When is it time to try and move Weeks?
brewcrewdue80 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Yep, should be common sense in that Weeks is owed what the Brewers gave him in his contract no matter what they do with him. Only way out is really by trade and another team taking it on. The Brewers could send along some cash to make a trade a little more appealing to a suitor but then it's money spent on sending Weeks away and depending on the amount how much the team really has left to use on picking up some other player. It's great Weeks had a great game today, but so did near every Brewer batter. Hopefully, it's a sign of better things to come, but I'm not going to hold my breath on today's success being the turning point for Weeks. -
Behold the Talents of Jean Segura
brewcrewdue80 replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I'm confused. Where are these HRs coming from? I thought Segura was going to be gaps doubles/triples kind of guy lucky to reach double digit HRs in a season? I know it's early and it could be a long while til his next HR, but he's obviously on pace suddenly to reach double digits in HRs by season's end. It just makes it all the more pleasing that I correctly called for him to bat 2nd in the lineup before the season even began. That it was absurd to insert a player with higher BA over a guy like Weeks with OB or HR power to score runs. I guess what I seen in Segura last season was that he reminds me of a Cirillo/Loretta/Vina types who just know how to hit a baseball and are pests at the plate for the opposing pitchers. It's been awhile since I'd seen that on a Brewer team..those three....that Segura stood out to me. Aoki last season was that way too but he's older so he didn't leave that big an impression. I am very much warming to the idea of a contract to Segura with each passing game. But that's all the Homer in me. Business wise- the team still waits through the season. As I said earlier in other posts, Austin Jackson to Starlin Castro are the likely pairings of player contracts we are looking at by doing it this off season vs waiting. -
Instant Replay is all about the amount of time it takes to review and in many instances not change a thing after delaying over 5min. to do nothing. Personally, I'd do it strictly by whoever is watching it, see it wrong buzzes and makes the change. The umps down below have no review of the play themselves. If the play is clearly wrongly called from who is watching up above then change it. No questions asked, the man above tells him what happened and changes the play. Things that he'd be changing would be obvious missed outs on the basepaths. Catches or non catches that were called the opposite. Fair or foul balls in play. To me these would be calls that in the first replay it is blatantly obvious to buzz down and change. If it's unclear after one look then forget it the play stands. Where all the delay comes in is getting the replay sent down for the umps/officials to look at. For them to look at the play and it just takes too much time. Other things that I hate the umps/officials being given the knowledge of there being instant replay is they sure seem to get calls wrong more often than before. It's like well, I can make a mistake, replays happen and I can have my mistake overturned. I mean in the NFL, the amount of mistakes the officials made was just annoying. Coaches having both their challenges used up before the end of the first quarter. And it became a problem in coaches having used up their challenges so then not being able to challenge another poor call later in the game. So if I were to implement an instant replay system, the umps down below would never spend one sec seeing an instant replay. The eyes from above would just buzz down, ump would be informed of the play change and resume the game. MLB would have a no questions asked policy on these plays if they want instant replay so the managers could delay the game more by going out to have the overturned play explained to them/argue over it. The first manager to walk up the stairs to have a talk with the ump would be tossed end of story. As fans say, baseball already takes too long and adding more delay in games being letting umps review a replay to determine if a call is correct or wrong will just turn more fans away from the game. So if any play is overturned by the man upstairs it is blatant black/white in his eyes without a doubt upon first replay or the game continues.

When is it time to try and move Weeks?
brewcrewdue80 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I've bashed Weeks hard since I've joined BFnet. He's already at a -.7WAR on the season You get in to the splits on BRef and he's .048 1 hit in 24PAs in high leverage situations. 4rbis now in 99PAs. It's just we're at where the only justification you can argue in defending him is he has a high BB rate. That is all he is bringing to the team. It's the first month of the season we're seeing his worst roughly. Small sample size all that good stuff. Take away Rickie's best OPS month last season (July) His numbers then avg out to: .221/.308/.375 .683OPS 16HRs 48RBI 26%K 11%BB rate. in 496ABs/558PAs. This to me is what is expected out of Weeks and I don't know how all of you feel on these numbers for a 2b and say whether he's an asset at 2b in MLB. Here's the thing. As I recall last season, the team kept shuffling out the players that were struggling all way up to the deadline I believe in hopes to find someone who sees a reason to pick up the phone and inquire on them for a trade. K-Rod/Wolf/Morgan off the top of my head as I recall. And all it seemed to do was lower their value/opinion. Moving forward, this will continue with Weeks IMO no matter his struggles on through til next season's trade deadline. I question this/ Let's say he plays to that line above or worse now through next deadline. Nobody works a trade with the team. Can the club release at that point? Which would be giving him no chance of being able to avoid the club voiding out his 2015? How big a backlash would the Brewers get with statline that low or worse? I'm going to assume if Rickie were to be traded that his clause travels with him. Then another team would have to worry about an 11.5mil 2b with under .700OPS and -WAR numbers? This would have to already reduce Rickie's value by an added amount. That's a pretty big downside if you ask me to take on a player who's showing ever declining numbers and he may force you to take another year of his play at 11.5mil cost to your team's payroll. This leads me to the conclusion that the team cannot move Weeks until he's gone on the DL to start the season next season and he's not projecting to reach the 600PAs or 1200 combined to have to take on his 2015contract. As bad as he's been you would think a team wouldn't offer Rickie 11.5mil come 2015 if he were to become a FA. At which point what is Rickie's 2015 FA year worth currently if he were to go on the market? 4-6mil? That's how I'm looking at it for a team to consider Rickie his 2015 price can drop by a lot once avoiding his PA requirement. Just sit back enjoy the Rickie show at least another 220games are in store. -
2013 Season in form of a GIF (daily updates)

I come back to this because it's soo funny. And I don't see the batter tip the ball. I see it glance on the catcher's mitt and continue straight in to the family jewels. I still question why he positions himself left of center and not closer to take cover from the catcher. Back on topic. Behold the Talents of Jean Segura
brewcrewdue80 replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
You're right in this regard, I don't know who has been given that type of contract so fast. Which is in lines of why I'm for waiting through this year. Castro's Contract kinda like Braun's is becoming more the norm. So, while looking at a lack of precedence I don't think it will be long before it's done. I had no idea Posey's 8year contract was for so much money after esentially 2+years playing time. It's money like that being thrown around that these ideas of Securing Segura now seem prudent. Another offseason or two and all the 20mil+/yr contracts that are out there, who knows? Maybe then for trying to buy out Arb and some FA years may just cost 13-18mil a year. It's a scary landscape for small markets as I fear all this tv money will make fielding a team under 100mil next to impossible when market values for Near AS level players are so high 15+mil a year. on through to 22mil. I get the side that wants this deal done now before it's too late. I am on your side though in barring a top 10 MVP finish type of season from Segura, I just don't see the market for him changing a lot now til the end of next offseason. -
Hiandtight I'm generalizing, this could all have been a process over the years. Hart would have been traded away that year. ARam was rumored in trades last year, while you're saying trying to win the club was at the time fully out of it. If a team can take on these players salaries, while giving up some talent in return, then that money is just used on some sort of replacement next season. If you win with the prospects you're in great shape with cheap longer cost controlled players. This, while that player you traded away, his contract is gone so the money is there to find a replacement. So, in theory, wouldn't be costing the team all hopes of winning. It's that whole Rays success in that they've done it for a long period of time and stuck with it to see it work. I don't expect every trade to work out the way Segura's has. It goes with the ideas behind finding a player trading away Betancourt or A-Gonz. Junk wont return gems. It returns junk. In Hart/Weeks/ARam they wouldn't be considered junk. Whether they returned gem players would have to be seen. But in trading them away, this isn't trading away players I seen as long term core. They would be under pricey contract for 3 years or less. And so long as the team went ahead and used the money in the offseason to fill whatever holes are there then good. This isn't a ploy in line with Houston/Miami...trade all away and then not spend any money to see the team attempt to win. They are just flat out accepting 100 loss seasons today and their fan base is hurting cause of it. I don't know how many trade deadline deals actually worked for the team acquiring the Big League player. Vs how many deals worked for the team giving away that player for prospects but I just feel it's been in favor of the team getting prospects.

How much longer should Rickie be given at the 4th spot?
brewcrewdue80 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Ah yes that whole 1200PAs Contract kick in. Imagine the uproar by Rickie if he were to be demoted at all. I'd think he'd roll to the Players Union to file some kind of grievance on the club deliberately working against him to avoid the contract kick in. And really, that's all the more reason to send him down/platoon him with Gennett. Saving that 11.5mil. Imagine if Rickie continues to struggle how many of us may stoop down to wishing some sort of ailment on him? Of course this to me is a refreshing thought because if I'm him, being lousy reduces the chances of seeing the option kickin. Already dropped from 2nd in order to 4th and now 5th. It sounds like Ramirez is on his way back skipping rehab assignment so now he's 6th and at 6th RRR may just put Gomez ahead of him and then he's 7th. Those missed PAs will start to accumulate. As for Aoki, yeah his numbers aren't there lately. But its not a fault of Strikeouts and not putting the ball in play. Two 3fers at the plate this week and all of his numbers likely lineup to expectations. Anyway, Go Rickie! Go Crew! New Streak begins tomorrow! -
I'm a fan of who gets the most opportunity. Aoki Leading off vs Gomez at 7th. Though players like Gomez who has power upside but lower OB seeing them bat 7th means that the OB hurts less since it's an 0 for 4 vs an 0 for 5 at the top of the lineup. You can probably roll either way and be happy with it. I would say the Aoki though being atop a lineup/SBs and Runs expectant would likely bring you something in trade. Vs what Gomez can bring you in trade.

Ouch omg. Sorry but so many questions..Isn't the ump a bit out of position? How poor is the catcher's reaction to that pitch? Feet weigh a ton or what? Doesn't move in any way to block/stop that pitch. Was this intentional? Missed that strike three call so bean the ump if the batter doesn't crush the pitch? -
Gonzalez to Yankees?
brewcrewdue80 replied to PrinceEatMeat's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
My guess it this trade would involve trading one scrub for another scrub. This would mean a bench player on the Yanks with has been/never will have talent or a player who once made the team as a AAAA player and has regressed upon being sent back to AAA. I'm good on any trade away of Alex if it means dumping the salary owed. 1mil+ may not be much but it's something. -
How much longer should Rickie be given at the 4th spot?
brewcrewdue80 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
What kind of batting line from Gennett would be deemed well enough to promote when Weeks is batting under .200 at that point? With my waiting theory in mind, I'm just looking for the time I can bring up removing Weeks from the lineup altogether. Going to just walk away from the Weeks bashing til end of June. Maybe he'll be batting better than the .180s he was at that point last season....better than .200 and for that matter at the .244Zips clip now til then where I won't have to come back and suggest it's time to move on once again. And maybe Gennett can underachieve well below the expected numbers it may take to call him up so to further continue standing behind Weeks' play. It's fitting that the club won 9 in a row due nothing to Weeks contributions. That the loss ending the streak would be contributed namely from Weeks play. -

brewcrewdue80 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Not that this is about the 4th spot in the lineup anymore. But I'm wondering no matter how awful Weeks does to start this season offensively/defensively...sigh that even if at this point they are ready to call up Gennett, they would wait it out until beyond the Super 2 start time on his service clock? And what day is that? So I can begin a countdown of some sort of hope. -
Behold the Talents of Jean Segura
brewcrewdue80 replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
AdamBR: The security is the money is guaranteed. The Brewers could send him down let him make minimum money until his options ran up let him play then for a lower amount due to not playing all the while risk being hurt and never getting to see those Arby paid or FA years. I think you're thinking security in knowing you will be playing for the same team. ? Maybe I dunno. Escobar fwiw, showed no offensive abilities at the plate. Meanwhile Segura is. The security for the player will be in the tunes of where rather than 550k/600k the next two seasons, Segura would likely get say 700k then 1mil plus an in line 3mil 1st year arb. And the team probably paying him in the 4-6mil range the following 2 seasons. Segura would be locking up 1.7mil these next 2seasons vs sitting around at 1.1mil. The Arby years are based on performance and any injury within these first 3years can dictate that by a bit. This is why I'm a proponent to waiting this out at minimum this season if not til mid to through next season. On Segura's side he's making more early and locking up probably a mid-range number for Arb years w/o having to perform or lose out to injury to get that money. From the Player's side, I think when a team offers a Pre-Arb til in to a FA year/s deal there has to be a pretty quick reaction to sign it. Where everyone saying don't wait it's because one he may see his value increase. Or two be less inclined to sign a good deal when he's closer to making bigger money. 500k earned accumulated is one thing. at 1.1mil earned, maybe he's comfortable waiting, that, that amount earned he's confident to sit around for a bigger money. After his 3rd year 1.7mil earned there's less reason to sign say a 6-7year deal at that date for 40-50mil when after two years he may earn 8+mil and FA of 15mil or more where in 5years he's made the 40mil and 6/7 are another 30mil or more. For me, I don't know how much money one really needs. I can't imagine how one cannot live a long fruitful life at just 1mil year over the next 6-9years time. Segura is looking for millions more than just 1mil/yr over 6-9years. If Segura feels like I do an 8year for 40mil-50mil contract offer today he'd be signing it grinning ear to ear. That's security. -
Okay read the thread. Wasn't on BF.net til this offseason I believe. Anyway Up to about page 13/14 it's about Segura. 15-18 are waste of your time. 19-23 are basically Grienke deals/outcomes/FA market and what not. Most of this was super positive on Segura. And why not? SS had no real positives coming in the organization. To remind the Rangers Deal, Justin Grimm,Leury Garcia, and Cody Buckell. Others, and I'd have been included, called for Perez and or Olt. At this point it is looking like Segura alone beats any and all combined of the Rangers offer. From the Angels side of it, How bad are they missing Segura right now? Aybar has missed games on DL. Grienke didn't get them to the Playoffs. If this was done from the Brewers side and we got Grienke for Segura+ then missed the Playoffs and see Segura take off?? Wow, wouldn't you just question your fandom for Milw? Now, Angels have Trout/Hamilton/Pujols and such so it's a wonder if Angels fans even know how well Segura is doing and that he was in their organization. That Trout High for them sure ain't coming down for at least another 8years...if not longer. Anyway, this deal...can we call it a success already? The Pitchers are questionable more and more expecially Pena more BBs than Ks at AA and Hellweg, still BBs at a high rate. It's outcomes like this that you see all the time that makes me wonder why the club hadn't traded away a Hart/Weeks already? and I recall ARam being mentioned in trade rumors. If you can save that much money and find AS potential with 6years team control at a cost less than 1year for these players, Why not make these trades?
-
How can you so there's no reason to think he'll K at 30%? His career stands at 27%. He K'd at 28% last season. Off to a near 40% clip thus far. The reason to keep on 2b is all about the power which to me makes sense down in the order. But as been said, he's not hitting the ball with any kind of power thus far. But I get that Power contact tends to come in bunches so I'm not going to write him off for 20HRs this season. There's no way Weeks bats .240 this season. This start alone hurts that chance very much. Heck in his career he's batted under .240 more often than over in seasons with 350+ABs. I don't think my expectations are that far off. Putting it lightly how many other positions can he play at with these numbers? SS? C? In the OF/Corner IF spots he'd be gone by now right? If expectations are allowed to be so low at 2b then why are we waiting for Gennett to be called up? We don't care if a 2b bats around the mendoza line so long as he has a little pop. Don't care about the defense. What I care about is the 10mil being paid to him. If he was paid 6mil or less then this wouldn't be an issue. For 10mil we're not getting our money's worth and for me if another team wants to take on that money while we put Gennett at 500k up to hit mendoza line or better then that's what I would do. That's why I'm hating on Weeks so much. The moment he gets paid he's a Negative WAR player!

Brewer contracts - Good deals/bad deals
brewcrewdue80 replied to adambr2's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Bad Contract: Gonzalez. How did he sign for over 4mil last season when he was just over 2mil the two years prior? Then to sit out and be signed for 1.5mil? Thats 5.7mil from the Brewers of his grand total 33mil for his career. He won't even make it 100games on the Brewers. For some reason I originally thought he was signed for 1mil. Agreed Axford is overpaid. Good contract:Aoki for sure. Braun no doubt. Gallardo as mentioned is a good contract. Lucroy's deal, does he get any respect outside of Milw? Estrada has to be a great contract right? -
How much longer should Rickie be given at the 4th spot?
brewcrewdue80 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Why should we expect that to continue? It's not like ZiPS is ignoring that it went up last year or has been terrible this year. It takes that all into consideration. What is your projection for him, going forward, for 2013? At prime approaching years Weeks didn't bat .240 for the season. With a lower K rate then. To me I'm thinking he's done well if he goes .216BA the rest of the season. And the problem with that then is you're looking at a .310-.320 OB. He turned around a 35%K rate through 1st 3months last year to 23% rest of the way. He's a year older at 37% thus far this season. I'm just looking at the year older, flashes of problems. Eventually, it goes the other way around. Rather than correct it his age doesn't allow him to. Look at it this way. 35% was a .181BA for him. 37% thus far is .171. at 28% for the entire year he finished at .230. After this start, I'm just afraid to believe that he can keep his K Rate, under 30%. He got worse after last years horrible first month. What if he gets worse for another month this season? What if he doesn't post a 3month stretch of 23% K rate? His Career stands at 27%KRate mind you. I stated this in the lineup thread that to me Weeks' value was in his BB% rate as he never hit well for Avg. and the fact he had that BB% rate vs who else there was on the team at that time is why Weeks batted 1 or 2. That he should have been a 5/6 but the team had no one that was getting OB. Now the team does have those 1/2 in order. And now he is batting 5 finally and hopefully drops to 7th/8th. His power is down, question if he'll get to 20 again. I guess part of what always made Weeks acceptible to me was his offensive ability/output and the progression he could have. It outweighed his Defense. But if he's going to barely scrape a .230 avg I seriously have questions whether Gennett deserves a shot. If he's any better defensively. Is it out of the question for Gennett to bat .230? Or higher? but less OB? where does the line cross in defense ability to offensive ability? How many more runs does Weeks score offensively vs. what Gennett would save defensively? Guess what I'm getting to is Weeks had a Negative WAR last season. And he's in negative thus far on the young season. Does Gennett not have the chance to at least approach 0WAR? That's why I come up with the suggestion to platoon the two. You get a see on Gennett not only at the plate but in the field. I don't know, its just the fan in me wanting to see the team well. And last season when the team went to the AS Break due to failure, a lot of it could be looked at the numbers Rickie was posting. And the Bullpen of course. But when you have a leadoff/2nd in order batting .150? That's a problem in my eyes. Here we stand with him at .171. Maybe its the excitement Segura brings. Young blood, a true Spark. And I'm thinking let's try Gennett to see if he can be a spark on top of Segura. I mean aside from SBs....their minor league numbers are close. in the same amount games at this point. So, just putting it out there. -
Segura contract extension...
brewcrewdue80 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Guess what I'm getting to is if Segura's price for a SS projects high at 12mil. Looks around 9-10mil. Savings then become signing him to sorta what PFX's deal is with 7,7.5,8 being the end of his contract. That price to me even up to the 10mil number if we don't do the long term contract for 7s-8. The 7-8mil/ 10mil for that matter come 2020 it's nothing special the club can't do. But, with that the case, then it's complete risk for Milw. Segura becomes injured/loses ability/ becomes a Replacement level player....The team loses on a contract that money-wise between Extreme or not wouldn't break the bank. To me anything of a future projection of 12-15mil/yr for FA years makes the deal a wait and see for me. It's only if we cross that threshold of Segura is a 15mil+ player come time for FA that then makes sense to taking on the risk. What it boils down to is "Good Players at SS aren't making over 10mil" Which makes it hard to see savings on something that already is affordable. -
How much longer should Rickie be given at the 4th spot?
brewcrewdue80 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
For all the hate on my hating. I believe I am the only one to say DFA and Platoon Gennett. Nobody else has gone there. I've just said it differently my hate towards Weeks multiple times in worsening fashions. I don't have a lot of faith in Weeks approaching those Zips projections. It's all about the Ks. He's a .250 career hitter who is striking out more often now than what he's done for his career to be a .250 hitter. I don't know if it's focus. Maybe a hidden injury. But if any chance of either of those two, I see bench time being beneficial. Really, my hate just needs to be focused on RRR for placing Rickie in the top half of the order around two of Baseball's hottest players so that when Rickie gets up, his results look just awful. I'd imagine it like a SP duel where 1 threw a no-hitter through 9 the other threw a perfect game through 9 and it's tied and now the managers go to their bullpen. Segura/Braun set the bar so high, and all I'm thinking about is how amazing some of these innings could be with Weeks playing at least to his career avg vs. .100+ pts below it. -
The Ryan Braun Milestone Thread
brewcrewdue80 replied to splitterpfj's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Love this thread already. I always enjoyed seeing how Brewers players I liked stacked up to all-time numbers. Braun is tied for 282nd All-time in HRs and just projecting out this year he'll be in top 240 if not around top 225 by season's end. That would include passing guys like Rob Deer,Paul Molitor,Ben Oglivie, and approaching/passing Roberto Clemente.
