  1. Even assuming that Seattle/Texas want to pay to add another bat, the Brewers can easily outbid both of them simply by offering Morales multiple years. Fielder will be back in 2015, and although Hart is on a one-year deal the Mariners have too many options at 1B/DH when everybody is healthy. The Brewers need a 1B for multiple years. They should easily outbid anybody else unless somebody offers a massive one-year deal.
  2. I would much rather take a guy who has been a consensus first-round pick out of both high school and college and who is falling due to pre-draft inconsistency, than a guy who has risen dramatically due to pre-draft dominance. Seems like scouting directors should be basing this decision on talent and longterm track record more than a late hot streak.
  3. They're also really expensive to take out. It's not like paying for your car insurance. Yeah, it's a substantial percentage of the contract, so we could be talking millions per season. I don't know if it's outdated, but I remember an article from years ago discussing this. Some teams as a policy just never insure players (I think the Mariners were one), some insure all players, some have a mix. I was more referring to the fact that Fielder is making $25M for the next half-decade, was horrible this season, and is now coming off from some kind of weird surgery that has to do with his nerves and persistent weakness in his arms. Not a great position to be in for Texas. Would have been devastating for Milwaukee.
  4. This would be so great!!! Lots of credit to Melvin/Mark A for expanding their horizons in recent years (Aoki, Mallen/Pierre, almost Abreu...) despite being the smallest market in baseball.
  5. Wasn't that the buzz on Sonny Gray too, when the Brewers passed on him (among others...) in the Draft of Great Shame? Someone should do a study of draft-time "might become a reliever" versus career outcomes.
  6. Neither one is much of a prospect at 1B. The only reason Morris was considered a solid prospect (at least for the Brewers...) was his 2012 season, but that's longer and longer in the past. Not to be negative, but if you have a career low-.300s OBP in the minors (Morris, .321; Ramirez, .314) you have no business playing in the majors at 1B. David Denson looks much more promising to me. He's not hitting for power yet, but he's showing great OBP skills for his age. Power might come with time.
  7. Fielder is the perfect example of why mega-contracts are a bad idea for small markets. Imagine if we had signed him for $200M like some people wanted? Team would be wrecked for years to come.
  8. Morales would just be a typical melvin "we are in contention and he is a veteran " move. Overspending for more average, less power, and worse defense than morris could provide. I imagine mark/ doug giving morales whatever he wants. Not that I want it, just a feeling. I have very little faith that Morris could maintain a mid-.700s OPS in the major leagues, but I see zero reason why he shouldn't be called up right now in place of Overbay to see if he can. Give Morris some MLB experience and evaluate whether he is a feasible starter. If he's not, then sign Morales a month from now.
  9. Overbay and Bianchi are honestly indefensible. Bianchi now has 383 PA for the Brewers across three seasons, and a cumulative .238 wOBA... It's not a slump, he just cannot hit MLB pitching. I don't care if he's a good defender, there are better options out there. As for Overbay, he must be one heck of a clubhouse presence because his place on this team is baffling. Especially when Melvin keeps letting low-cost replacements float by: Francisco, ok, he was horrendous last year so I can see letting him go. But why not take a flier on Travis Ishikawa again if you want a defensive complement to Reynolds? Why not trade a non-prospect for Kyle Blanks? Melvin is coasting on the Brewers' early-season success, and not being nearly proactive enough in fixing the bench and figuring out a Plan B for LF until Davis starts looking competent. He is throwing the season away, to be quite honest.
  10. You do realize that there are ways to cost a team a win as a pitcher other than actually giving up the lead in a game, right? Who do you think Roenicke should have pitched last night instead of Wang? How many teams have used one position player to pitch this year, much less 2?! Tonight's game is turning into a "mop up" type game, so now what do they do? Wang threw a lot of pitches last night, so I'm guessing he will not be used, so they have to turn to using the "actual" pitchers with the threat of having another situation in the near future that Wang needs to be used in a close game situation because we have run out of arms? Can you see how Wang can cost the Brewers games without actually pitching? What ways are those? Because last I checked the games were still decided based on runs, the Braves scored 5 runs on non-Wang pitchers, and the Brewers only scored 4 (including getting to hit against not-Kimbrel). There is zero reason to use Wang in close games. Roenicke is an idiot for having used him last night, because now in an actual mop-up situation he won't be available most likely. We got through almost two months with an incredible record, a high number of 1-2 run games taxing the back of the bullpen, with the best record in baseball, and Wang was not an issue. Now he is a huge problem because our offense sucks??
  11. This would be a better argument if Lyle Overbay, Jeff Bianchi, etc. weren't on the team. You could cut Overbay, call up another RP in his place, and use Gallardo as a PH and the team would literally be better off. That would be a better argument if just about every team in MLB didn't have backup position players such as Overbay and Bianchi on the bench. Without looking, I'm pretty sure that there is no other MLB team that currently has a pitcher who has been on their active roster since the start of the season (without ever missing time because of an injury) that has only 7 IP with a 17+ ERA...oh and has only pitched as high as Rookie level ball prior to this season. You could have Overbay or Bianchi pitch in place of Wang and the the team would literally be better off. Just about every team in MLB has a 37-year-old, 1B-only backup with a .569 OPS? I know just about every team doesn't have a Bianchi, because he currently has the third worst wRC+ of any player in baseball with >50 PA. The fact remains that Wang has cost us zero games, and even last night (a loss which he did not cause) the issue was Roenicke's idiotic decision to pitch him there. He is a mop-up guy, there's nothing wrong with that. People are filling pages and pages of complaints about Wang when he is far from the issue with this team right now. The real problem is the useless bench and scuffling offense.
  12. This would be a better argument if Lyle Overbay, Jeff Bianchi, etc. weren't on the team. You could cut Overbay, call up another RP in his place, and use Gallardo as a PH and the team would literally be better off.
  13. To Melvin's credit, he did try to sign Jose Abreu for $60M.
  14. Wang has cost us exactly zero games. It was ludicrous to use him in a 1-run game in the first place though. There is still no reason to get rid of him if they think he's a legitimate prospect. Though a convenient DL stint would be nice.
  15. 1) Jimmy Nelson (if Tim Dillard is ineligible...) 2) Tyrone Taylor 3) Taylor Jungmann (people's unfair expectations of how fast he would move clouding his potential...) 4) Clint Coulter 5) Orlando Arcia 6) Devin Williams 7) Nick Delmonico 8) Jed Bradley 9) Mitch Haniger 10) Victor Roach (please start hitting...) 11) Franley Mallen 12) Hunter Morris (hard to be a 1B-only prospect...) 13) Ariel Pena 14) Nicholas Pierre 15) Brent Suter 16) Tucker Neuhaus 17) Tyler Cravy 18) David Goforth 19) Hobbs Johnson 20) Jorge Lopez
  16. Angels seem to be the most logical one out there that could drive up the price. A's have a need at DH but questionable means and can the Yankees be ruled out? C.J. Cron has been hitting well for the Angels and the A's just traded for Kyle Blanks who will be getting playing time at 1B/DH. Seems like the main competition will be between Milwaukee and Baltimore (if Melvin even wants Morales). Baltimore might be extra motivated to sign a DH if Matt Wieters gets TJ surgery and is out for the year. Maybe Texas could swoop in for an upgrade at DH?
  17. Why not just play everyone anywhere? It's all just catching and throwing! If Jose Oquendo could do it, anyone can! Basically any MLB-caliber 2B should be able to manage LF. I'm not sure what your point is... As for Scooter's offense, he's not an ideal corner-OF, but the problem is Weeks is hitting like crazy right now, and our everyday LF has a .244 OBP. It simply makes no sense to have one of Weeks/Scooter on the bench when it seems that Davis needs a platoon partner for the time being. Davis has a .210 OBP against RHP right now!!!
  18. Mentioned this in the gamethread for today, but if Rickie refuses to play LF while spotting the best offensive line on the team right now, why don't they just try Gennett in LF? He could play good defense there and Scooter/Khris both have pretty dramatic (and complementary) platoon splits this season.
  19. Second only to widespread steroid use IMO. You mean the time they secretly juiced the ball in the mid-90s and then blamed the huge power spikes on steroids despite the lack of any evidence that steroid-use correlates with hitting?
  20. So Rickie refuses to play 2B apparently -- but why don't they try Scooter in LF? Don't Scooter/Khris have complementary platoon splits?
  21. Is there anyone left who legitimately thinks the Brewers can compete with this offense? I know today is particularly bad with A-Ram/Gomez out, but the bench is still part of the offense. Melvin needs to make some substantial moves sooner rather than latter.
  22. If I wish hard enough, can the Brewers un-sign Matt Garza?
  23. He's an averagish 3B (maybe 2-3 WAR over a full season) with health issues. Great value for the Blue Jays from trading just Shaun Marcum, but I'm not missing Lawrie all that much. Plus when the trade happened wasn't there some buzz that the Brewers saw some character issues with him?
  24. Taylor/Nelson/Coulter would get us, like, Andre Ethier or somebody. Not Stanton. Not in a million years.
  25. I would never trade Braun, not even for pre-TJ Fernandez. Pitchers and unreliable and flame out all the time, whereas Braun is a HoF-caliber offensive performer signed (by today's standards) to a reasonable contract for the length of his career. I'm not saying he's the best player in baseball by any means, but I don't think there's anyone I would trade him for. Even Mike Trout you're only getting him for a few years, because he would never sign the extension Braun is on to stay in Milwaukee. (Maybe I would trade him if it was something ludicrous like Braun+ for Stanton/Fernandez as suggested above, but that kind of trade is just fanciful and would never happen).
