Jonathan Lucroy Trade Challenge
brewcrewdue80 replied to Matt Breen's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Reilly's trade idea would be I think too much honestly for LA to get Lucroy. That's 2 first rd picks, a 2nd rd pick(who had 1st rd potential) and then an end of 2nd rd draft pick(I'm guessing LA must have acquired this because no way do they get in competitive pick lottery) Do these prospects have the top rankings you'd think Lucroy would fetch...No. But would they come this offseason? I'd think all three would be top 100(getting in top 100 prospect ranks as history has shown usually comes from those selected in 1st/2nd rounds so I think it's a given just looking avg to get ranked) How about this one: Probably get crapped on but it's creative. Brewers send Jonathon Lucroy to Detroit Tigers for: Nick Castellanos Derek Hill Austin Kubitzka Joe Jimenez. Detroit being a top contender for the Central and running out of time with their aging vets. Move Cabrera back to 3b, Martinez back to 1b. Lucroy catches and is an immediate boost in offense for Det. The Brewers take a shot at a former top 3b prospect in Castellanos to fill their 3b need long term. They get Detroits #1 pick from 2014 in Hill. A Groundball specialist SP in Kubitzka who with Milw's future improved defense in the infield will be a pleasant addition to have starting. And a non-draftee surprise in Jimenez who clocks in the upper 90s and maybe fills a RP roll down the road. Nothing sounds a sure thing in this return but there lies the potential. If you went to the preseason 2014 I don't think Lucroy for Castellanos straight up would have been taken due to his upside and fit for Detroit's plans. So to get him, a 1st rd selection, and 2 added pieces seems like a good haul for the team suddenly. I think whether the team is in rebuild mode or just float at sub-mediocrity for a couple seasons, Castellanos' 3b fill in/potential is a perfect fill for the team while keeping 3b warm for when/if Lara cruises along to it. Maybe you ignore Jimenez and ask for Bruce Rondon an oft-injured young RP who coming in to 2013 had closer profile written on him? I just don't know if I'd rather have the injured former prospect vs the young one to maybe build upon? Rondon is out currently with a right biceps tendinitis as a RHP. Do you really want to rely on someone with tendinitis in his throwing arm to reach expectations? -
All season the Cubs have batted the Pitcher 8th. Maybe there's some sabrematric statistician that has come up with a stat that based on Batting order/profile the #8 guy would typically be coming to bat with a man on base and being of the Bunt to move over more often than a 9th batter and 0-1outs when coming to the plate. Vs. 1-2outs or having runners on base? Or maybe simply just Maddon making a decision that is obviously opposite over any manager in baseball and due to the Cubs true talent, he's going to look like a genius manager that the team added vs just a clone of most what is available today.

They were leading the division before the collapse began. Come on man, If I polled all the GMs in Baseball if they'd take a 51-47 record through the team's first 98 games of the season, I'd be willing to bet 90% of them said mark it down, I'll take that to begin the season. Cards were 54-44 last season(36-28 then to finish). That isn't garbage for a team on 60% of the season. Add the 20-7mark and thats 77+% of the season. The Brewers were 16games over .500 77%+ through a baseball season. It's an epic collapse the final 36games 22% of the season. Not after that first month being a total collapse.

Yeah, they were. But recently, they have had a clue on the draft side (see Coulter). They also made a splash internationally (Lara). Also, if they get the salary relief, they can try to sign more international prospects like Lara. Just dumping Lohse and Garza sometime in may nets about 2/3 of $23.5 million for international signings and draft picks this year, and Garza'a also under contract for 2016 and 2017 ($12.5 million each year). Getting two or three more prospects like Lara on the international market each year could be a huge boost to the farm system. Plus, tanking this season nets a good pick in the June 2016 draft. You do know the international market is capped before penalties? Lara's signing alone basically put Milwaukee at that cap last season. Whether Milw save's 20mil this season and 12mil next season won't change their cap til penalties kick in limits. Can't fathom this being a team that signs up 20mil or so of Internationals taking an added 17mil hit roughly and the 2years limitations of now only being able to sign like 250k max for internationals. Now, Maybe you mean signing players like Jose Abreu or Alex Guerrero guys not under the internation draft limitations but in no means prospects essentially. Signing 27yr old Cuban players to ML contracts and hope they work out. I've always said, a contract like Garza who can net a prospect or two in return when traded is a perfect use of signing. Take 12.5mil for less than 2years sell off the 2.5years remaining for a prospect hopefully around top 100 and you again have 12.5mil to spend each of the next 2 seasons. Meanwhile you also have a prospect in your system you wouldn't have. Love it if the team could do that every couple of seasons with a FA signing. I thought Lohse would be that originally and he should have been dealt in 2013. Two Pitchers that would maybe fit that this offseason would be Mat Latos or Scott Kazmir. Kinda #3s with #2 type outings. Get one for 11-14mil a year for 3 or 4years and trade in a season or 2. I think that is the game Milw has to play in FA with SPs. It's not like prospects ranked in the 50-100 range for Pitching are TOR types generally. I remember Zach Lee being around 50 in 2013 with TOR maybe potential but really a #3 expectation. Hes now the Dodgers 14th ranked prospect vs the 2 I think he was 2 seasons ago. So I don't feel it's unrealistic for the Brewers to get a top 100 ish prospect for Garza in return under his deal. He is a proven #3 not a prospect with #3 profile and hopes to become a #2 at best. Is that impact for Milw in return? Depends how you look at it. The team getting a #3 like a Peralta at this point to pitch for them at that 500+k range to fill your back half of the rotation is a plus vs paying 10-12mil for that.

Ryan Braun - Worst Contract in Franchise History?
brewcrewdue80 replied to JJHardy7's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
This by Danzig: I''m by no means against trading Braun if he hits well enough to draw interest, but given his baggage and long term contract, i just have a really hard time seeing another team taking on THAT contract, the baggage, and also throwing in a couple of high quality prospects. This thread originally began as discussing Braun having the worst contract in franchise history. 3HRs in 2 days suddenly makes him the trade piece to get quality prospects in return? It's like the Jean Segura contract extension his full rookie year...Sign him now! to Thank god we didn't. to he's part of the Brewers next core or very much worthy of a good prospect. Give it time. Production. There's no reason to trade Braun today. It's a salary relief trade and selling low on his overall production. He should be kept through the season at minimum, barring some owner/GM offering a dream trade scenario before then. But it's like Danzig said, a team to take on that contract, his PED baggage, and to do that dream scenario? I know I just woke up an hour ago, but I didn't even dream that. -
I would think of 1 time you did. It's the only thing I remember about him. The mound charge vs Greinke that resulted in Zack's collarbone being broken. It certainly was the talk of BFnet when it occured.

But you also get years like last year where it took an epic collapse to keep them out of the playoffs. Last year was not an epic collapse. After the first month of the season this was a team that played 10 games under .500. So you include after the first month and take the epic collapse part ignoring the last month? 9-17month? In other words they played 2games under .500 between the first month and last of the season which is what the team was believed to be a .500 team. Which it only takes 6games winning vs. losing on the season to have 87wins. 1 game a month. Now back it up 11days/10games and that the Brewers went 2-8 in or 11-26 for a collapse and suddenly between the epic collapse and the Brewers first month of the season they were 4games over .500. Now we have an owner who believe just getting in to Sept at .500 record and a hot Sept month can propel you in to the playoffs. It's happened many times so he's right. Take that first month away and up to the final 10games leading up to that last month the team would have been 4games over .500. Exactly what the owner is trying to build. 20-7/11-26=51-47 in between span. The team wasn't garbage since that first month. They became garbage in the final 6weeks of the season.

I know there's those that have predicted Brewer HRs before the game. I'll predict this will be Bryant's first HR on the season of Fiers. Again, Lester, Arrieta Brewers facing team's best pitching. Having Gomez back will help but still down Lucroy and Gennett. You just can't believe a team should beat ML's best pitchers when 3/8th of their position players are on the DL. Now 1/4. No matter how poor a start they were off to. And look. Next series. Brewers vs Dodgers. 1st up Kershaw. 2nd Greinke. Team will finally see a break in projected starters the next series vs the Cubs avoiding Lester/Arrieta if projected correctly. 9games to complete the 25/32 within division start. 5-15 thus far. I feel like being 10games under .500 within your division is terms to be let go as a manager. In any sport. It should be hard to get to 10games under .500, only took this team 20games.

Wow that is a rosy picture painted. Rival Executives. Meaning they must be the ones calling in about such players. It is sad that Garza is being listed as somewhat overpriced. I thought the deal in the first place was a bit under what was believed he'd get? And it comes with the 5th year option where it's more team friendly protection than Player friendly money making. It's nice to see Davis draw interest. He to me is one of the better trade and get value types that I think a team would overpay for the belief there's 20+HRs in his bat because that's special suddenly. Also surprised, gladly, that KRod is listed as drawing interest. 1yr deal would get it. But the team acquiring him has him for a 2nd year and he's not exactly cheap for a RP with 20min of terror to witness. Again, injuries must be at play here. Mention KRod but no Broxton, seems he's of regrettable value. And where's Lind? Is this Exec from Detroit with this talk? That's my guess since they have a RP need with Nathan going down. Maybe the Mets? Fuerria? suspended, Parnell not looking good at a return. Their SS need. Just kinda surprised the rumor mill swirling already on a sell-off anticipation when its May 1st. One would think it'd still be 3weeks away at earliest.

Big difference. Facing a AAA Pitcher first appearance call-up and Facing a Team's Ace. Which btw, I feel like the Brewers are facing a team's ace in every series, which would mean seeing a lot of #2s too. Not to defend them or anything, they are ML players and should be able to hit ML pitching. Feel bad for Peralta after last season he's now 0-4 to begin this season...Do we have the Jeff Samardzija of a few seasons ago brewing?

Drafting Philosophy Thread
brewcrewdue80 replied to xisxisxis's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Splitter, I thought the overall talent wasn't that high. If it's Unusually high then by the time the Crew picks at 15, wouldn't they be getting one of those first round grade talents? I was of the belief that the draft was weaker and didn't really have much in the way of top 10 type players and then a bunch of end of 1st rd early 2nd round talent? Now, if that's the case, I'd willingly pick the risk-reward guy netting a top 10 talent over a late 1st round talent at best. If the draft is filled with 1st rd talent, then you just take who you're most comfortable with and likely not the injured pick. I thought the injured group had separated themselves as being around top 5 worthy certainly top 10 over the teens and later rankings. If the group is pretty much awash with equal talent whomever you're picking. It doesn't really matter. You just hope your scouting picks the one that progresses the best of that group through their intuition. -
I love the if the Brewers decide on a full rebuild rebuild and don't think they can sign Gomez to an extension part. Come on. We should know already, the entire baseball world Gomez will go to FA. It's not a don't think. It's just letting Gomez walk with nothing to show for it. Here's the thing about Lohse or Garza being in play soon. Teams are losing SPs. Tanaka along with Nova/Capuano, Wainwright, McCarthy, Bailey though Reds not likely a playoff buyer, Skaggs, Peavy and Cain, Iwakuma, and Darvish/Holland/Harrison/Tepesch/Perez Some quality pitchers, some mid #3 types. Which is exactly where a Garza or Lohse can fill in. Wouldn't Garza seem like a perfect fit for the Yankees? Atop their division and over-reacting that they need to fill in their pitcher holes to remain in that division race? Seattle. Why not Lohse? Between Paxton, Walker, Happ, and Elias as the group following the King, they could use that solidifier Lohse stands to be. I don't know about he upside we can get for Lohse. Looking at Seattle's prospects a Ketal Marte 2b/SS type of Utility or everyday 2b seems to be about the value I'd think of Lohse. Edwin Diaz sounds a little bit of an intriguing SP to maybe snatch up and hope develops. You acquire Marte, it would maybe make Gennett available for trade if he got it going.
-
It all really depends on how much a sell off the team goes in to. There's not a whole lot of depth. Trading both Lohse and Garza I think requires a trade of a SP that can be plugged in to AAA and used this season. If only 1 of Lohse and keeping Garza then the team should be able to manage. We talk about Segura who I think can get that SP in trade if he's removed we're fine. Parra, Gomez, Lind, Ramirez the longer the list of trades are you have to look at replacements. Rogers can/will likely play 1b if Lind is traded. Gomez and Parra traded? you think a close to ML ready OF in return. You only trade say a Garza and Segura with Parra/Lind I'd look for that high upside A-AA player. You trade away the whole lot of trade pieces and you have to mix in a ML ready prospect with those longer away pieces. Gotta field some kind of 25man that's actually at least Replacement level talent. I doubt ARam has any kind of trade value even if he starts OPS around .770 or better. He's just too pricey and a clear salary relief type. Lind you gotta love. Brewers stand to get more back than Marco Estrada with his performance thus far. And he has an option so the team getting him has him full season next year. Gomez is the prize to be traded. And there in lies part of the problem. What if he's the first to be traded? No doubt he's worthy of a MLB ready prospect if not 2 by the start of next season. Let's say the team goes that route. Now you start thinking every trade will be for ML ready types. #4 type SPs a Brock Holt type Utility. With this team, it doesn't seem they really have any plans for the future, sans the Gallardo trade. Do they continue on that kind of trade talk? Or plug holes in the 25man supposedly and field a team middle of the pack again? There isn't a right or wrong answer to ML ready acquiring vs A ball 19yr old acquiring. You hopefully get the best talent with either choice. Just hopefully they get Talent.

Matz is a top 50 rated prospect, and has started off well at AAA. Segura doesn't get him - much less adding in Nimmo or Conforto - both of who generally rank in the 60-90ish range on the prospect lists. Matz would be great, but it'll need more than Segura. So Matz around 50 can't be had for Segura, but Segura would be good enough to get around a #50 Renfroe or around 50 Hedges? Taken from the Optimism thread: Since the start of 2013, Jean Segura ranks among qualified National League Shortstops in several categories: Batting Average (1st, .272), Stolen Bases (1st, 67) Hits (3rd, 316), Singles (1st, 245), Triples (2nd, 16), Runs (3rd, 142) That's a solid selling point. Matz while good stats, has had TJ once and reads previously other ailments that held him back. There's logic there with all the SP the Mets have that he could be the lameduck future with a 2nd TJ ever happening. A draftee from 2009 who didn't make an appearance til 2012. So the TJ would have happened in 2011 or earlier. What's the blowout year worried for TJ to happen again? 6years? For the Mets to get their SS situation figured out at a cheap value that's gotta be worth something. Matz has 12BB in 22ip so theres some control concerns. Someone made mention of Marcus Molina as the SP to acquire. Younger by 3 years. Reads as having much the same upside as Matz. Only doesn't come with prospect ranking. If you're the Mets who would you rather part with? Keep in mind, the Mets are group with Harvey, DeGrom, Colon, Gee, Niese while having Zach Wheeler on DL due to TJ and Noah Syndergaard in the waiting. That's 7 legit SPs Matz being in AAA makes 8. Just going to waste him as a RP? Meanwhile the team trots out a AAAA SS/3b while Wright is out. Have a 30yr old in Murphy playing 2b who's a FA to be and you're team is 15-6 leading the NL East playing a quality Bat for SS in Wilmer Flores who grade below avg for his range. How many runs defensively will that cost them at that prime position? They are without Wright, withough D'Anaud key offensive contributors, with a solid pitching staff that will keep games low scoring. Just makes some sense to want a better SS defender with the upside offensively Segura has to keep pace from this start. And saying Segura is available for trade, doesn't mean he's got to July 31st with this team. If a club wants him they'll have to pay better value in trade. And still Segura was a top 50 prospect himself. He's proven he's a capable ML SS defensively. He's not a question mark like prospects are. That to me would mean he's worthy of a top 50 prospect for sure in commanding price. And every week he keeps his OPS hovering around .700 his value goes higher.

Really? 9games out of the playoff by May 1.... You may want to check your claim. As of right now in the AL Cleveland with 6 wins is 7.5Games out of best record in that League. Phi and Wash are just 6games out of best record in the NL. Milw is the only team right now that if more than 8games from having best record in the NL much less from a Playoffs spot. My claim is accurate... I went back 3 or 4 years and found at least multiple teams that were 9+ games out. Out of the playoffs? Not the division correct? It's 23games? In to a season. It requires 5 teams to have 9more wins than the two-4 worst record having teams at May 1st. The Brewers winning today wouldn't qualify even at 5wins. They began the day 8.5games behind the last playoff spot. I would love the chart showing your claim being true. I think you're looking at out of the division and not wild card.
-
There are usually 2-4 teams every year that are at least 9 game out of a playoffs spot come May 1st. If the deals were really that much better these kind of early trades would be happening. Clearly it isn't ever worth the extra loses and lost revenue. Really? 9games out of the playoff by May 1.... You may want to check your claim. As of right now in the AL Cleveland with 6 wins is 7.5Games out of best record in that League. Phi and Wash are just 6games out of best record in the NL. By selling earlier, the team who receives our player get more starts, more at bats, more innings pitched, essentially more wins (or WAR). Because of this, the Brewers could and should be able to demand more of a return. Also gives them leverage to wait if they aren't getting a worthy offer as the deadline isn't forcing their feet to the fire. Hypothetically this is true...realistically I don't know if it really works this way. If it did I think a lot of teams would sell early, but almost nothing happens before mid July. Even the Cubs and Astros the past couple years waited till the end. Without looking back, I assume the Cubs and Stros' didnt start the season at 4-18 and become 10 games back of a playoff spot before the end of April. It makes sense to sell off an asset earlier, but at the same time you're also trying to sell tickets and put a ML team out on the field. Plus, to trade pieces away so early, you're really committing that your season is over. It's not easy to do with 2Wild Card spots. A mild winning streak somewhere in the season that pulls a team around .500 means they are in the running come Sept for a wild card spot these days. 5th wild card right now has 11wins. 14th in the League Philly and Wash have 8wins. Go 8-2 in 10games with a .500 record for that 5th spot and both teams have 16wins. Hard to commit that a team is truly out of it these days, minus the Brewers this April and May of 2013

There is just no way Urias is available in any trade. None. Take Felix Hernandez pay half his contract for Julio Urias and it's not being made. He's 18 in AA and even with the move up to AA he's putting up Cy Young type numbers on his stat sheet. I'd fully expect him to make the Dodgers ML team mid season next year after the Super 2 cutoff. He'll probably have to be put in some RP roles for his Innings limit to see him make it through the season but you just don't give away a Cy Young SP talent for about anyone.(Hey LA Angels offer up Trout for Pederson/Urias) I wonder how that would play out honestly.
-
That SS they have deep in the Minors would be Gavin Cecchini in AA. I like the Mets top half of prospects even Cecchini sounds appealing. There is not a dream of getting Noah Syndergaard in a trade. I don't like Catcher prospects Plawicki would be the next in line. The Mets then have a LHP by the name of Steven Matz who sounds pretty perfect for the team. Like Really perfect get for in a trade. Because he's in AAA, and you figure Lohse will be traded plus maybe Garza leaving 2 SP holes to fill(Thornburg is an immediate guess) But Matz would be that Prospect acquired you run out from the All-Star break giving ticket holders a reason to show up later in the season to check him out. Then based on overall production to date, do the Brewers get Dominick Smith a Lefty 1b of the future? If his bat progresses. Considering the Lucas Duda era and the start of Smith, it would likely be a good time to grab him in trade before he makes progression to a much higher value. Now, I'd dream to get a Michael Conforto who seems of the Clint Coulter type offensive potential. Don't know what we'd do with 2 of them likely getting to the Majors on the same timeline but the batting upside would be great. There's Brandon Nimmo a solid sounding OF better than Tyrone Taylor/Michael Redd profile by a little bit. He'd maybe pave the way for the big Carlos Gomez trade. One would wonder though is Matz for Segura plus Nimmo or Conforto too much a price? Vs Matz+Smith being more in line?

I think we may need to sweeten the pot a bit to get Seager, but you aren't that far off in your assessment imo. If we could get Van Slyke from them too it'd be a double score. What exactly would Peralta, Sardinas (Rollins on his last legs) and Davis command from them? But why Davis? They have Van Slyke, Pederson, Ethier, Crawford and Guerrero as OF options. What would sweeten the pot is just like I mentioned take Ethiers or Crawfords contract from them. If you're trading away all your quality payroll guys I'd sink in the money as getting the stud prospect in return. The MLBTR just posted that Lohse and Garza are in the trade discussions early with the Brewers being so far out of it. That's going to be near 20mil off the books just this season and 12.5mil each of the next 2 to 3 for Garza. You take on Ethier's 18mil contract play him in the OF or even have him try out 1b and look to maybe trade that contract down the road if need be...maybe paying some money to take it off the clubs hands. Crawford's too, but you might have to ask LA to pick up a small portion of it. I think they make Van Slyke a full time OF then more upside with the bat. Meanwhile giving Peralta to them vs a 10mil type SP of Anderson or McCarthy types and taking 18mil in payroll off their hands. They possess 25mil roughly to pay a new FA signing next year. Zimmerman? Cueto? They'd solve their SP problems real quick for quite some time. Guerrero moves to 3b. Sardinas at SS. A callup of Darnell Sweeney at 2b. Gonzalez at 1b. Van Slyke Pederson and the high paying OF the Brewers didn't take from LA. I think it's very reasonable from both sides. What LA loses in Seager, they get a SS and SP and money freed up to go after another Stud SP. Or they could hold on to Ethier and Crawford paying 40mil nearly for their often times one at a time on the field purposes. Don't have the money to sign a Cueto or Zimmerman. but still have Seager to play SS or 3b as a rookie. This can work.
-
Come on did anyone really expect the Brewers to beat Johnny Cueto? He was #2 in Cy Young last season behind the behemoth of a season Kershaw had. Cueto had every deserving right to win a Cy Young last season only somebody performed historically. 6hits per 9inning pitched is what this guy is averaging the last 2 seasons. While having 9ks per 9. It's why I said earlier in posts with having to face Wainwright/Lynn/and this Cueto we were staring at a 7win month maybe. How many wins would it take to keep Roenicke's job....but apparently it's just 4wins this month and his job is secure. How about Lohse getting 7IP after those early runs given up? That's good on his end.
