  1. To those that responded . . . . I wholeheartedly agree that the dad was totally irresponsible and the little girl was not at fault. Many of us (most?) felt TERRIBLE for her. I believe that there was talk at one point that the school board would make an exception for her to return to school but it was decided not to pursue it because "once you make one exception, then others will be looking for exceptions, too." Or at least that's what I was told. I remember that we had a very lively discussion about it at our staff meeting later that week. There were many staff members that were incredulous that the whole event happened in the first place. The gun literally sat in her backpack all day long and wasn't discovered until the end of the day when she had to put some papers/homework/whatever in her backpack before dismissal. Apparently, she screamed out, "Oh no!" and the teacher found it and, the next thing you know, the sherriff's department showed up. I believe they moved out of state after the incident. I hope she's okay and not scarred for life because of this.
  2. turbo, I think about this every stinking day. And I teach in an elementary school. It seems just about once every couple of weeks, some kid brings a weapon to school, whether it be a knife, plastic gun, or whatever. Last school year, a second grade girl was expelled because she had a small gun in her backpack. She had absolutely NO idea it was in there. Apparently, the family was out camping over the weekend and dad, in a hurry to pack stuff up, put the gun in her backpack, meaning to unpack it when they got home. Well, he forgot about it. Rules are rules, though, and the girl--a total sweetheart and overall great kid--had to be kicked out. THAT was a crazy day at school. I pray that it never happens in our town or at my school, but, really, I pray that it doesn't happen ANYWHERE. It's sad that sometimes kids think that is the only solution.
  3. Key word here is should. I do think it was the deciding factor between Braun and Kemp in 2011. To take it to the extreme example, do you think the World Series MVP can come from the losing team? I think this question is a good test to explain why many people prefer the MVP to come from a playoff team. I don't believe that has happened. BUT, if I remember correctly, Fred Lynn of the Angels won the ALCS MVP in '82 for the losing Angels team.
  4. I can't imagine Josh Gordon in Green Bay. He appeared pretty bored with the city of Cleveland. I can only imagine what he'd think if he lived in the town of Green Bay during the season! New England is probably the perfect place for him. Belichek will keep him in his place or cut him if he doesn't. I totally expect a Randy Moss-esque renaissance from Gordon the rest of the season.
  5. Playing a slight devil's advocate here, but why NOT play the Dodgers in the Wild-card game? We've played them well this year and Kershaw has a history (yeah, yeah, small sample size) of fizzling in the playoffs, for whatever reason. On PAPER, sure, I understand why you wouldn't want to play them. But to be the best, sometimes you have to beat the best. Oh, and we seem to have trouble with the Rockies at home. Or at least it seems like that. Anyway, carry on and go Brewers!
  6. They must have watched the Badgers game today.
  7. I don't have too much to add to the thread but I have to say, I was very impressed in how well-versed he was in speaking with Sophia last night after the game. I hate to say he spoke "eloquently," but he certainly sounded very intelligent. I was very very impressed. I think he could have a future as a public speaker/broadcaster.
  8. None of this matters! The Red Sox or Astros are going to win the World Series! I've been told this countless times on television and in articles that I've read. We're all wasting our time!!!!!!
  9. [sarcasm]I’m sure we all know Aguilar’s mental state better than the guy who spends 8+ hours a day with him for half the year...[/sarcasm] Well, again, he asked for the day off because he was mentally in need of a day off. Is that the best time to use him in that situation Mr. Snarkypants? The bold part of your post was completely unnecessary. Completely.
  10. Yes, I believe I heard or read that the players decided to keep wearing the retros because of the good mojo they brought. I'm not sure if they decided as a team, though, or if the starting pitcher for each game decided to keep the mojo going.
  11. I'd probably pack it in for the night and play for next week and the other 15 games rather than risk Rodgers getting hurt worse tonight. Defense is still pathetic. Offensive line is still slow, slow, slow and bad at blocking. Ho hum. When do pitchers and catchers report? (What? The Brewers are in the playoff hunt? Am I a bit early with the comment about spring training?)
  12. Sprained MCL for Rodgers is our best hope, I think.
  13. Well, looks like nothing has changed with the defense.
  14. I wonder if they could do some special seating arrangement, like third base side of the stadium is Cubs fans only and first base side is Brewers fans only. They could do some cross-stadium cheers/chants. One side wearing all white, the other all blue. Make it a more fun atmosphere. I LOVE the pregame video idea. Awesome. THAT should be sent to the Brewers PR department.
  15. Yelich stays relatively hot. Even the three double plays last night were hit hard.
  16. maybe I missed it, but CHEESE SANDWICHES!!!!! (I suppose since I'M on the west coast and the games in Milwaukee, it should be reverse cheese sandwich. Or maybe a Rueben sandwich!) [and if you have no idea what I'm talking about, well, I think the cheese sandwich thread is still in the archives.]
  17. THANK YOU! My wife and I were just talking about this last night as we saw some people on TV wearing this "fashion." As a full-fledged member of the "I Wore High-Waters as a Kid and was Bullied Because of It" club, I can't believe that this "trend" is popular. I know I was scarred for life from ever wearing pants that are too short. edit: Please note that I didn't wear high-waters on purpose as a kid. I just outgrew my pants/jeans and my folks were too cheap to buy new ones so soon. Thus, I had to keep wearing them. Ugh, those were the days.
  18. I'll assume you mean 1:53 pm? I only say this because consider yourself lucky. The amtrak train is scheduled to arrive in my town (Kingman, AZ) at 11:30 pm or 1:30 am (depending on if the train is going east or west.) But, because of the delays, it's usually either 1:00 am or 3:00 am (depending on which way the train is going.) I have ridden that train twice and both times it was so far off schedule and we're already just dying to get on board so we can sleep so the beginning (or end) of the trip was just miserable. Granted, the rest of the train ride was excellent.
  19. I just want someone to explain if, say, a team finishes 85-77, are they EIGHT games over .500 or just FOUR? Seriously, this is a fascinating discussion and one that is a reason that I love Brewerfan. I'm not going to throw my hat into the discussion because both sides have set up fairly interesting epistles on their stance. I think it's a matter of perspective, really, and everybody is allowed to have their opinion on the matter. I don't know if either side is really "right" nor "wrong." It's just two DIFFERENT ways of looking at the data. And it's fascinating. Oh, and BRAVO! for discussing it in a way that follows board-decorum rules. It's been a pleasure to read a discussion that's been interesting and devoid of name calling, etc. So, big thumbs-up!
  20. Prince Fielder, in memory serves correctly, played in pretty much EVERY Brewer game that he could possibly play in (>95% I reckon.) He wasn't taking Sundays off because he was a "big guy." BUT, I agree that some players DO need a day off every now and then. I guess some of this bodes well for the Brewers, in a way. I mean, just about ALL playoff games are played at night, and the Wild Card games are not on a Sunday. The Division Series will have game 3 on a Sunday but times are not available yet. There are NO Sunday games in the NLCS. And World Series Game 3 is on a Sunday, but that would be a night game. So, I'm not too concerned. Is it disappointing to see a Sunday record like that and the perceived view of that? Sure, I'm sick of the "Sunday lineups" too. But we WON'T see a Sunday lineup in the playoffs. I really doubt that Counsell would pull a "Kotsay in CF"-type of move, either.
  21. Could Schoop have dropped that for the easy DP or does that fit in with an infield fly rule?
  22. Sure is nice to put up a big first inning. Now, don't shut down the offense and/or have an implosion on the mound that lets Colorado back in the game. I'd really appreciate a nice, relaxing win tonight.
