  1. help me out here, because I'm curious: if this is true, wouldn't a SABR manager then have a half-dozen very angry bench players because they never ever get to be used? Wouldn't a SABR manager then have a 19- or 20- man roster instead of 25? A SABR manager (and by this, I mean a manager that only manages with advanced metrics) would fail in probably most situations as a manager and wouldn't last very long. Real managers do use stats and even the advanced metrics (I'm sure that Roenicke has looked at them/used them in meetings with coaches and/or players) but they also must stroke the egos of players, unfortunately. There would be a massive revolt by the backup players, some of the guys in the starting lineup would eventually voice their displeasure that their friends aren't getting any playing time, and it could trickle down to the minor league players as well. On topic, I enjoyed the article and saw myself shaking my head in agreement. And there were even a few, "yep, that sounds like 'so-and-so' from Brewerfan.net" comments from my conscience. But it's a necessary evil, having advanced metrics. I enjoy reading about them and learning and improving my baseball knowledge. But it's also not the end-all be-all of arguments. Most of my friends would laugh me right out of the argument if I brought up advanced stats in a normal conversational baseball argument.
  2. TBS has the NL this year, so no McCarver until the WS if the Crew makes it.
  3. I couldn't believe last weekend that I found some Lakefront Brewery beer here at my local beer imporium of Kingman, AZ! It was just the Pumpkin Ale but it was astounding to me that they had something from them. I guess they will order something from pretty much anywhere if you request it/order it so somebody else must have ordered it or something. I enjoyed the flavor but it was pretty much like drinking a liquid pumpkin pie with a bit of an alcohol kick.
  4. well, half way there, I guess.
  5. I'm with you, Russ. I love the D-Backs too (not as much as the Brewers) and, thus, I have to cheer for them to lose, not win, much to the chagrin of a LOT of my friends here in AZ.
  6. It's called WAR is a telling statistic . . . but what it doesn't tell you is that any player at any time in MLB can do stuff that you don't expect. Too bad that this all happens when the game is more or less over instead of in tight 1-run games. But I'll still take it.
  7. nice. I like to see our MVP Braun coming through like that. say what you will about Prince but Braun has been money this month (a big month for voters.) Of course, it doesn't help Prince that he has little protection behind him in the lineup, but still . . . .
  8. all right, that's it for Volquez. C'mon Braunie, let's break this one open!!!!!
  9. well, it's been a great start for Yo tonight, minus the HR that Plush had for a second. Keep pushing it, Crew. And clinch-a-runi, Philly!
  10. Funny thing is, he could probably still play a mean SS and/or CF for an MLB team if he absolutely had to.
  11. Good Lord, I do NOT want to face the Cardinals in the NLCS. Sure, it would make for good stories and media hype etc. But I could not imagine the indignation that we'd have to put up with if the Brewers would lose such a series, not to mention all the garbage we'd have to put with before and during the series that "we're not worthy of even being in the same sentence as the St. Louis Cardinals" etc. etc. ad nauseum. Sure, it'd be great if we won a series like that, but $1000 bucks says we'd still be considered "lucky" and whatever heaps of trash the Cards would toss at us.
  12. Pat Tabler. End of discussion.
  13. THANK YOU! I've had to do double-takes about 4 times already tonight because that's what it sounds like BA is saying. As for the strange sound of Prince's HR, I've been saying that in prior IGT's from Cincy. The audio mix is messed up because every batted ball doesn't sound like wood bat on leather ball. It sounds like wood stick hitting a rubber/plastic pitching machine ball.
  14. I'm secretly hoping that the Reds and Cubs players are discussing with each other that "anybody but those stupid Cardinals" should make the playoffs and that maybe they'll just lay down and die just a bit to allow the Brewers to sweep them and ensure STL can't win the division. A guy can dream, I guess.
  15. at least Boston is making sure Milwaukee isn't alone. The Sawx had a pretty darn big lead, too, and have blown it almost completely.
  16. I'm pretty sure that STL and ATL would play a tie-breaker game for the Wild-Card spot.
  17. Where's the FOX Trax box? I noticed it was gone during last night's broadcast and it's not there tonight. I can live without it just fine, thank you, but after it being there all season (while no other FOX broadcast had it all game long) it's kind of strange not seeing it anymore.
  18. okay, so I hope that our fans don't take this all the wrong way and start booing him--especially if he has a bad inning. It could get ugly.
  19. I'm loving that the Brewers make their trip to Phoenix the day after we get out of school for the year. I know where I'll be going to celebrate the beginning of summer.
  20. is that better or worse than the whole bar letting out a bunch of loud "YEEEE-HAAAAAAAA!"s?
  21. yeah, I now consider myself officially getting concerned. I still think they're going to be all right and, Lord knows, we were over due for a losing streak. But the lead's down to 6 and only 5 in the loss column. The sweaty palms and nervous twitches haven't arrived yet but they're on the horizon.
  22. or you could totally go against all laws of baseball nature and put the DH in play for both leagues as well as making the pitcher bat. Have a 10-man starting lineup. It'd be just like little league. Heck, if a pitcher gets on base, you could even use a "security runner" like they do in HS baseball a lot (or at least they did when I played.) I'm half-serious about this, by the way.
  23. well, Ryan Howard hits a 1st inning walk-off on the road. Who knew that was possible???? Okay, just kidding. Let's go, Brewers!
  24. I'm not trying to snarky here at all--this is my genuine opinion of this. I think you will have a hard time getting everybody to sign this. I would believe that most players in that picture would feel that this piece of art will be on ebay the second that all autographs are collected and would refuse to sign. But what do I know? I say "go for it" because it'd be an awesome thing to display in a home. But I'm not sure how lucky you'll be, especially with the big boys (Fielder, Braun, others), getting all the signatures. I wish you luck. Keep us informed of how it's going.
  25. help me out, since I barely saw that 6th inning (was watching the Pack--guilty as charged.) Did Gomez botch 2 plays? I saw the misplayed single that he let skip by him for a triple. Did one get over his head for a double as well earlier/later in the inning? Is he that rusty out there or did he look apprehensive about making a play because he didn't want to hurt his collarbone again? Too bad that Narv looked so good and then couldn't get the third out. That Yuni play at first was pretty darn close. Was he called safe legitimately? Did the ump blow it legitimately? Did Prince pull his foot off the bag too early (my first impression--I've still only seen the play one time)?
