  1. I'm not a fan of Ramos as a target, because his price is going to be jacked up the league-wide need for catching help (the Nationals and Astros in particular come to mind). Pina works well with the pitching staff and he has a bit of offensive upside if his BABIP normalizes. I would rather target a rental position player where we can get better value, such as 2B/SS.
  2. McHugh is having an excellent season out of the bullpen, and he has always been solid as a starter including last year. Meanwhile, the Astros have the best rotation 1-5 in baseball, and their weakest position is 1B/DH. Gonzalez and Gurriel have been awful. Would you trade 1B/DH Eric Thames for two years of SP Collin McHugh?
  3. On the other hand, that mock has Kelenic almost falling to us, which would be fun though seemingly very unlikely.
  4. Yes, but he's a marginal upgrade. Perez has a career .270/.301/.444 batting line, that's good not great even considering his plus defense. I think this is one of those scenarios where a player is being massively overrated because (1) he is popular with fans in KC, and (2) he is a very good fantasy catcher because of his HR/AVG Realmuto is a significantly better real world catcher, and even then I'm not giving up Hiura.
  5. Why in the world would we trade Hiura for Perez? He may be popular in Kansas City but in terms of talent Salvador Perez is an average player, nothing more nothing less. A good defensive catcher who shouldn't be counted on to hit much better than, say, a healthy Stephen Vogt.
  6. Whit Merrifield would be a big upgrade because you can slot him in as the everyday 2B, and then move Villar into a super utility role so we no longer need one or both of Sogard and Perez
  7. Not to mention our 27-year-old 2016 starting SS is still on the team...
  8. Should Nate Orf just retire at this point? He's played almost half his AAA games this season at SS, so clearly he can be a backup to Saladino, and meanwhile we are wasting not one but two utility spots with offensive liabilities in Sogard and Hernan Perez
  9. I have no clue why they don't give Bethancourt a shot or just wait for Nottingham to be healthy, but in terms of Kratz vs. Bandy, they are both horrible hitters but at least Kratz offers you some HR pop off the bench.
  10. I want Seth Beer! Enough with the five-tool centerfielders who immediately struggle in pro ball. Put Beer at 1B and let him hit. I'm no scout, but anecdotally a guy who can put up monster numbers over three years in the ACC with a nearly 2-to-1 career BB-K is a guy to bet on. Hiura batting third, Beer batting fourth for years to come
  11. Well he's not going to be a 4.00 ERA pitcher going foreword, especially not moving to the NL. But even if he was, consider how much Archer is locked in for and then consider how much Lance Lynn is asking for in large part due to his durability. I don't know what these circular discussions add though. Archer is objectively a great pitcher, anyone who disagrees is basing it on something other than statistics, scouting reports, or any objective evidence.
  12. Archer has one of the best sliders in baseball and a fastball and change-up that are roughly league average. That's not a "two pitch pitcher," there are only a handful of pitchers in baseball who have multiple plus plus pitches (Kershaw, Scherzer, etc.) His 45.7% career GB rate is above average, and he's only had an elevated Hard contact % for one season (2017) which suggests it had more to do with his unlucky BABIP than some kind of otherwise undetectable deterioration in skills. Over 967 IP in his career, he has a 3.63 ERA versus 3.46 FIP, and most of that difference came in a single season (2017) when he had a BABIP .30 points higher than his career line. I would have more sympathy for the anti-Archer people if he was coming back from a major injury or there was some other reason to think he just stopped being the pitcher he's been his entire career, rather than just having a single unlucky season. (And by the way, he's one of the few guys left in baseball who you can pencil in for giving you 200+ IP. He would have tremendous value even if he wasn't a top of the rotation arm)
  13. I would argue that Cobb's pre TJ surgery seasons were better than Archer's...and let's please not go down the road of thinking a higher K rate pitcher is better than a lower K rate pitcher. Greg Maddux had a career 6.1 K/9. There's a reason Greg Maddux is arguably the most unique pitcher in baseball history... I would be worried about Maddux too though if his K/9 dropped by more than 2.0 after a major arm injury and his advanced peripherals tanked.
  14. Minor correction: Hiura and his eventual .400 OBP is going to be batting leadoff from his rookie season
  15. Villar and Drury have similar projections for 2018. The added downside to adding Drury is that we lose the opportunity cost of seeing if Villar can become an All Star player again (like happened to Segura)
  16. Cobb is older and worse. Dude had a 6.4 K/9 last year! (Back when he was good it was 8.0-8.4) I would actually much rather the front office overpay in prospects than overpay in dollars. Contractual dead weight harms us a lot more than losing non-superstar prospects.
  17. Either that or Tampa Bay just really likes Jake Bauers and is going to go with Span-Kiermaier-Bauers all season, with Mallex Smith as the fourth OF.
  18. I think he's being underrated. He looked good at points in the season (including the opening months) in a way that is different from just an AAAA guy having a hot streak. I think he is fully capable of mashing against MLB pitching, and whatever was dragging him down for most of the middle of the season (whether mental or physical) is the aberration or the thing that can be adjusted against. He's not Barry Bonds as he temporarily looked like, but I think he could improve upon the overall season line he had last year. I'm much more worried about Jesus Aguilar being a flash in the pan. It would help to know what the playing time situation is even going to be, is Braun really going to split time at 1B? (He should basically be the full-time 1B with Thames as a bench bat is we're keeping Santana. Why sit any of Yelich-Cain-Santana-Braun?)
  19. Are Tampa Bay really going to roll with Mallex Smith as their starting RF? (Possibly in combination with rookie Jake Bauers).
  20. I don't have the link in front of me but I thought it was basically a 3/$21M deal which San Francisco blatantly engineered to evade the luxury tax rules.
  21. Tim Dillard is the only "funny" athlete who is actually good. Looking forward to his eventual broadcasting career.
  22. Hope the Commissioner's office voids the contract for cheating the luxury tax.
  23. Wonder if the market for Santana picks up now.
  24. Probably says a lot about their evaluation of whether he will bounce back.
