  1. Because when someone says something that you don't like, you should definitely bum rush him. I'm not saying sports-fights are rational, but it's a (dumb) sort-of-tradition in the game. Maybe he was totally wrong, but Quentin seemed to think the HBP was intentional (and was subsequently goaded by Greinke). Assuming that was the case, and if Quentin had been the one to break his collarbone from the pitch, is Greinke still in the right?
  2. I like Greinke too, but let's not distort what happened. The pitch looked suspicious to me and Quentin only charged the mound after Greinke yelled something at him. Kemp was the one acting like a crazy person.
  3. I would just like to point out that Yuniesky Betancourt is the starting 1B. That is all.
  4. Never give a catcher a contract that big. What are these teams thinking...
  5. OPS underrates his OBP-skills. Career .330 wOBA (Barton) vs. .298 (Gonzalez), and the former has actually played 1B before (with very good defense)... All of these options are subpar, but Mike Carp is mediocre and Hunter Morris needs more time in the minors. This is a short-term stopgap, why trade players or screw up the potential 1B of the future.
  6. How is Daric Barton a trainwreck with a career .360 OBP (.393 a couple seasons ago) and elite defense. He doesn't hit home runs - so what, he's a different type of player. I don't think he's great but we only need a stopgap for a month or two until Hart comes back. Better than messing up Hunter Morris's development...
  7. Daric Barton is probably better than Mat Gamel, just to be honest. (But I agree, the only correct answer begins with a Rus- and ends with an -anyan)
  8. Still don't care even if he did take something illegal (I won't say "guilty" because that makes it sound like this is something that anybody should care about). People's irrational hatred of steroids is bizarre. Outside of a few minor stories did anyone care that Ray Lewis just won the Super Bowl after being linked to a banned substance? Not a bit. If it had been baseball they would have (perhaps literally) crucified him. Not quite sure why there is the difference other than the fact that the media has created an angry storm in the baseball world but not in other sports, and people just react to what the media drills into them. (And before anyone responds that they personally hate Ray Lewis too - fine, I believe you, but don't act like it's treated the same as if he had been a baseball player). *Edit* Also this entire "steroid clinic" scandal is incredibly suspicious. Players have tens of millions of dollars if not more on the line but they go to a guy who apparently is not remotely secretive, who writes detailed records of people he deals with (he's dealing directly with the players??? since when does that ever happen???), and according to earlier stories everybody who worked there knew what was going on? And then almost all of the names written down were conveniently players who had already been in the media for steroid allegations? Yeah right. If players of Braun's caliber and fame are taking illegal substances, they are going to be doing it a heck of a lot more carefully than this.
  9. Pitching doesn't look amazing, but is it just me or is this the best U.S. starting lineup yet? I always feel like the U.S. doesn't commit all of its best players because it's afraid it might lose if it did.
  10. Jed Bradley jettisoned into outer space after one mediocre but not horrendous year (107 IP)??? I do question why Baseball America is taken so seriously if it's true that Tom Haudicourt had substantial control over this list.
  11. Well it's not a great study you can look at all the players named in the Mitchell Report and see that most of them stayed pretty crappy. There are definitely some players who took steroids and it correlated with their career years, but correlation does not imply causation. I can see steroids having some minimal impact, I just think it is totally overblown and unproven. Even adding 15-20 HR is a huge effect unsupported by any credible evidence. I also think there was just something going on in the league during the years that home runs peaked (whether expansion, or pitching quality, or a juiced ball, whatever). For example, who was third in MLB in 1998 behind McGwire and Sosa? Ken Griffey Jr. with a career-best 56 HR. I have never seen anyone accuse Griffey of taking steroids, and he had a major power spike in the same years.
  12. Those are the type of magical effects that I am talking about. What is the mechanism for how steroids supposedly improve eyesight? Is there any actual evidence (where is this reported)? It is all hearsay based on two things: (1) the media's relentless campaign against the Evils of Steroids and Steroid-Users, (2) the initial assumption that a guy with big comic-book muscles is going to hit more HR. The latter point is NOT TRUE. That is not how the art/science of baseball works.
  13. Players will swear that corked bats help too, but science says otherwise. Players took "greenies" for decades but I'm not sure they actually affected performance to any appreciable degree. The placebo effect/confirmation bias can be pretty powerful. I would be interested in any scientific or otherwise credible studies saying that steroids do what you say they do, because the claim that they increase bat speed sounds dubious to me. And the claim that they increase power seems entirely based on the mistaken notion that having big arms = hitting the baseball further, which I would say has been refuted convincingly elsewhere.
  14. Barry Bonds would disagree with you, he became jealous of Sosa and McGwire and wanted to show everyone how great the best player on the planet would be on steroids and it turned out to be better than Sosa and Mcgwire. There is very little evidence that steroids give you a significant advantage. The magical effects of steroids have turned into a giant myth. To explain Barry Bonds's stats it is just as credible to think that at the tail end of his career his unparalleled batting eye just made him a more effective/consistent power hitter. His BB% and AVG also spiked in the same years. Is that because of steroids? Or was he just hitting more HR because he was seeing the ball so amazingly well? If you only swing at fat pitches you are going to hit a lot of HR. Let's not forget that he hit 46 HR in 1993 as a guy with the physique of Craig Counsell.
  15. So we are just conceding that getting a Hall of Fame plaque is entirely dependent on who baseball writers* (*nevermind the fact that a significant portion of the people voting do not even cover baseball, or are senile "honorary" members) personally like, and not merit? To me that is dumb. As fans we should not tolerate a minority of delusional writer dragging down the entire sport by turning the alleged "Hall of Fame" into a Hall of Arbitrary Popularity. They need to make the Hall of Fame either based on some objective measure of merit, or try to figure out some way to leave it to the fans. The writers have lost the privilege of controlling access. To say that Barry Bonds should not be in the Hall of Fame because he took steroids at the tail end of his career (despite having an entire Hall of Fame worthy career before that) is laughable when one considers not only all of the vicious racists enshrined in the Hall, but the fact that the careers of half the players in the Hall have far more tainted numbers due to the fact that they played in a segregated league.
  16. The Hall of Fame has become beyond irrelevant. Not only does BARRY BONDS not make it into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot, but he gets fewer votes than another known steroid user (Clemens)? What is the justification for that other than the baseball media are a bunch of neanderthals who got their feelings hurt because Barry Bonds wasn't nice to them? As the strong campaign for Jack Morris shows, this no longer has anything to do with merit and is just a forum for baseball writers to vote for their friends and people they are friendly with. A complete joke.
  17. Lucroy and Braun should be the only two untouchables in the system. I think Lucroy is one of the most underrated players in the league; his explosion last season might be unsustainable but he really looks like he could be an elite offensive catcher, and his defense is really impressive. Particularly in areas like pitch framing which advanced metrics are just starting to reach.
  18. Given that the 2013 rotation is currently a giant slot machine, parting ways with an established back-end starter is the last thing they should do. If we're shooting the moon on reliability/durability, at the very least we need lots of depth.
  19. Will Gorzelanny start the season in the rotation if Narveson isn't ready? Have to imagine they want at east one LHSP.
  20. He has a career .296 wOBA, which is pretty bad for a 1B/OF. Granted it's still a small sample, but he has had brief chances across four consecutive seasons and just has never looked that good, imo, not even in small bursts. Yeah his minor league numbers are solid, but that doesn't always translate. In contrast, for example, Ishikawa has a career .320 wOBA and is a plus defender at 1B.
  21. I highly doubt he gets anything good in return, but they should probably just trade him at this point. He's always had a reputation as being a horrible defender, so I don't see how he's going to be useful as a supersub, and he just doesn't seem to be a great hitter at the MLB level to justify a full-time bench role. If they literally can't get anything in return, then obviously might as well keep him in the system, but I would consider trading him for an upside guy at A+ or something.
  22. Nice signing. Solid minor league numbers and he was actually ranked as a top 10 prospect for the Tigers by Fangraphs a few years ago: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/detroit-tigers-top-10-prospects/ In NPB (2011-12): 187.2 IP, 3.31 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.1 K/9, 2.6 BB/9
