  1. How much value do you think Fiers has at this point? If the offer is Fiers for Dunn, the White Sox are the ones saying no, not the Brewers. Fiers should have a lot of value. He had three bad starts in the MLB and now he is valueless? He has had success against MLB hitting and is currently pitching like a machine at AAA: 5 GS, 5 W, 33.2 IP, 0.80 ERA, 0.653 WHIP, 12.6 K/9, 0.8 BB/9 He should be next in line to take a spot in the Brewers MLB rotation, and to me he's not that different than Marco Estrada. Only with more years of team control. Dunn is a semi-untradeable albatross.
  2. It's a 2 team race for now. Reds and Brewers? Cincinnati is only one game behind St. Louis and has a much better roster at this point. Comparable pitching, better offense going forward.
  3. We are 21-9 and Braun has either been injured or mediocre for most of the season. I know his overall line is pretty good, but most of that came in literally just two games. They should either try Weeks in RF or trade for somebody like Scott Van Slyke who could offer 1B insurance down the stretch.
  4. Davis was way better in the minors. And they were both non-prospects so I don't know if national prospect reputation really matters.
  5. College pitchers are boring. (Beyond top-top picks like Strasburg). The Brewers have not had a successful first-round college pitcher since the 1999 draft... Please take a high-upside high school player!!!
  6. Wainwright/Molina
  7. Davis won a lot of hearts by dramatically out-hitting Gindl at every level of the minor leagues and at every stage of his career. To my knowledge he has never shown dramatic platoon splits prior to this season, and this season involves a meaningless sample size (we're talking a handful of specific SP that are creating the difference), and yet he's a platoon player now? There's a reason the Brewers traded Aoki and handed Davis a full-time starting job. And there's a reason Gindl has consistently been passed over for MLB playing time, making this his fourth consecutive season at AAA.
  8. Khris Davis is a platoon player now? When did that happen?
  9. I'm not looking for a "lights out" last man in the bullpen. I'm looking for someone with an ERA below, say, 6.00. That's not a lot to ask. I would have no problem taking a chance on Wang if he could actually get some big league hitters out. But we've seen so far this season that he can't. And when you look at the historical odds he is facing (i.e., what other pitcher in baseball history has pitched effectively in the majors with only one season of Rookie ball under his belt), I think it is extremely doubtful that Wang will be anything but a dumpster fire when coming out of the bullpen this season. Does that disqualify Rob Wooten now too? 7.71 ERA right now over a slightly larger tiny sample size. Wang's had two rough outings in his first few appearances above Rookie ball, but looked fine in his other two appearance, and looked great all during Spring Training (not the same thing obviously, but he was getting MLB hitters out). Who's to say his two implosions were not just initial nerves? There are plenty of pitchers who went straight to the majors. I'm not saying Wang is a Catfish-Hunter-level talent, but all he needs to be is a mediocre-or-worse long reliever so we can get him into the system.
  10. I think sending Weeks to AAA would demolish his confidence even further. Really, the most sensible thing to me would be to give him some time at 3B/OF to increase his playing time. But even in the "white flag" games involving Herrera in RF and Reynolds at 3B they decided not start weeks, so if you're not going to do it then you're not going to do it ever. Not sure what their strategy is with Weeks right now. They might still be in the window of keeping him out of the lineup to 100% guarantee he doesn't hit 400 PA this season no matter what.
  11. I will inform the Angels that Mike Trout is not a good player because 24 other teams decided it was not worth spending a first round pick on him.
  12. A guy with enough talent and 0 days minor league experience will be more "qualified" than a guy with 10 years of minor league experience and mediocre talent. I'm not saying Wang is Stephen Strasburg, but the fact that he is still on the roster proves that the Brewers front office and Brewers talent evaluators think he is either valuable enough to keep on the roster and/or stash for the rest of the season. So really there is no arguing with the basic fact that all of us here on this board do not have the same level of expertise or access to dispute that judgment.
  13. That is preposterous. The level of irrational hatred for Weeks on this board is bizarre. (Also, since when is Gennett suddenly "one of our most durable players"???)
  14. Weeks first 10 games: .143/.143/.190/.333 Weeks last 9 games: .273/.429/.273/.701 Giving up on Weeks now would be silly. He will rebuild value if you just give him enough time. I think maybe Gindl could be expected to be a better hitter at this point, but Gindl is the one with less positional flexibility. Weeks is a 2B. If required he could likely play anywhere on the field except C/SS most likely.
  15. In extra innings, yeah. But I can't remember the last time I saw a position player pitch in the eighth. I agree with another poster in saying it is typically not extra innings. However, I was wrong about once or twice a month. It is usually about 5 times per year according to bref. I thought I remembered the Yankees or Red Sox using a position player earlier this year. Huh. Maybe it's more of an AL thing, because I honestly don't remember seeing it very often, at least for the Brewers.
  16. In extra innings, yeah. But I can't remember the last time I saw a position player pitch in the eighth.
  17. Innings aren't everything either. K-Rod is only #12 in total pitches, Will Smith is #26, Thornburg is #46, and Duke is #71. I also see no reason to think that K-Rod is incapable of throwing 96 innings. Relievers generally don't throw that many simply because they don't have an opportunity to. Last season Anthony Swarzak threw 96.0 IP for the Twins (all in relief) and was pretty good (2.91 ERA, 3.28 FIP). In 2011, Jonny Venters appeared in 85 G for the Braves (88.0 IP) and was lights-out: 1.84 ERA, 2.78 FIP. Obviously, we likely are not going to win >120 games, so that is likely not going to be an issue, but even if it was I don't see how it is a concern whatsoever. Besides, best to ride him while he's hot. If his arm falls off just use Henderson as the closer again (or Thornburg, or Smith, etc.)
  18. It's nearly May and he's still on the team, so the Brewers talent evaluators clearly think he has legitimate SP potential. It would be dumb if they gave up now because of some manufactured "roster crisis"
  19. Khris Davis also hit .297/.369/.549 vs RHP in a larger sample last season. We're still early enough in 2014 that those splits you provided might just be based on the specific identity of the handful of RHP vs. LHP that he's seen. What would hurt his confidence would be to start treating him like a platoon player when he's proven he at least has the ability to mash both LHP and RHP equally well. He's already starting to heat up. OPS is about 140 points higher in the second half of 2014 versus the first half of 2014 (so far).
  20. When did Fangraphs articles become so consistently bad/pointless? I feel like it's been a few years now. The bullpen for a team on pace to win 120 games, most of them by just 1-2 runs, is going to be historically valuable, and the Brewers bullpen probably won't end up doing that? Wow, thanks for the magical projections, Dave!
  21. Tyrone Taylor hit for the cycle tonight for Brevard County. Call him up!
  22. 100 OPS+ plus -40 UZR defender =/= average
  23. To be fair, this is the lineup that beat St. Louis last night, only with Overbay instead of Lucroy.
