  1. My guess as of right now, based on players who are out of options: Starting lineup: Pina Aguilar Perez Shaw Arcia Braun Cain Yelich Bench: Kratz Saladino Thames Broxton Santana Pitching staff: Nelson Chacin Anderson Davies Woodruff J. Guerra Albers Houser Barnes Burnes Hader Knebel Jeffress Not counting signing bonuses or deferred salary, that brings the current payroll right around $93.2 million, not the $100+ million figure I've seen reported elsewhere. Plenty of room to add a free agent or two. Freddy is in the minors to stay stretched out, and Burnes may be as well (probably replaced in the bullpen by Taylor Williams or, if he looks good in Spring Training, newly signed Deolis Guerra)
  2. Murphy has historically been a below average defender, not a "terrible" defender. So annoying when some claim just becomes received wisdom even though it's totally divorced from facts/statistics. Sorry to bring fantasy baseball into this ( ), but I followed Murphy's season very closely last year because I whiffed on picking him early. The reason he was so bad both defensively, and below his standards offensively, was because of his offseason knee surgery. He was initially supposed to be ready around Opening Day but it just kept getting pushed back further and further and he wasn't even doing on-field drills. Then eventually the Nationals ran out of patience months into the season and just rushed him back, even though he could not run at full speed or move side-to-side comfortably, and even though his in-game preparation was perfunctory. Obviously that's a problem at 2B. Major surgery like that is still a big red flag, so it's not like Murphy is going to get the contract he would have after 2016-2017, but the upside there is tremendous. If he signs on a 2-year deal we would be very lucky. He can definitely play 1B and I see no reason he can't be a super utility get in a corner OF too. He was a speedy player prior to his injury. Everything depends on whether he's healthy, of course.
  3. I'd love to have him, but only if he's healthy. Hard to know whether he is or not but the Blue Jays eating $38 million is not a good sign. An "aging disappointment"? Yeah we really swung and missed on that pick...
  4. Worse than the Brewers OF on days that Keon gets a start alongside Cain.
  5. Absolutely zero? I'm not sure any team is going to sign him as their everyday SS. He'd have as good a chance here to rebuild some value as anywhere else. It sort of makes sense because on a one year contract to show he's healthy he'd be a good bridge to Hiura at 2B.
  6. Bauer was significantly better than Paxton last season and doesn't have the same injury/durability red flags. He's much more valuable in my opinion.
  7. He was bad last season because he was coming off surgery and seemingly couldn't even run at full speed when he first started back in the majors. After the trade to the Cubs he had a neutral dWAR for what it's worth. I have never heard of him having a reputation as "terrible" on defense pre-2018. (Granted he's a bat-first player obviously)
  8. New rumors that we are in on Daniel Murphy. Obviously the best 2B available if he is fully healthy again, but how many years do you give him? Might actually make sense to sign him with the plan of moving him to 1B once he gets a little older and Hiura is ready.
  9. Still don't trust Scooter enough to meet their likely asking price. There's a reason we let him go in the first place even after having shown flashes of being good.
  10. Hiura +++ for three years of Kluber is obviously more than fair, I'm just not confident in our immediate win-now chances in 2019 to go out on a limb like that. Counting on a pitcher to remain elite through age 35 is always a huge risk. Keeping our last bluechip positional prospect sets us up for sustained success as a small payroll team.
  11. I’d hardly call his 2/3rds of a season in the bullpen a waste. He was much needed and a valuable part of how and what they accomplished. Not my point... He's already had success in the majors in 2018, so going into 2019 he needs to be in the rotation from the start.
  12. Ryan Braun is still a useful player. I can possibly see trying to move him in a pure salary dump, but why would we just swap bad contracts?
  13. (And if the front office thinks Burnes is too valuable to trade like many on here, then he'd better be in the rotation this season. Stop wasting his limited team control in the bullpen.)
  14. I'm not a huge fan of Bauer and have long been blocked by him on Twitter but all the same he would be a huge addition to the team. Burnes/Santana seems totally fair to me. Throwing in Ray seems unnecessary. The only reason I question our interest is that Bauer would have seemed like an ideal Stearns target before 2018. I think Stearns would prefer to target already valuable players who are about to breakout even further, like Yelich, rather than a guy coming off Cy Young type season.
  15. [sarcasm]"Next"? This obviously means Kratz is moving to 2B.[/sarcasm]
  16. Wow, Carrasco should fire his agent!
  17. Gordon is the prototypical player who relies 100% on his speed and is now entering his 30s and quickly falling off a cliff.
  18. If the Brewers are giving up Woodruff ++, they could probably "spend" it on something more needed than a 1B upgrade. Unless they expect Aguilar to really fall off a cliff.
  19. Good move for a team that can afford it, since last season they bizarrely had starting pitching issues despite having the best pitcher in baseball and Stephen Strasburg. The NL East is going to be dangerous.
  20. Let me know if you change your mind about the mortgage!
  21. I think the salary would definitely have to be offset somehow, either by trading out excess baggage (like Anderson) and/or filling another hole cheap (e.g. Gonzales). All depends on whether they think Seager's 2018 was a fluke (even then he wasn't exactly post-trade Schoop bad)
  22. If the Phillies are still in on Machado, does that make one of Cesar Hernandez or Maikel Franco available? I gladly would take a flier on either one.
  23. Seager is, like, twice as good as Moustakas assuming last season was a down year... Seager is extremely good. Even at Seager's absolute worse they were basically comparable players
  24. It's a great trade for the Mets, sadly, because they are an organization that can absorb salary even if Cano falls off a cliff. A team like the Brewers never could have made this trade.
  25. According to MLBTR: Seager is owed $19.5 million in 2019, $19.5 million in 2020, $18.5 million in 2021, and has a $15 million team option for 2020. He's an excellent defender at 3B and prior to an offensive slump in 2019 has been an All Star caliber starter for the last seven years, topping 5 fWAR twice. In terms of interesting assets, Seattle doesn't have much left other than Jean Segura (who would probably be too expensive to package on top of Seager), and Mitch Haniger (who we probably wouldn't target as yet another corner OF). They also have Marco Gonzales, however, who is a 26-year-old LHP SP that was quietly worth 3.6 fWAR last season and is under cheap team control for multiple seasons. What about this scenario? Seattle gets SP Chase Anderson Milwaukee gets 3B Kyle Seager SP Marco Gonzales That would add roughly $13 million to the books for 2020, but would kill two birds with one stone in terms of upgrading both 2B/3B (with Shaw moving to 2B everyday) and the starting rotation. Milwaukee could consider throwing in Thames as well if they view dumping his salary as more valuable than keeping him as a bench bat.
