Well for starters, Brown was left unprotected for the rule 5 draft. It's not my stance that they shouldn't waste another day on him but they made that possible. I have a lot of faith in Burnes having a role with MKE going forward. I'd like to see him show he's back before I count on him for anything in 2020. Supak, I just don't know but he fits the same mold as Burnes. I'd like to see him succeed a bit a AAA before I count on him. There's talent down there. I don't dispute that, but expecting any of it before July is overly optimistic in any role. There's a big difference from being glad a player is in the system and knowing there's still time to wait, and thinking you can just plug them into the MLB roster without consequences. So you're almost understanding where I'm coming from. The way you seem to be approaching this though is that the team is already down 1 or 2 SPs and in my argument about the 3 in depth, we're trotting out 1 or two of Burnes, Supak,or Brown come Opening Day. It's not in my approach that the team can expect 3weeks to a month's worth of starts from the planned starting 5. Doing so takes us in to May. And every week thereafter closer to July in your suggested timeframe to consider relying on the trio of depth. I don't see it that way simply because by that stage you're now behind the 8-ball in regards to the trade deadline. You wait til July to feel comfortable on calling up from that trio you're not giving a long enough sample size to say, "I'm comfortable with so or so heading to the Postseason and have no desire at a trade to improve on what so or so is producing in his 3-4week sample size" Playoff roster is basically set. So on that, I have no problem calling on Burnes, Supak, Brown because the way the roster is constructed you dont need them Opening day. And every week down in AAA is showing off who fits the pecking order on the need to call one of them up. Now you're approach is valid if come Spring Yraining through to Opening Day and we've gotten to a place where Pitchers are headed to IL to begin the season or all of the season. When that jappens though, I'd expect Stearns to make a trade like a Claudio to support that unlucky occurrence. But say Burnes is lights out in Spring Training. I think they try him again from Opening day as the bandaid. Gotta stay flexible and reasonable. Last add. Brown can play in Milw's minors. Had a team picked him for rule 5 they have to play him on their ML team. What is your argument against Brown currently? That he's not ML ready. So why is another team going to play him from Opening Day on their 26man roster? Not allowed to play him in the minors? That was the caveat Stearns was able to leave him exposed. Brown would have had to make it what til August? On that teams 26man or be returned to Milw.

And those spots are only needed when someone has flamed out and needs to be tossed away. Burnes down Albers Jeffress Chacin etc. If you don't have holes, you don't need to add guys. If you start with this many question marks, you will have holes, you will need to trade from the farm to fill them. Nope not at all concerned at SP depth. Woodruff, Anderson, Lauer, Lindblom, Houser. Peralta, Wilkerson, Burnes, Brown. Nope, you very much should be concerned with SP depth. There is ZERO chance they go to Wilkerson. They refused to at all cost last year. Burnes Brown and Supak couldn't pitch at AAA last year. If one fails or gets hurt early, you have 2 options. Suter and Peralta. Those options moving out of the pen weakens the pen which they also can't afford to do. You're right on Wilkerson. For some reason I thought he made two or three starts last season. Im still not concerned. You gave a better option in Suter at #7. The way you are speaking towards Brown, Supak, and Burnes gives the impression the team shouldn't waste another day with them in the organization. Got it, right? And they especially cant be thrown in to a bullpen role seeing as a failure for 1 season of AAA games as starters completely proves how terrible they will be if thrust in to that role when Peralta and/or Suter is pulled from their bullpen role in to a starter role? Got it, right?(Burnes 7-0 2018 RP)

Joc Pederson, Ross Stripling to Angels
brewcrewdue80 replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
So Pederson, Pages, and another ML starter? or just Pederson and Pages and worded poorly? -
Graterol doesn't get them a full season as a SP. Maeda will and is proven. 4years cheap of proven full season is a huge win for the Twins. Graterol is probably the Dodgers answer on a RP and Dustin May is now entrenched in their rotation for 2020 Personally for the Dodgers. Just wow. What a power move. Can they set the all-time record for wins in a season this year? Price gets to pitch in the NL. You know he can go 200+ This has got to only turn out great for LA. I think Boston got a bit hosed honestly. We'll see just how bad with the money. Ahh my mistake the Red Sox get Graterol not the Dodgers. Sooo Bullpen need LA? I mean if you're winning 7-1 is that really a big need?

Nope not at all concerned at SP depth. Woodruff, Anderson, Lauer, Lindblom, Houser. Peralta, Wilkerson, Burnes, Brown, after that Clancy can probably add 7 more. Depth is not a problem. Performance and outcomes may be but lets have 3SPs hit the DL first before concern settling in. Meanwhile you have numerous spots to put that depth if you want in the bullpen. Burnes went 7-0 in 2018 there. Where does the depth in your mind stand if/when Burnes and Brown start pitching to below 3ERA at AAA? Now they're blocked wasting away at AAA. Burnes & Brown really put a damper on how too many feel negative about the Brewers pitching. They werent injured like Nelson. Just had a really poor season to expectations. And its as if well their career is over. Like pitchers especially much older(Miley) reinvent themselves in one offseason but these two aren't capable of bouncing back? Yeah no, I fully expect one to be valuable for the team in 2020 and if possible even both.

Misc. Offseason Brewers Prospect Rankings
brewcrewdue80 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Not Brewer related but MLB put out their top 100. No Brewers of course. But interesting that they had all top 10 of the catchers in it. Feel like generally 2-3 in a season has been the norm but 10! Just wow. At the same time, I think they are over ranking a good majority of them. I feel like maybe 1 catcher prospect every 3 years graduates and lives up to their potential more than 2seasons. Otherwise the rest struggle to even get a major starting role. Stearns may have found a way to get ahead of the Catcher curve by getting Narvaez Because with a catcher like Pina I really didnt see the team losing ground to the other 30teams with what he brings. In fact I think Pina brings a positive in to top 15 teams in baseball with his defense and effect he has on pitchers. -
It may just be that other stadiums have moved their walls, like Seattle I recall. Atlanta's new stadium. I dunno. I still think Miller Park is great for the hitter.

Take this with a grain of salt. Taijuan Walker was mentioned on MLBTR on him not being signed yet, but whatever team it was(mariners I believe) that were tied to him were still in talks with him. Now in the Comments thread an Arizona fan was pretty adamant that what occurred was Walker can't pass a physical, his arm is shot. That the 1IP the last game of the season was a sendoff for him by the DBacks. They had all intentions of not bringing him back since his shoulder or arm is basically damaged goods that wouldn't make it through another season. That initial interest from Seattle was deterred by a failed physical. Maybe whatever deal that goes down is just a way to send him off as a Mariner whom he was drafted by. Basically the explanation why you don't hear of teams looking to sign him when via the stats and his 1IP you'd think he'd be good to go for 2020. And shouldn't cost much with the upside of his past performances. They aren't going down that road because he's done for as a SP. I don't know why in regards to a RP though? Again take it with a grain of salt, this theory was given by someone's comments to the article. I think 3 times I noticed the same story reply. I went to post this earlier today, but couldn't find this thread oddly. So there ya go.

That's cool. I was just giving potential reasons why. The players for Milw or the Shadows during games increasing the ks. I really am unsure how you come about the rankings. We all know Miller Park is a top 10 hitters paradise so putting them top 5 for parks that increase strikeouts is just the opposite what you'd expect. How can it be great for hitters while being bad for Ks against hitters?

Bauer has 1 season that beats Woodruff. Miley is old had his best ever performance the 16games he started for Milw season #9 for him. Was worse than Woodruff last season. Castillo I can give to you. Sonny Gray is an every other year results pitcher. This isn't his year for one. But I get it you mentioned one can make an argument. This is the retort. No way. Linblom is the glue that makes or breaks what Stearns offseason will be graded as. He comes in carries an ERA below 3.7 and pitches 160+ then Stearns has won this offseason overall. Brett Anderson is Wade Miley and better if he pitches a full season. Lauer, I shown where his career is a 3.6 type ERA when you remove him from Coors Field. I think Lauer=Davies. We get the bonus of Urias to play SS where Arcia was the worst in baseball with the bat. Narvaez/Pina will make a solid Catching corps. 1b/3b is my concern but we contended last season with a wreck at both positions. Braun amount of playing time there may benefit more than we think. (100games say there vs maybe 50-70) So again this relies on Linblom and his results. Anderson is more fragile than Miley sure, but until he is injured, on paper a full season Anderson is better. Reverse optimism. Believe Bauer will be an Ace like that 1 season. Believe Miley will be like he was for Milw. Expecting Gray to be an Ace when he's just as often been a #4. If you're going to give these guys their best on paper, then you gotta put in some bests optimism on the Brewers team.

I'd guess the day games and when the sun/shadows move from over the plate slowly over the pitcher in regards to ballpark increasing strikeouts. But generally I always thought the Batters eye(wall in outfield) was considered around the best in baseball. Or, maybe the Brewers as a team full of strikeout guys make it top 5. Just think Miller Park came about when the Brewers had Jose Hernandez who lead the league in strikeouts. Jenkins/Hall combo. Mike Cameron. Weeks/Hart combo Gomez/Weeks. Gomez/Davis/Reynolds. Carter/Villar. Entire team in 2017. Entire team in 2019. That has got to be a lot to do with it. And probably a lot to do with the Bases no out results having such a team filled with K players.
-
I am all for this, we have a LH RP not named Hader to call upon with confidence. How long has that been? Claudio certainly didn't bring any. And you know Suter can go multiple innings so he could bat often mid-game appearances. If Kneble returns and his a force, the bullpen is going to be such a strength.

What does Shaw's AAA have to do with any of my Erceg choice? I mean you see now what I'm holding on hope to. Remember it was his 1st full season go at AAA. Often you see players that make it to the majors break out a 2nd time through. Just think how long Tyrone Taylor has been at. Put up 3 months this year hes knocking at 800OPS door. Make it 4 and 900+ is in reach. That puts him on the radar for callup. It did with Grisham. Just showing how far he has to go. Oh wait you're talking about his 42games at AAA Last season at the age of 29 and ML experienced? Shaw for his career at AAA looks to be 774OPS after those 42games giving him a total of 200gms played at that level over 3seasons of time. You look at Shaw's first two seasons he hit 752OPS the first and 674ops the 2nd. At ages 24&25. Erceg was 24 last season. So by comparison to Shaw he's on the same timeline Shaw was which included him playing 3b for Boston that year 65gms and 813OPS. Wouldn't that be nice?
-
That would be a surprise since Erceg hasn't hit since rookie ball, has he? He played AA all of 2018 the first time there-688OPS. 2019 all at AAA-702OPS. Higher level so take an optimistic side that it was higher(probably 2hits) As I mentioned his first month was well to the tune of 954OPS but followed with his worst month in May at 530OPS. 2 modest months above 700ops and 1month+2games below 620 OPS. 2nd time around let's see him have more months at 954OPS. Force his way in being promoted.

I know this is probably more you making a comment on the third base platoon, but if everyone is healthy Erceg is going to have to earn playing time this season with Morrison and Healy possibly ahead of him at the corner infield spots. Erceg might have a clear path if he breaks through (why I mentioned him as a possibility), but he's not even being gifted the AAA third base job. I dont believe currently Healy will make the team. He didnt sign a ML contract. He'll be in camp and an emergency bat if Gyorko/Sogard cant start opening day.. Wasnt he signed 1st? Then Sogard and finally Gyorko? Anyway. I think Erceg has the opening to jump in to 3b role so he'll be the one to contribute. It may only be 1month but its something. I expect he wont be as prone to team control and be shuttled a time or treefour to wind the clock back either way. Why do I have optimism? I think I seen he was above 800OPS to start last season for more than a month in to the season then went cold and kinda a flat 700OPS struggle from there. So new year new tricks continue on that start and become Milwaukee's 3b. to point that the team cant be serious contenders with his potential flop showing is something the team overcame from Shaw last season. That is all.

That is about what I thought with the signing. We found our Albers this season. At least hes experienced. Played for the Cubs last season. We traded JJ fpr Phelps.

May as well bump this thread. From the looks of it, for Starting pitchers remaining of note are Taijuan Walker, Danny Salazar, Aaron Sanchez, and Matt Harvey. I think it is surprising to me Salazar hasn't been signed. Walker next. Sanchez has to be a fit for like Pittsburgh on a 1year sign and trade hope type deal. Or whomever isn't in the 72+win category. So. Salazar or Walker? Walker is 27 coming off TJ for 1IP last season. He has a 105ERA+ for his career and a high of 135 in 2017 his last full season pitching. Highest IP is 169.2. He earned 5mil last season his Super 2 year 2. So maybe that's the holdup here? He's due for a 3rd year arb. Maybe there's a date being unsigned to meet a FA signing not involving the Arbitration process? So upon signing with a team, they would have control of him for 2021 as well. Or maybe I'm reading that wrong and this is his final Arb year and becomes a FA after the season? I just don't understand how he's not signed with a team already. Salazar. He's 30 also coming back from TJ 1Start for Cleveland last season 4IP. He has a 112ERA+ for his career but a high of only 125 in 2015. He's a high K guy with also a higher Whip then you'd want. That 2015 season he acheived 185IP and 2016 he was an All-Star. His contract last season was 4.5mil, his last Arb deal reducing from 5mil in 2018. Career Fip is only 3.61 and every season he pitched he was below 4Fip. That is something Walker can't lay claim to. Ah geez, now I'm looking at Salazar and BRef has him as 5.162 service time. So does he fall on the last year of Arb too? Either way you slice, I think the upside is there in both to do 1yr deals even if you're paying 4-6.5mil for it. Is there something I'm missing on why these two aren't signed?

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/keston-hiura-669374?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb Keston Hiura is a prize you don't part with. He finished top 20 in Barrel% top 10 in hard hit% 22nd overall in baseball overall exit velocity. Scroll down furthe Fastball stats great ✔ Breaking stats great✔ Offspeed stats great ✔ And thats as a rookie. His one hindrance is 30% k rate. But in what way would you think that keeps up as he gets experience? The barrel pct is high. He didnt struggle vs offspeed or breaking. Senzel is avg in exit velocity, what he carries is being fast. His numbers were poor vs fastball but great vs off speed and decent vs breaking. Ks were below avg but pretty close. So youre staring at a leadoff hitting type vs a #3 bat or 4 if Hiura doesnt get his K% down. Hiura is about to join Yelich in production with his bat. Its scary that I think you may have to separate them say Yelich 2 Hiura 4 simply because they are probably headed for an 85÷HR combo this season. Hate for 50 of those to be solo.
-
Oh puke. He did every bit the warning signs I mentioned when we went down this road before. He was hit hard back then, now that translates to 1.9HR/9 from 1.4 previous season. Walks were higher. There isn't upside in this guy. Clancy this time I believe you have Milw overpaying by quite a lot. Just pass. He Ks a lot of people and had some 200IP seasons. So one would think he was good. But just not the case.

There was a mention on MLBTR a cpl or 3days ago that Corey Kneble would begin throwing in near future. I believe it was mentioned he wouldn't be ready to begin the season. You can probably go to Mlbtraderumors.com and look under Milwaukee and find it within a few posts. Edit here just did it myself. Taken from Mlbtr Brewers’ reliever Corey Knebel is progressing well from March 2019 Tommy John surgery, manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). Knebel won’t be ready for the start of the season, but he’ll begin throwing from a mound next week as he ramps up his rehab, McCalvy reports. Knebel signed a one-year, $5.125MM contract to avoid arbitration in December, suggesting the club believes he’ll make an impact in 2020
