Barring a major upgrade like Story or Donaldson, I'm starting to think it might make most sense to prioritize bullpen help. If we're aiming for the playoffs, it would be nice to have a #3 behind Hader and Williams other than Boxberger.
Happy for the win but that was the most awkward end to a game that I can recall Agreed, deserves credit for not just trampling and potentially injuring Hader.
I'm a big fan of Adames and that trade, but we did not give up very much for him (miraculously) so I doubt he is a barrier to a Story trade that the team would otherwise make. Agreed that Story is a better defender, so it would make sense for Adames to be the one displaced. It actually looks great on paper going with SS Story and 3B Adames/Urias. Career splits: Adames vs RHP, .338 wOBA, 115 wRC+ Urias vs LHP, .358 wOBA, 125 wRC+ Even better if you assume Adames slots in as a firmly above-average defensive 3B.
Yes and no. Just looking at the data his average spin rate today was below his season average, but spin rate is variable and it was not even his lowest spin rate game of the season for most of his pitches. (If the implication is that he has suddenly stopping using a foreign substance due to some crackdown.)
Coming into today's game, Vogelbach is up to a .329 wOBA/108 wRC+ on the season, largely dragged down by a terrible start. That's not great for a 1B but are some of these trade options really any better?
I was going to make a post askingnwhy a team with one of the most elite defensive CFs in baseball would trade for a guy whose primary value add is CF defense, but then I realized that's exactly what we did when we signed JBJ I would happily take on Donaldson's contract. I think he's become deeply underrated for some reason. People act like he is fragile and perennially injured, but he has five seasons with close to 700 PA, including as recently as 2019.
I'm not sure it is just pitchers figuring him out. He is visibly a different (and much worse) hitter at the plate. In some ways that is worse, of course, but I guess in some ways it is also better than him being the same as he's always been and just getting beat.
Hader was also used to face Tatis, Hosmer, and Myers. I think it was perfectly reasonable to use him there (rather than save him to face Caratini, Kim, and the pitcher's spot). The Padres had the luxury of saving their best RP because our entire lineup is terrible.
Well I think this is clearly wrong. He's 24 and if you even our small samples in either direction by just looking at his overall career stats, he has 689 PA hitting .250/.327/.472 with a 108 wRC+ His approach right now is definitely not cutting it though.
Hiura is one of my favorite players so I've hesitated to be too negative on him, but I think he needs to stay down in AAA for an extended period of time until he fixes his plate discipline. I'm not knowledgable enough to pinpoint what changed in his approach, but if you just look as his career minors/majors stats it seems clear that at a certain point he decided he could be successful by just swinging hard at everything. When he was first coming up in the minors his K% was not this bad. I know it's difficult to keep him down when he can probably put up decent stats despite not fixing the flaws, while our MLB roster is terrible, but it's in the long-term interests of everyone.
Re: bunting - what is sad though, is that you could actually make the case that Manny Pina is the best hitter on the team right now (or maybe second behind Narvaez)
The sign stealing thing is really overblown, even for the Astros. Their trash can scheme did not give them that much of an advantage. Not surprisingly they currently have the best offense in MLB once again (because they have a bunch of really good hitters).
In my original post I didn't mean to suggest that WAR should be compared 1:1, since I agree that it does not fully take into account situational leverage. But if you had told me during the offseason that we were trading Hader and the centerpiece of the return was Willy Adames, I honestly would not have been surprised (whether or not I thought it was a good deal).
