  1. This is simply not true. Braun has had health issues, but when he's played he's remained a 30 HR, above-average offensive threat from a corner OF. But your reference to Braun cursing us with his "cheating" shows you have separate reasons for disliking him.
  2. Don't forget that the whole reason the front office added two expensive OF in the first place was presumably because they didn't trust Santana's success to continue once his flaws were exposed to MLB pitching. They were arguably proven correct in 2018.
  3. It will be easier to keep him going into 2020 because Thames will (likely) be a free agent. It's easier to keep both Gamel and Broxton on the bench when another bench spot isn't being taken up by a 1B/OF. Of course, depending on the seasons Gamel and Broxton have the calculus here could be entirely different (for better or for worse) I think people are underestimating the value of having a bench bat who can give you a 100 wRC+ with no platoon split.
  4. Gamel is a legit major league asset even if he's not a star. Calling four years of him "basically nothing" is a little unrealistic The downside to the trade is that Santana still has the upside to be an All Star player like he was in 2017, but the problem for us is that we are not a rebuilding team like Seattle and do not have the luxury of gambling on upside with a crowded OF.
  5. (For the record, Gamel is the same age and outhit Santana last year both at MLB and AAA)
  6. Santana was mediocre on offense last year, should probably be a DH-only, and basically had to be traded (either him or Broxton) so all things considered I have no problem with the return. I think our last "underwhelming" return from Seattle netted us Freddy Peralta.
  7. Gamel is a better defender but has less offensive upside. More important is if he has options left.
  8. Hopefully somebody useful, though I'm bracing for a boring return
  9. How exactly does this make the Reds substantially better? Puig couldn't keep a starting job in LA and Alex Wood is 150 IP of Good Zach Davies.
  10. 2020 free agents (with projected 2019 wRC+ and 2019 salary) Starlin Castro (MIA), 96 wRC+, $11M + $1M buyout Scooter Gennett (CIN), 96 wRC+, $10.7M Jedd Gyorko (STL), 103 wRC+, $13M + $1M buyout Brock Holt (BOS), 93 wRC+, $3.4M Howie Kendrick (WAS), 101 wRC+, $3.5M Jason Kipnis (CLE), 94 wRC+, $14.5M + $2.5M buyout Eduardo Nunez (BOS), 96 wRC+, $5M Ben Zobrist (CHC), 107 wRC+, $12M Chris Owings and Jonathan Schoop are also on one-year deals that they just signed this offseason. Factoring in cost none of those options exit me much more than a Spangenberg/Perez platoon. If we're willing to pay >$10M we could probably just sign Dozier on a one year rebound contract.
  11. Or Tulowitzki! Great trade from our perspective
  12. Or a team who is a legitimate World Series contender. A's and Giants don't fit that description, but I know another team who was one game away from the World Series and plays in a mostly weatherproof stadium... I don't think the Brewers are a more obvious playoff contender than the A's. Sadly the media is going to be slotting us in as fourth in the NL Central again going into 2019.
  13. Conspiracy theory: Spangenberg is a good fit as utility guy if we end up signing LeMahieu, who would be the normal starter at 2B but does hit much worse against RHP.
  14. Greg Holland 2.0
  15. If properly platooned and they both have good seasons, I think they're probably like a 2.0-2.5 WAR second base option.
  16. Career splits Hernan Perez v. LHP: .310 wOBA, 89 wRC+ Corey Spangenberg v. RHP: .326 wOBA, 106 wRC+ 2018 splits Hernan Perez v. LHP: .329 wOBA, 105 wRC+ Corey Spangenberg v. RHP: .319 wOBA, 101 wRC+
  17. Deal seems fair to me, but I'd rather go 4/$48 million or something like that for Grandal.
  18. Makes sense, I didn't realize he was barred from earning more. Have to think the Brewers would be strong contenders then if they really want him. Back in the NL, World Series contender last year, reigning NL MVP, wide open starting job at 2B and a starter at SS who got demoted for part of last season.
  19. Is this correct? "considering every team will likely be offering the same thing in terms of a contract" Can't see why that would be the case unless there's some rule prohibiting teams from giving a released player more than the league minimum.
  20. I think the sample is small enough that UZR is effectively meaningless. I don't remember him looking horrible the limited time we saw him over there. He stopped playing 1B because Aguilar became an everyday player and Santana got demoted, but now we're back to the original problem of having too many OF. I can't imagine they are going to keep all three of Thames/Santana/Broxton on the bench, and yet Santana and Broxton are out of options.
  21. If we trust Thames to go back to mashing RHP then it actually makes much more sense to sell high on Aguilar to add a major league piece (2B or SP) and then you can platoon Thames/Braun with Braun getting days in the OF along with Santana. Braun vs. LHP + (Good) Thames vs. RHP is an excellent 1B.
  22. I don't really see a Harvey breakout happening, but for an organization like the Angels an $11 million contract is not that big of a deal.
  23. There had to have been something wrong with Thames at the end of 2018. He's a much better hitter against RHP than his end of year numbers show (which even then were not that bad). Might as well hold on to him if trade partners are going to act like he has negative value.
  24. My guess is that they wanted him as a multi-inning LH RP rather than a SP. His stuff plays up way better out of the bullpen.
  25. We have payroll to make a run at Grandal. It's not clear to me that Realmuto is even better than Grandal. I hope they at least go after the guy who doesn't cost our top 1-3 prospects.
