  1. I'm pretty sure that is a very big reason but doesn't tell the whole story.
  2. nice staged photo of Coolidge in an empty ballpark. What's with Judge Landis and the other guys in those Gestapo outfits in the background?
  3. boy, Chuck Crim looks like he has a 28-inch waist in the photo of that '87 card. I've probably seen that card hundreds of times (it's my collection) and I've never noticed that.
  4. yep, I agree with you 100%. I think the issue that some have is that the stathead's take their advanced sabermetrics and put them as the be-all end-all of discussion; as if they will not accept that there are exceptions. I agree with the stats and what they tell me, historically, about a player. But every now and then those exceptions pop their heads up. Maybe for only a week. Maybe a month. Maybe an entire season. These outliers will "usually" resort back to the mean, but not always. It seems like a lot of sabermetric disciples on this board and across the internet will absolutely refuse to acknowledge the existence of any possibility at all of a player making a change and becoming a better player (Jose Bautista springs to mind as a player that stunk and stunk and even though the sabermetric statistics said that last year was a fluke, based on his previous 7 seasons or whatever it was, he has brought his game up and changed the complete perception of his abilities.) Russ, I like your post as it seems that you are very open to variables and exceptions to the rule. Bravo! edit: please understand that I am NOT advocating that Kotsay, Betancourt and the like are now "healed" and will change their game for the better. That's still to be determined. I believe that they will return to their mean numbers. However, I can accept that there is a chance, however small (cue the "Dumb and Dumber" clip again), that maybe they have turned a corner and become a different player, however slight of difference that may be.
  5. you know, I was thinking about this during the game. These close games are actually going to be quite helpful and beneficial to the team's psyche in the post-season. Every game will be tense in October so we might as well be getting used to it and gain some experience in lots of close games.
  6. As much as I would enjoy to see this scenario, I am equally scared that while celebrating in the super tiny clubhouse somebody would get hurt. That would suck.
  7. Our Terrace Box 20-pack playoff seats are in 424 row 2 which is pretty good. Two seats and parking passes is $850, though--ouch. I can't remember what the World Series prices were a few years ago but I gotta imagine that 4 more tickets (games 1, 2, 6, 7) would have to be at least $100 per seat, so that's another $800. G'uh! Still, well worth every penny if we get to use them all.
  8. hey, hey, hey now!!!!! Stop with the photos of Presidents! Take it to the Political Board!!!!!! I know I was a pooh-bear about this earlier (when it was 50+) but a 6 game lead in mid-August is pretty exciting. I STILL, however, think it's too early to get too excited. I've seen too many big August leads in my life that disintegrated into oblivion before you knew it.
  9. I haven't read the rest of the thread (I'm only on page one thus far) so forgive me if this was already discussed. . . . Prince got a good throw because all his bad throws (okay, maybe not all of them; how about most?) were when he was playing in and so he threw the ball high. On tonight's triple play, he was throwing from the bag, which gave gravity the required time to get the ball down to where it belonged. On all those bad Prince throws, he forgot to take gravity into account and was throwing as if he was even at the bag.
  10. I don't know about in the past, but this lineup makes me think Roenicke is thinking, "Hey, we're up 5 games. Might as well get these other guys in there and give some of the regulars a day off. What's the worst that'll happen? We'll lose and be up only 4 games. But if we win, they get some PT and we stay up 5 at least." Oh, well. I've become accustomed to these lineups on Sundays and get-away-days over the years so it's no big deal. Heck, if you look around at lineups of other teams on Sundays and get-away-days I'd bet that there's more than a few teams that do this as well.
  11. Josh Lewin is actually a pretty good PBP guy. He does the Rangers PBP during the season. I enjoy listening to him. Williams is only a passable guy in the studio. He talks like he has the beginnings of a stuttering problem. I guess I'm glad I can listen on the internet.
  12. yeah, I saw that the other day on MLB Network. Too funny. They had the binoculars and everything. But it wasn't just a sign saying "FASTBALL" or what not. They had a second sign they'd put up as well. Something like "Sizzling" or "Looping" so, when held up together it would be "Sizzling FASTBALL" or "Looping CURVEBALL" and the like.
  13. 1975 All-Star Game? That'd be my guess.
  14. never mind, found it on 94.5 Lake FM's website.
  15. and the MLB Audio link has not been fixed with the correct feed for the Brewers. Is Packer Pre-game for a pre-season game really going to be pre-empting WTMJ's broadcast? Guess I won't be watching or listening today. I guess I could listen to the Pirates radio guys.
  16. Same here. It's days like these that I appreciate the $15 subscription to MLB Audio. It'll be good to listen to Uecker and Provus again. Haven't listened to them in about a month.
  17. the material of both look different to me. Granted, their both photographs but the "real" ones seem to look like the real thing while your jersey's seem to have a "shimmering"/"glossy"/"shiny" appearance to them. Again, it's really hard to tell otherwise, and photos never do anything justice so it's hard to tell anything. Bottom line, I guess, with anything like this is if you're happy then who cares what anybody else thinks. edit: shoot, I forgot to say thank-you for posting the pictures. Also, I only know you as rawbecht, but it was weird posting my question to post pictures because I thought I was talking to Kurt Russell. Is that from "Big Trouble in Little China?"
  18. I saw this story as only a series of tweets, thus far. Haven't seen anything official. More to come on this story, I'm sure, but, like Favre, I won't believe it until I see it. I hate that I have to be a "doubting Thomas" on these types of stories but I've been fooled too many times in the past.
  19. rawbecht, could you post photos of your jerseys to compare to those pictures that you posted? I wonder if our detective work could find anything different. You don't have to, of course, I'm just wondering if you'd allow us to look and compare.
  20. I'm just hoping that Betancourt will pull an Edgar Renteria in late October and then, just for a few minutes, EVERYBODY on this site will be happy that we have him on our team. If only for a moment, of course. A guy can dream . . . .
  21. I enjoyed that article a lot. Witty comments and, to me, some pretty good analysis. I'm not a stathead, but I love looking at stats and learning from them.
  22. If you go to Cooperstown, make sure you eat at the Doubleday Cafe, right down the street from the HOF. Order the Beef Spiedie sandwich. It is absolutely delicious. They were so good that we had those sandwiches for lunch each of the 3 days that we were in town. We still talk about how good they are and how we wish we could have it again. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.
  23. Yeah, right http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif. Nah, just teasing. It's good to hear some analysis from other fans from other organizations. One of my best friends is a Cardinals fan. He's quite knowledgeable as well and we enjoy having discussions about the Brewers and Cardinals without "fighting" about stuff. Sure, we rib each other but that's all it is. Welcome! We hope you enjoy your stay. And we invite you to stay longer than just this series, too.
  24. Do we have an idea on which umpiring crew will be in St. Louis for the series?
