  1. chorizo won both races on Friday, I thought. I hope they do this year's contest a little bit better than last year's. I didn't even have to witness it to know how botched it was, reading all the stories on the internet. Good lord.
  2. this may have been discussed in a previous post, but how much of an effect does Rickie not having his best friend and neighbor, Prince Fielder, on the team have on him? I've gotta think that, albeit small, it could be part of the problem. Rickie and Prince were teammates all through the minors and the majors, were good buddies and probably good influences on each other, keeping each others heads on straight. Without that influence this year, could it possibly be affecting Rickie at the plate, psychologically?
  3. Sorry to say it, but I am your man. I never got into their music. "Fight For Your Right to Party" is the only song I can name by title. The song just didn't "do it" for me and, unfortunately, I didn't think to highly of the group from there. You know what they say . . . first impressions . . . I'm sure I'm not the only one. I'm sure there music is fine and probably better than "Fight for Your Right" but I never gave it a chance and probably never will. Feel free to close your mouths now. Or at least wipe the drool off your lips.
  4. trade for Pujols, he's not doing anything of note. Seriously, I wouldn't be against a Derrick Lee signing. Cantu doesn't thrill me, either, though. I'm really sad that Gamel couldn't finish out the year. I thought this would be the year that he "made it" in the big leagues. He was decent to average in his month of play which is all that you could ask for.
  5. glad to be on west coast time so I don't have to be listening to this all groggy and sleepy-like. Braun is a beast back in So-Cal.
  6. I have probably about 10-15 thousand cards sitting in boxes in one of my closets. Most of them are from the 80s and 90s but I have several hundred from the 60's & 70's as well. Plus another footlocker full of cards I bought in the last 10 years. Yeah, most of them are virtually worthless but that's debatable. To me, the monetary value is not even worth calculating because it is one of the few childhood memories that I still have and can still experience (Intellivision and the Milwaukee Brewers being the others.) Looking through them every now and then when I "clean out the closets" is still fun now as it was back then as a kid. Refractors? I think I got one once in a pack. Autograph cards? One--for a Ben Sheets card (I sent in the redemption card or whatever and got a letter saying that it was unavailable so they sent me a Bob Uecker autograph card instead.) Relics? Not one. But I do have several very valuable cards. Which is nice. But would I sell them? Never. Of course, I just keep them in the closet, too, with all the common cards. I think the valuable ones are all in plastic sheets, though. Baseball cards still rock. Too bad that the hobby went down the toilet once the moneygrabbers got into the game.
  7. . . . and Joe Morgan. He kind of pushed Uecker out of the way during those broadcasts a lot of times with his analysis, leaving Ueck to only analyze pitcher/catcher stuff.
  8. yeah, Dodger Stadium was pretty loud in the bottom of the 9th. I've got a friend at the game and he says it's total raucous.
  9. I missed the reasoning behind the call-up for Harper, as I was at a friend's house for some happy hour festivities after work. Did someone get hurt?
  10. we've got one thru just a local company (not ADT or anything) and it works quite well. Only $25/month. Simple to use and gives some peace of mind when away. They'll even call you on your cell phone if they know in advance that you will be out of town. Okay, so this wasn't much help. Just saying you might want to check out one of the more local businesses to save some money and get the same services.
  11. yeah, saw this yesterday. . . . . but untuckin', beast mode, and generally anything else is "unclassy." Whatever, Cardinals, whatever.
  12. yeah, the wife and I sat at Chili's and watched the whole game during dinner. Nice comeback I must say. I'm glad that they didn't just pack it in when it was 8-3. Small moral victory, I guess.
  13. Regarding the first comment, I disagree. Every time I have seen an Orioles highlight this season, I swore for a few seconds that I was watching highlight video from 1983 or so. I thought Al Bumbry was roaming centerfield again. Regarding the final comment, I agree that Denver should go back to the old uniforms. New England I'm kind of torn as I like the new ones better than the old ones but I could handle the Patriot Pete uniforms as well.
  14. He still needs some work on the post-game show. Seemed very discombobulated to me when he was reading the scores and doing the game highlights. He definitely has potential. I'm pretty sure Ueck wouldn't have "okayed" him as the new guy if he wasn't up to snuff. He's probably still a bit nervous.
  15. my wife commented the other night that he sounds like a mix of Al Michaels and Vin Scully. Except without the stories and general good PBP skills. So the emphasis is on he "sounds" like them.
  16. these new "Summer Shandy" commercials bug me. Now I can't randomly scare the crap out of my wife by yelling, "SHANDY!" along with the people on the commercial.
  17. That sounds like fun! Don't forget to say hi in spirit to ol' pitchleague when you hit Kingman, AZ on your trip!
  18. I shall now sign out for the remainder of the afternoon/early evening as I begin the annual Opening Day internet embargo. Let's hope Directv is doing their job and the game, which I am recording at home, is not mysteriously blacked out or something like it seems to do every year on Opening Day. Go Brewers!

  20. OPENING DAY by Terry Cashman VERSE Well, I count up the days in a winter haze Since the leaves began to fall. Now it won’t be long ‘til the sun comes shining through. When the camps start breakin,’ my spirits awaken To an irresistible call, Of an old American song that’s always new CHORUS And the robin is here, The sky is so blue. There’s a band, there’s music And the flags are flying, too. The grass is so green, It’s like never before, It’s Opening Day, I can be a kid once more. VERSE Now will the champs repeat in the summer heat? Will the races go down to the wire? In April ev’ry team has a chance to wear the ring. And there’s a rookie phenom Who tore up the farm, And the fans never seem to get tired Of chasing the dreams that dance in the air ev’ry spring. CHORUS Yeah, the robin is here, And the sky is so blue. There’s a band, and there’s music, The flags are flying, too. The grass is so green, It’s like never before, Yeah, it’s Opening Day, I can be a kid once more. BRIDGE So open the gates And let the people in. Let the games begin. And may the home team always win! CHORUS The robin is here, The sky, so blue. There’s a band, and there’s music, And the flags are flyin’, too. The grass is so green, It’s like never before, It’s Opening Day, Yes, it’s Opening Day, It’s Opening Day And we all can be kids once more. GO BREWERS!!!!

  22. pretty sure because the Sox break camp today. Or at least that'd be my guess. Greinke with not the greatest day thus far.
  23. Michael Pineda left tonight's game with some pain and soreness behind his throwing shoulder. Oops.
  24. 20 seconds on google tells me he was worth $500M in 2009. Is that in mint condition? Magic Johnson seems to me to only be in very good condition.
  25. Utah, believe it or not, is beautiful. A trip to Salt Lake City is great, then rent a car and travel to Bryce Canyon, Zion, Canyonlands (better than the Grand Canyon in my opinion), and Arches in a big loop. Lots of hikes, lots of natural beauty, lots of extreme temperature changes. (July 4th, 2000 we woke up at Bryce Canyon to freezing temperatures and icicles on the fences around a farm. It was 97-degrees by 11 am.) I'd go back to Utah in a heartbeat. Luckily, I can if I really wanted to since it's practically a day trip for us.
