  1. I rented a guesthouse from Airbnb out in the Buckeye area (west valley). It was great! $66 for the night (plus fees) but still came out WAY ahead of even a freaking Motel 6! The drive wasn't even that terrible! After the game, we did the surface street thing all the way from the ballpark back out to the west valley, rather than fight the construction on the freeway. It was a piece of cake.
  2. I will be at school, unplugging from the world at about 11 am (AZ time) until I get home, when I can watch the (recorded) game on the DVR (thank you Extra Innings package--assuming you work. At least 4 times in the 20 years we've had the package, the DVR has recorded black screen because Directv didn't activate the package. I'll be calling to confirm tonight. But I digress. . . ) I will be soaking some brats in beer overnight so I can stick the pan on the hot grill tomorrow, open the windows, and enjoy the game out on the patio. Man, been waiting all winter for this!
  3. I forgot about a minor quibble that I had with the ballpark. It had to do with the carry-in policy of photography equipment. I had my camera bag/backpack with my dSLR, the main lens, and a telephoto lens. Had been planning on taking some photos from all over as I had in previous years down there. Well, security would only let me in with the camera and the main lens. I had to bring the telephoto lens back to the car because they made a new rule about lenses that are bigger than the body of the camera. If you have those longer lenses, they are considered "professional" and not allowed by the general public. Now, my telephoto lens is just the ordinary kind that you can buy that gives you a decent zoom but doesn't allow me to count the freckles on Counsell's face, for instance--it's not one of those giant-sized lenses that you see on the sidelines of the Super Bowl. So, I had to make do with my main lens and the poor zoom capabilities of that lens. Very disappointed with that.
  4. It's funny that this alarm clock issue came up. Just last night, before bed, I finally took a picture of my alarm clock because I knew mine is on its last legs. The last time we had a power outage, I tried resetting it and, as I did, some of the button membranes under the physical buttons must have finally broke so I can't reset it any more. So the next power outage we have, it's toast. Unless, the power goes out at midnight or noon! This baby I received for Christmas when I was probably 9 or so? My sister received a stereo. Both of us were so thrilled looking at these and checking them out that we both failed to notice the Intellivision by the fireplace that Santa had left. We've got photos of both of us, completely oblivious to the video game system just sitting there while we fiddle with these new fangled clocks and stereos. And then there is a photo of our reactions when we saw the Intellivision. I was such a goober, just staring in awe-filled wonder with huge eyes and this grin of unbelievability on my face. Priceless. If you notice, half the LED numbers don't even light anymore, so over the years I've had to learn "Clock-Radio-Ese," the language of old, dying clock radios.
  5. Hmm, this is tough. I'll go with 17-14 4 vs STL 3-1 3 @ Cin 2-1 3 vs Chi 1-2 3 @ LAA 2-1 3 @ LAD 2-1 3 vs STL 2-1 4 vs LAD 1-3 3 @ STL 1-2 3 @ NYM 2-1 2 vs Col 1-1
  6. You know what? GOOD! I would hate that he (or anybody) got hurt on that astroturf field they have (unless they changed it and, if so, I apologize to the citizens of Montreal.)
  7. 2019 Brewers Predictions Win-Loss Record: 94-68 Playoffs (Yes, No): Yes Highest Playoff Level Achieved: World Series All-Star Game Representative(s): Josh Hader, Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich, Mike Moustakas, Travis Shaw Offensive Player of the Year: Christian Yelich Starting Pitcher of the Year: Corbin Burnes Relief Pitcher of the Year: Josh Hader Most Surprising Player: Ben Gamel Most Disappointing Player: Jesus Aguilar
  8. I was really thrilled with Happ's first year, especially after he was able to watch Kaminsky become a dominant college player while Happ was a redshirt. I really thought that maybe the time between his freshman and sophomore year he would work on an outside shot. And I kept waiting and waiting and waiting. Ugh. To be so good underneath the hoop and be absolutely NOTHING outside of the paint was just terrible. He became one-dimensional and, to me, a disappointment as a basketball player. Was he good? Yes, absolutely! But He didn't even TRY to round out his game a little bit more.
  9. Whoa! Virginia playing like garbage AGAIN as a number one seed. A lot of game left but still. Wow
  10. I have the same final four, but with UNC winning it all.
  11. I haven’t been there to confirm...but based on the previous pics it appears that is just the opposite side of the sign/tarp. So one side has the barley M, and one side has the AFFP logo. Again...on a brand new sign/stadium, it would seem to suggest there’s something else underneath that they don’t want revealed yet. Or, as noted above, perhaps it was just a last minute update when the AmFam deal came together, and is a temporary solution for this spring until they can update the sign permanantly after Spring Training. My wife and I were there today and can confirm that this is incorrect. The American Family Fields of Arizona logo is on BOTH sides of the tarp.
  12. I agree with this statement. When the show was on FOX, I would routinely have at least one or two loud belly-laughs per episode. This year, I've yet to really laugh much at all. A few giggles and that's been it.
  13. I don't understand the last one: "distance from pitching rubber to home plate extended 24 inches, in the second half of the season only." They're going to make pitchers throw from 2-feet further???? They're going to move the mounds in all the stadiums back, in the middle of the season? What am I missing? I don't get the purpose.
  14. I saw today that Keuchel and the Astros are talking one- and two-year deals today. Bummer.
  15. If you're on a surround sound system, this is easy to accomplish. All you need to do is make sure your receiver is set to a 5.1 array (many programs and sports are broadcast in Dolby 5.1) and then simply unplug the center speaker--I usually just pull the wires, temporarily of course, from the back of that speaker. Voila! Instant surround sound of the stadium sounds only. (Note: Sometimes the subwoofer will make slight reverberations from the PBP guy or color guy, depending on how their sound has been mixed by their audio engineer.) It's pretty great, especially for football. If you're NOT on a surround sound system, well, then I don't have an answer for you. I still remember back when I was a kid that CBS (I believe) experimented with a game using no announcers and just the stadium audio. My wife remembers this, too. We both believe it was the Houston Oilers playing somebody. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Announcerless_game Heh, I found the link AFTER I typed up the above paragraph. But after reading the wiki article, yeah, I remember all of that.
  16. I was reading about that today and it made me think of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" when the old man is arrested and says, "Look, I had a lovely supper and all I said to my wife was 'that piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.'" I won't play spoiler of what happens next, in case you haven't seen the film. But that's how I felt. Bryce said something that he kind of wishes were true and people are up in arms that he dare say something like this. Who cares??? I know this is a "tampering" issue but really, in this day and age, who gives a flip?
  17. As did just about every team AGAINST the Brewers back in the days when we were terrible and Doug Melvin was pushing for this very thing to even things out for the teams that didn't have the desire to call up all their guys on the 40-man so they could save money. Personally, I am all for this proposal. There is no need for some teams to have 40 guys while other teams save some bucks and go with only 29 guys. At the very least, they should allow 40 guys to be up, but every day there is an "active" 28 guys and the rest are inactive for that game. There would also be a limit on how many of those "active" players could be pitchers. I see that they are already thinking of implementing something like that. In short, I see it from both sides. When you're a contender, the 40-man roster is great for the reasons you gave (i.e. help winning games in September.) When you're not, it depends on if your owner is a penny-pincher or not to determine how great it is.
  18. I just hope all of his lead offs from first base are literally one step away, all his singles stay as easy singles rather than rounding the bag, every time he runs the bases he stays up and NEVER slides headfirst, and that if he does go for extra bases he better make it standing up--if the outfielder didn't fall down, he better stay at first base. Seriously, (hmm, maybe that first paragraph is actually serious, too) I really believe that he'll be okay. There WILL be some setbacks and there WILL be some successes. I'd be happy with 15-20 starts from him for the Brewers big league club. Any more would be gravy. I am not expecting 2017 Nelson. But it's certainly possible that there will be glimmers of that season in some of his appearances.
  19. I wasn't sure which thread to put this in. But in case you missed it, Yelich appeared as himself (and as the NL MVP) in tonight's episode of "Magnum P.I." It was an okay appearance but he sported the Brewers cap and made my wife giggle like a school girl. Plus, he totally flirted with Higgins.
  20. huh, I thought the Phillies would rather go after Trout in a couple of years. Good for him. Now let's get the other free-agents under way (rolls eyes.)
  21. I don't know, I enjoyed it. It was good to see baseball and talking about the Brewers. My wife was rolling at the antics. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
  22. I've had that perk from my 20-game subscription for several years now.
  23. I'm just hoping that he'll be average, too. And I'm hoping that he doesn't overcompensate things and ends up tearing his elbow.
  24. yup. It's just dead air on the Brewer broadcast on mlb.com Disappointing edit: It's working now. The audio sounds terrible compared to other broadcasts, though.
  25. I know many (MANY) of you are tired of winter, but here in Kingman, AZ we've had a tremendous amount of snow today in just a few hours. My backyard has 13 inches of snow on the ground at 9:00 am. There was ZERO at 3 am when I got up to use the bathroom. Yes, I know. BIG flippin' whoopty-doo. But here in the desert, this is unprecedented. We had 8 inches on New Years Eve 2014 and I thought that was the best it would ever get here. Wow! The good thing is a) it's a snow day! No school!!!! b) I don't have to shovel at all (it'll probably all melt by the weekend.)
