  1. Scooter was a "mistake" in hindsight because he has become a significantly better player, but the Khris Davis trade had more to do with how the market values him. Davis has been essentially the same hitter throughout his MLB career.
  2. The Shaw trade is hard to beat, considering Shaw has turned himself into a player just as good as Christian Yelich (which is very good!), and Thornburg is just a RP even if he had not been injured the last two years. Also, I love Brinson and will always want him to succeed, but in case anyone has missed his stats this year: 212 PA, .161/.209/.281 with good but note elite defense. He's been brutal and he's not getting any younger (in fact he's only a couple years younger than Yelich)
  3. Wow, that's a pretty good high school coach! I think the baseball coach for my high school was the social studies teacher.
  4. Doesn't seem like a productive discussion to start arguing about an arbitrary hierarchy of crimes, including adult millionaire K-Rod physical assaulting the mother of his child and getting away with it without even facing public backlash. It's interesting (and good) how quickly MLB has changed with players like Osuna and Sano getting suspend this year, because MLB certainly did not care whatsoever even just a couple years ago. Aroldis Chapman physically assaulted and fired a gun while threatening his girlfriend, was suspended briefly, and then got a $90 million contract from the biggest media market in sports.
  5. I'm not even sure why a juvenile's criminal record is public knowledge to be tabloid fodder for the sports media, but in any event this thread is a great example of why Heimlich is not worth the hassle for the 5% chance he ever becomes a productive major leaguer. The fact is, even valued at millions of dollars, these players are fairly interchangeable at this point in their careers.
  6. HS RHP Luis Gonzalez next (Since this isn't listed on MLB.com, it appears PJ Education School is in Puerto Rico)
  7. Interesting that they announced him as a catcher, looks like he played all over the infield in college.
  8. Rasmussen is a great upside pick. Does two TJ in his past really mean he "projects" for the bullpen? Take your time with him and I'm aware of no TJ statistics indicating he can't handle a starter workload down the line. I'm guessing the Brewers think he can start.
  9. Also HS RHP Landon Marceaux, assuming no signability issues
  10. I like the sound of HS C Kameron Guangorena if he's still there when we pick.
  11. There goes Siani to the Reds, let's hope he doesn't sign.
  12. Keith, I think the key is that teams like the Brewers need to try to develop TOR pitchers. That's not the same as formulaically drafting them in the first two rounds if a position player you like better is sitting on your draft board. Plenty of high-upside arms will be available today, and down the line the key is to trade for the future Bumgarners before they are Cy Young mainstays, when they have already proven themselves as established prospects but can be had in trades (hopefully one day we trade All Star SS Orlando Arcia because he's in his walk year and Turang is dominating AAA).
  13. I think empirically, the top pitchers are not necessarily picked high in the draft. That's because pitching prospects are so variable and difficult to predict. If you have a guy who is a top-10 pick, sure, but that's not where we're picking this season. It seems perfectly reasonable (assuming this is what the front office is doing) to prefer positional prospects in this range who can be traded later as needed. I guarantee you they are going to load up on some starting pitchers tomorrow who they think/hope/pray could become the next deGrom or Kluber. And they could be right about one of them!
  14. Top 20 pitchers in the majors this season by fWAR: Verlander: trade Scherzer: free agent deGrom: 9th round draft pick Severino: international amateur Cole: trade Nola: 1st round, top-10 draft pick Bauer: trade Sale: trade Kluber: 4th round draft pick Paxton: 4th round draft pick Syndergaard: trade Snell: 1st round draft pick Mengden: 4th round draft pick Porcello: trade Pivetta: 4th round draft pick Gray: 1st round, top-10 draft pick Gonzalez: trade Corbin: trade Foltynewicz: trade Happ: trade Only one of them was acquired by a first day draft pick outside of the top 10.
  15. Keep in mind that we're in the range where this guy could legitimately be at the top of the front office's draft board, and/or could be signed underslot to help bring in talent later.
  16. Hawaiian prospects are the new market inefficiency!
  17. Gray is also the first Brewers draft pick to have been born in the year 2000. Yikes!
  18. Singer and Kowar going to the same team, that's cool.
  19. I did the Reddit Live Mock Draft on Sunday picking for the Brewers and I ended up with Brice Turang, Tristan Beck, and Braxton Ashcraft in the first three picks (LINK to final mock draft). I don’t actually think they could sign those three guys, but that would be an amazing night if they could. I'd take 2 out of 3 and an underslot guy! After listening to the Fangraphs draft podcast, I like Daniel Lynch out of Virginia too. Seems like he has some untapped potential if he can get away from a tense college situation.
  20. I would love for Tristan Beck to fall to our next pick.
  21. Internet prospect evaluators acting like Beer was a joke were so full of it. Clearly MLB teams (and a very well run team at that) trust the bat. I'm pouring one out to what could have been, Seth...
