out of options. Probably the places to look for non-tenders and spring training/early season DFAs.
  23. I wouldn't mind being in the Braves situation either. All that talent under 25 and the farm is still loaded.
