  1. Great win. Old man who caught the Reynolds HR is my MVP of the game.
  2. Is there a baserunning coach that can get fired? This is embarrassing night after night.
  3. By all accounts, Johnny Davis is probably the fastest Brewer in years (ever?) I've read that he (allegedly) runs a 6.0/6.1 second 60-yard dash, while I've seen Gomez pegged at around 6.3 seconds. For the sake of comparison, when Jesse Owens set the world record in the 60-yard dash in 1935 it was 6.1 seconds... I would love to see Davis race Billy Hamilton. Obviously nobody knows these things for sure, but my pick for the top 3 would probably be Davis, Gomez, and Brandon Diaz.
  4. Can't embed it, but:
  5. Are they afraid of Kershaw or something? This is some early-2000s Brewers nonsense.
  6. Kershaw has been very beatable today. Shame the Brewers have waffled so far.

  8. Wasn't counting on a sweep, but I fully expect a Brewers win today. Also, here's to a Jimmy Nelson hit off of Kershaw.
  9. "Hanging in there"? The Lohse signing was nothing short of fantastic, and the Garza signing is showing a lot of promise as well. Yeah, Suppan and Looper were enormous duds (and Wolf became an enormous dud), but I think that's the nature of signing free agent pitchers. The Suppan deal is the only one that never made sense even from day one. Also have to give Melvin credit for scrap-heap finds like Chris Narveson.
  10. Well yeah, in 2014 we no longer have either so I would love to have Escobar, Odorizzi, Brantley, etc. just lying around. They were still both great trades though. Also worth mentioning that the Sabathia trade almost netted us Mike Trout via the compensation pick.
  11. It looks pretty atrocious to me: Yuniesky Betancourt (33) Billy Butler (29) – $12.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout Michael Cuddyer (36) Corey Hart (33) Adam LaRoche (35) – $15MM mutual option with a $2MM buyout Adam Lind (31) – $7.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout Mike Morse (33) Carlos Pena (37) Ty Wigginton (37) Kevin Youkilis (36) Assuming LaRoche stays with the Nationals, it's pretty much Cuddyer or bust. Maybe Morse if he costs nothing. Reynolds has exceeded expectations in 2014, but he's still splitting time with Overbay (horrendous), and he has a .317 wOBA this year. Parra has a career .313 wOBA and a track record of amazing defense.
  12. The rationale behind moving Braun is not that Braun is horrendous in RF or that Gerardo Parra is an MVP caliber player, it's that we have a gaping black hole at 1B and a serviceable everyday LF/RF sitting on the bench. Unless you want another year of Lyle Overbay.
  13. Use Prince Fielder as an example: Prince was a bad but not catastrophic defender at 1B. What do you suppose his defensive metrics would have been if he was playing 3B? I'm willing to bet far worse than even Braun. The positions are not equivalent and one is simply much easier than the other.
  14. Braun's inability to play 3B in 2007 has basically zero correlation to his ability to play 1B in 2014/2015. I understand that a random guy off the street can't just step in and play 1B, but I feel like some are going to the other extreme and acting like 1B is incredibly difficult. It's the easiest position in baseball and there's a reason so many aging players from the history of baseball ended up there. If you are a plus athlete and not a midget (Braun meets both criteria), you will be a competent 1B.
  15. Has it though? I don't think there's any evidence that it has. I mean, we have a rumored list of 90 more guys from the Biogenesis case alone. There's no way Biogenesis was the only place MLB players could get PEDs. If Braun knew that he could lose his contract maybe he never does the PEDS in the first place Yes, costing Braun hundreds of millions of dollars and possibly ending his career for the heinous crime of violating an arbitrarily drawn list of "banned" substances and for offending the sensibilities of armchair tough guys like Buster Olney would be great for the sport. Also, just wanted to pop in and note the irony that before every MLB.com highlight I watch there is a commercial of Carlos Beltran selling "five hour energy" stimulants.
  16. Wow, Wily Peralta alone at the top of MLB with 14 W! [sarcasm]If the Brewers make the playoffs that means auto-Cy Young, right?[/sarcasm]
  17. Estrada is broken this year, he should be the long man not the 8th inning guy. He (used) to be a competent starter, but I don't think he has the overpowering stuff to fill that role very well. It should be Jeffress and Duke, imo.
  18. I care, but I guess I'm just "sanctimonious". I promised myself I would try to stay out of these conversations, but I can't help myself with posts like this. This whole thought that you must be "holier-than-thou" if you care about PED usage. No, I just don't care to see the game I grew up watching and loving turn into a cartoonish video game version of itself. How does what Braun was doing turn it into a "cartoonish video game"? Too many people associate all PEDs (not just cosmetic steroids) with the Canseco/McGwire era where guys had no idea what they were doing and were abusing steroids to look like video game characters, which doesn't even help you hit the ball further. Players like Braun are taking PEDs (assuming he took them) to gain a slight advantage in training and in recovering from injuries faster so he can stay on the field. I understand there is a heated debate and that both sides of the argument have valid points, but let's be clear what we're debating here.
  19. Even before tonight, Kintzler had a 5.0 K/9 and a 4.73 FIP, which is good for -0.5 fWAR in 37.2 IP. I guess the shiny ERA means he's a high-leverage reliever though...?
  20. I thought Papelbon cleared waivers? I feel like the Brewers bullpen is not that big of a concern and is actually pretty decent. Kintzler is possibly the worst RP on the team though, I don't see why you use him in a close game...
  21. Sandoval's WAR this season is driven almost entirely by defensive metrics, but like I said, good luck if you want to pay a premium salary for a guy with weight issues and an extensive injury history being an elite defensive 3B over the life of a free agent deal. I just don't see how anyone considers him a premium player unless they still think he's the guy who will hit .330 with 25 HR like he was way back in 2009. Kind of like Cespedes, he's treated like an elite player simply because he's a fan favorite and does exciting things sometimes (like 3 HR in one game), but overall he's really not that amazing. From 2012-2014, Sandoval has a .333 wOBA versus Parra's .311 wOBA. But Parra is one of the best defenders in baseball.
  22. Theo is doing a great job, but I'm not ready to declare them contenders yet. Even if all of their big prospects pan out, they are too offense heavy. They have almost no pitching coming up, so they're going to have to rely on promising cast-offs like Turner, and that's a big gamble. I take it Theo's strategy is to stockpile players like Addison Russell who he can then flip for pitching when they need it, but again, a lot of things need to happen as planned to become a good team.
  23. Would be an interesting pick-up, because he can backup Segura when Jean is struggling (like this season...) and in 2015 you could try moving him to 2B to platoon with Gennett and start against LHP.
  24. Sandoval is one of the most overrated players in the game. He's a .330 wOBA hitter, and even though defensive metrics sometimes like him I just can't imagine a guy with that body type is a superb defender at 3B (or will continue to be over the next few years). Sandoval is still getting by on reputation from the hitter he was five years ago. The Brewers could get better overall production by moving Braun to 1B and tendering a contract to Parra to play RF.
