  1. Every Mock I've read on Gonsalves so far lists him at low 90s FB and with a frame when builds out should be mid 90s. He's 18. Actually, 6months ago he was being mocked in the top 10, and as the Best Lefty in the draft. Your link is the only one I've seen a down side write up for him. Like my original post on Gonsalves, I like the build, the current FB with expected rise in velocity as he matures. Seems to already have control of a Curveball. Give him 4-5years to develop be 23-24 when he reaches around the time all the current Pitchers in our farm are approaching their late Arby-Free Agency. Also, figure pairs well with Lopez in hopes one of those 2 reach their ceilings. Both and it's a big plus for 2017 and beyond! Drafting a College pitcher now just seems like logjam with the current system figuring a 2-4year advance to bigs. This brings the idea of finding a College bat. One I'm good with. But, I'm only looking at the bat when one of the better hitting prospects falls to us unexpectedly. The team did draft 3 hitters last draft as well with their 1st rd picks. The batter they would draft had better be the type who goes through the system under 3years. I think this is the season/draft to reach for a HS SP with a high ceiling. All about pairing ahead with the draft of Lopez. Add another high ceiling HS Pitcher again next season then draft the College Pitchers again and just have a bunch of arms that could all mesh around 2017-2020.
  2. I don't like Gonsalves at all. I am not all that confident in him being all that great. Also it is way to early to predict where guys will be drafted. Just look at last years draft in Roach as he was a safe bet top 10-15 pick but we all saw how that turned out. http://mlbdraftcountdown.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/2013-scouting-report-stephen-gonsalves-lhp-cathedral-catholic-hs-ca/ What's wrong with him with a scouting report like this? Big Frame, Projects in mid-90s FB and an improving Curve ball. Changeup to come. Also, reads has having some pop in his bat, playing CF when not pitching. Reads as athletic to me, so I'm going to assume a higher ceiling with progression. The way the club sits right now I would think either a pitcher from HS or a College bat would be the likely selection. Roache broke his wrist, and thus broke down the initial feeling on if his power remains when healed. Haven't gotten any chance to see how that inury heals and affects him. It's not like cases of Roaches of top 10-15 in predraft rankings suffer injuries to fall down in the order too often. I'm going to assume it doesn't happen until it does. So, yes way early to predict where guys fall but when the top 10-15 show up consistently in mock's over the past 6months, it's likely that doesn't change all too much. There's a reason I only dug down 25spots in assessing what are likely candidates. After 15 or so, the players start interchanging in every mock. Gonsalves wasn't one of them though remaining in the 13-22 draft projections. I'll assume he's real candidate of selection by Milw with his continual draft slot around Milw's.
  3. So, looking the past 5over. Rivera at #1 in 2nd mock and not in top 25 in any of other 4. Guessing to be #1 means he'll be gone as well as: Meadows,Manaea,Frazier,Appel,Stanek,Bryant,Stewart,Wilson,Mercado,Ball, and Moran. That's 12. So names consistently around that could fall or be picked by Milw: Gonsalves, Reese McGuire, Jon Crawford, Wahl, Boldt, Denney, J.P.Crawford to name a few. It seems like the top 15 in general within top 20 picks are regulars then it gets a bit random. So with 17 I'm already thinking the Brewers would take one of those general top 15 who fall to them. Meaning like a Moran/McGuire/Wahl. Crawford and Gonsalves and Mercado for that matter are right on that 14-18picks. Reading up on Boldt on one of the Mocks not the one Brewers are slotted picking him, reads of CF with top of the order bat and a beast on basepaths. Didn't mention how he defends CF. I like what I read on Gonsalves being a 6'5" Lefty. Sounds like a solid pick. McGuire at Catcher doesn't seem to fit the Brewers imo with current makeup.
  4. Here's a mock draft link I found: http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/mlb-mock-draft-central-2013/ Has several mock drafts to look over and gives an idea of the 10-20players who Brewers may select with their pick. You can overlook these players and look in to them more and find the ones you want Milwaukee to select. I've seen McGuire, Mercado,Boldt,Jon Crawford on the recent mocks.
  5. Oh, dang, missed it. I was wondering where that discussion was. Posted this in wrong forum. Can my original post be moved in to the 2013 Draft Prospect thread?
  6. Here's a link I found lists a bunch of Mock Drafts for 2013. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/mlb-mock-draft-central-2013/ Anyway, the latest would have Milwaukee taking a HS OF in Ryan Boldt. I'd doubt that with how they draft recently but either way I would think this can be useful in gauging a 10-20player range of who the Brewers may pick and you can research on them ahead of time opine on who you want them to draft.
  7. I wouldn't worry to much with comparisons I'm sure Gomez was no where near a Raines comparison prior to last year. So Segura will move up the ladder. Others that stand out as what? Gennet being compared to Martin Prado! Braun being compared to Matt Holiday. They couldn't find a better hitter to compare Braun to? At this point imo Braun has already exceeded Holliday. More power, more Sbs much higher BA. Why not Barry Bonds? Unless it's on the LH/RH aspect. Lucroy to Terry Steinbach. That's solid. What stands out to me is that in 96 Steinbach hit 35HRs age 34 season having never hit more than 16. Different thread but theres a case to be made on Steroids improvement there? Then we have Estrada compared to Chris Carpenter. Wow. That's a Cy Young winner we possess! Sign him to a long term deal right? Fiers listed as Cal Eldred...ouch That pretty means Fiers had his run and is only serviceable at best as a pitcher the remainder of his career. Though Eldred did pitch 258 innings his year after that ROY. Which if Fiers can go 33 starts and pitch over 200In. at a 4Era, we'd all take that right now.
  8. Adding, what I think helps Braun's case is Fantasy Baseball. He's a top 5 pick. People all around the US who play Fantasy Baseball know this and he's going to get more votes. There's that added recognition as who the best is due to who you would take in your top 25picks. Trout will be AS for at least the next 7seasons after last year. Whether he deserves it that year or not.
  9. Yeah, I agree on the Balloting. County Stadium? Plenty of games where weather would leave seats empty. I remember going to those games when I was younger looking forward to punching my vote in and never even getting the ballots handed out. So when 12-20k fans are in attendence which is in the lower half and the fans that can vote their team in the AS game aren't even handed a ballot. You're not going to be in the top 3 at your position in votes. Though this still is an issue today as I believe Napoli made the AS this year off the top of my head. Kinda like Harper, undeservedly.
  10. Wow, so Karstens re-signed with Pitt for 1.5mil less (2.5 vs. 4mil)than what he was projected for arby. Like I said, the guy throws some gem games eats innings in them only can't stay healthy year-long. But for him to only get what we paid our new relievers? Man, I hate that he's pitching vs. us rather he us vs. them. To quote Pitt fans, "Our best offseason move. He's better than Liriano." Yeah my thoughts exactly when healthy.
  11. I think a lot of these "Attached stigma to Steroids"' HOF ballot players will be held out for as long as possible awaiting the day the truth is exposed finally by someone else other than Canseco's musings. It took 5 long years to finally expose Armstrong with riders stepping up and confessing the truth. These players may not come forward on their own but others may come out and tell their side. So rather than 1st ballot these 1st ballot HOFs on a stats perspective as well as in their prime being the best in their game, I see the Writers holding out. Some day someone will tell it all on one or more of the Steroid accused. How they did it, with whom they shared doing it with. Maybe it will be 15years down the line or 20 and the majority of these steroids users are passing away, and it's as a long term effect of steroid abuse. Someone will accuse MLB of knowing all of their steroid usage, ignoring it for the sake of the game, but rather than restrict it with the obvious improvements it gave they turned the heads let it go not for once considering the health ramifications and here I lie in my hospital about to die. That's how I see this eventually playing out, should the Steroid use leave a long term effect on their health. It's like all the data coming up on NFL concussions and head injuries. Down the road this will all be exposed either fully or in some way. I am all for the writers leaving these players out for the next 8/9 votes. Seeing how this upcoming decade plays out with the lack of 50HR guys or will the cream accomplish 50HR seasons again. Stanton or Trout could be the players that make the steroid era seem legit if they go for 50+
  12. But do you pay a Relief pitcher top 70 pay in all of baseball to close? That's where the QO would put him. If he's a closer with over 3out closing ability I could justify it but if strictly 3outs or less, again you're basically paying him saying he's the 2nd or 3rd best player in value on your team. Which would be like ranking your team Braun,Gallardo,Soriano. Actually on Brewers he'd be Ramirez,Soriano in pay regards this year. I just think it's a huge overpay where it sets up nightmares in contract negotiating. I'd have to rank my best closer in the 7-10th range in pay or lower on my team, or look elsewhere. He's going to pitch 60-70 innings and yeah under high pressure situations, just can't take on that kind of payroll imo for a closer. You have to be winning games to get to him which requires SP or Hitting and I'd rather put half of what Soriano is looking for towards a solid SP or Hitter.
  13. That is correct also^^ Those are just examples of player seasons with radical HR numbers in the Steroid era. What Ennder stated is steroids didn't make any 15hr guys 40hr guys. I gave a list of players as an example of players who would fall close to that category. Seeing as Sosa/McGuire/Bonds were 30-45HR guys who became 60+HR guys. I do find it rather interesting the guys from Seattle in ARod,Martinez,Buhner,Boone who at one time played with one or another in that era giving you the whole show me how it's done equation of looking at it. Arod to Martinez/Buhner Buhner to Boone(during a season Buhner was hurt(Steroids to recover?) and could mentor Boone through how he did it) In another retrospect Lance Armstrong who's about to concede to using Steroids, historic run with Tour de France began in 1999 right after peak 1998 baseball season. I'm in the golf industry for work and I can tell you there's that rumor behind the scenes of Tiger Woods dominance possibly being helped by Steroids again around Baseball's Steroid era years. And now in the later years Woods' body is continually breaking down which would make a steroid use claim feasible. I don't even know how NFL compares for those years but you're looking at clear head of the class individuals whose performance took off with steroid usage. It all boils down to never knowing what the advantage became in baseball until a study is done with Willing Players taking steroids with MLB willing to allow them to take them. Then taking those results and applying it to a statistical gain standpoint.
  14. Brady Anderson? Richard Hidalgo? Shawn Green? Luis Gonzalez falls in the 20-25HR guy to hit 50+, Jay Buhner 20-25 to 40+,Andres Gallaraga 30 to 40+,Ken Caminiti 32-35yr seasons where he hits 26+ up to 40 in that era his 9th-12th years in the league, Brian Giles didn't hit 40 but hit 35-39 during the era never hitting more than 23 any other season, Jay Bell a 15-20hr to 38 his age 33 year, Matt Stairs had a 38HR season in 99 no other season above 27. Rich Aurilla 37HRs in 2001 no other year above 23. Bret Boone hit 37 in 2001 age 32, 35 in 2003, No other years above 24. So you're right there really arent any players to be turned in to 40HR guys being 15hr guys. And I can't prove any of those players took steroids. But, those are they type of seasons between 1996-2003 where players had some extreme HRs that doesn't fit the rest of their career.
  15. Yes, this is my biggest complaint. A "Riches" team like NY can QO any player they wish and take on the payroll if accepted or lose the player, gain an added draft pick. Meaning NY's Riches come either to their ML team or falls in to their Minor League system.
  16. Yeah Torts I am thinking ahead. One, it makes the suggested moves plausible. Two, if you don't think every GM in Baseball isn't thinking 2years ahead of now, if not beyond, well, now you know they are. It didn't get any reaction but, the NYYankees are fixing their luxury tax situation by 2014 season for a reason. That 2014 FA Pitcher class is going to be whopper if contracts aren't extended. And I expect to see 30-35mil a year contracts handed out by NY to any of the gems that hit FA. So, when Seattle owns a guy like Felix one of those gems who just can't be kept on Seattle's payroll, thinking of how if you are them, how do you set your team up for the final 2years you have of King Felix? What's your weakness? Strengths? How to fix them? When I look at Gallardo's contract situation, I see 2014 and a 2015 option. Felix lasts through 2014. I have 3 of the best arms in my farm system all about to taste playing time in the Bigs. I have two bats in my farm system soon to make an impact. I'll lose one of those pieces for a Gallardo if not two. So, let's dream ahead....Felix,Gallardo, Walker?Hultzen? Paxton? and or Pryor to fill my staff? The lessor of the four prospects in 2013 performance likely the one I ship to Milw. I go for it in 2014. Do I miss? Were my pitchers just not ready for that moment for 2014? Now I lose Felix. But still have Gallardo, and 2015 may be the year those arms reach full potential. My window doesn't close on 2014 because Gallardo is here for 2015. See how that works? The idea to trade for Gallardo, is in the idea that he doesn't just play for Seattle with Felix for a 1year window but a 2nd year with all the remaining top 5 prospects having gotten a full season or two under their belts to repeat a SEA run in 2015. Going to add that with the Yankees luxury tax payroll scrinching these next two seasons, to me, is why Toronto and KC have made their offseason moves. I think it also coincides with Boston deal with LAD in 2012 ruining that teams potential in these two seasons as well. Texas losing Hamilton, Angels losing all those pitchers. You're looking at this window of opportunity where on paper I don't see a surefire Division win by those 4teams. So, make a few drastic moves by two struggling franchises and turn them in to something your city hasn't had in a long while.
  17. You can believe this but it is completely absurd to believe it. Unless you honestly think that only like 5 or 6 guys did steroids in the entire steroid era. No I don't believe only 5 or 6guys did steroids. I don't believe it was over 40% honestly like it's made out as being. I mean seriously if every 15 HR guy turned into a 40 HR guy because of steroids we'd have seen 10k plus HR in that era. Well, let's think of what may separate a 10-15hr guy to a 30-40HR guy. How about their workout routines? These guys have power through using the gym lifting, whereas a 10-15hr guy while he may use the gym it's not as likely to be with lifting weights but cardio and maintenance. Some people can handle spending 2-4hours a day in the gym or more 5-7days a week. Others, may be a 1-3hour type 5-7days a week. Then you have your types who may only hit the gym 1-3 times a week. Those types are the ones that yes can use steroids but aren't getting the added effect due to the infrequent use. That is my logic on why the said number of steroid users were the majority vs. minority. Yes, players tried out steroids may even used it for a month or two being just a month or two only, are they not steroid users since it wasn't throughout the season or months at a time? I also believe that taking a guy who is in that 1-3times a week going to gym for 1-3hours and then putting himself on a strict regime with steroids while at the gym for 2-4hours+ and being there 5-7days a week, are the ones who become the 15hr guys to 30+ like Gonzalez or Anderson having those 1 outlier type years. When you frequent the gym it shows, but when you slack off in it your gains diminish rather quickly. So, taking steroids without a seriousness of putting in the gym time to reap the rewards results in a lack show in the stats and thus why there's not 10,000HRs hit those years as you point out.
  18. From what I know following health forums/ men's fitness magazines and such: Steroids help you perform longer in the gym. You are getting more from a workout than you would be able to without steroids. This added gym time results in the added muscles both slow and fast twitch. This makes the player perform better. So, yes, I do have honest belief that steroids makes a 15-20hr guy become 40hrs. a 35-40hr guy become 50+. Without using steroids they wouldn't be able to take their body to the levels they took them as rather than bench 200 6-8times they suddenly are benching 250 12-15 reps! A year later, they are benching 300 15-20 reps. It's known that low reps are designed to build the slow twitch. but when you take it beyond 12 and approach 20reps you are starting off using the fast twitch muscles. In my example benching 200 6-8times wouldn't have an impact on fast twitch. When you take the higher weight 250-300 and you're 12+reps not only are they engaging their fast twist muscle fibers they are doing them at a 25-50% increase in strength on the slow twitch muscles alone but its the fast twitch they are improving. And I get it on well they all were doing steroids so those guys were the best of their era. That's Bull! They all weren't doing steroids. Even if it was 40-60% that were that's 40-60% who were playing at a big disadvantage. Add to it just after the expansions there're going to be quite a few AAA pitchers pitching vs. these suped up All-Stars. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/home-run-rates-in-1998-and-2012/ Recent article. Argues how the HR Rate has stayed the same. But if 17% K rate then to 20%K rate now. And the HR % has declined steadily over the last 6years in 3year spans. To me, suggests that A, even with both sides using steroids that hitters gained more from steroid use and B that Steroids did in fact make hitter bat speed improved to avoid striking out as often. How about 9straight seasons over 5,000HRs while only 1 in past 6 went over 5,000? Or as someone else in the comments mentioned why were there 13players to hit over 50HRs between 1997-2001 and we've only had 1 hit over 50 since 2008 even though 2012 had a rise in HR Rate % near those seasons but none to exceed 50. Take it as you will. I've haven't used steroids in the gym, but have used a Creatine product that clearly states wouldn't meet drug testing regulations in sports. I feel a buzz effect within minutes if ingestion and when lifting the ability to handle more weight/reps than in my previous history lifting. So who knows when steroids were being applied? Was it at game time? or just for use in the gym? But after my creatine experience I absolutely know that products like it and or steroids can boost performance immediately.
  19. With whom the Brewers have, the Mariners have no need for Gomez, and they don't need Lucroy. They have the best Catching prospect in Zunino who will be up any time the Mariners decide to start his clock. The only player I've seen fit for them is Hart and or Gallardo. And when it comes to acquiring Hernandez, it would take Braun on the offer. No other Brewers player can start the trade conversation for Felix. Lucroy and Segura may have started a conversation under different circumstances, but Zunino and Franklin are both higher ceiling prospects than Lucroy and Segura and that's the positions Lucroy and Segura happen to play at. If Weeks had 3years of a more efficient contract than he'd be in the mix for a trade (with others) that could acquire Hernandez. If Weeks had 3 years of a more efficient contract he wouldn't be part of any trades by the Brewers though. Anyway, Mariners lost out on Upton, and the offer was one of the big three, Franklin,Pryor and Charlie Furbush. Hart imo isn't worth one of the big 3, Furbush not a need by Milwaukee and that leaves Franklin and or Pryor. Both? for Hart? I think Jack Z got lucky Upton invoked his no trade clause as losing one of those big three and Franklin really had to hurt Seattle's future.
  20. Why bother writing a 2016 lineup projection? Weeks,Hart,Gomez,Gallardo, and Axford all could be gone by then. And realistically only Gallardo will remain out of that 4. Why not just put TBD/Area of need? Now with all the hate on Gennett. Yet the guy was ranked as best hitter for avg. I'll take that at 2b. Either way we look at it, the last 2 drafts have at least given us something to talk about. I am looking forward to Coulter more and more. Given 4years to develop he'll be 21-22 by the time he's called up on to the team. And if it's to play 3b as some suggest, nothing wrong with that. And Gagnon, if he has the best control, I see him as a SP on the team by 2016. Oddly enough between Jungmann,Thornburg, and Lopez he may turn out the best pitcher drafted in 2011. Not in skill, but in results. Edit Add:Lookimg at Baseball reference, there may be something to Gagnon than let on as he was a 10th rd pick out of HS while Jungmann was a 24th rd pick in the same draft. This in the reasoning that Jungmann's Ceiling rose to be a 1st rd pick while Gagnon probably lost value in not being a flamethrower but was a 3rd rd pick nonetheless. Just suggesting that Gagnon could turn out better than profiled due to his control.
  21. So, JUpton invoked his no-trade to Seattle. Supposedly, Franklin,Pryor,Charlie Furbush, and One of the Big 3 Arms in Walker,Hultzen, or Paxton. In the whole a team makes room for Upton not a Hart. Now you see what kind of Room would be made for an Upton. To add to this, Red Sox looking in to 1bmen and talked with Seattle on Justin Smoak. On the homefront a Smoak deal to Bos leaves a better reasoning for Seattle to seek an OF/1b like Hart. And of course this is all again on the assumption of not just 1year of him but to extend him. I would be left to think only one of either Franklin or Pryor for Hart could be had after the trade offer for Upton. And I'd be thrilled to land Franklin for SS move Segura to 2nd in the future.
  22. Using the past drug use of cocaine and amphetamines of members who made the HOF to justify putting steroid users in seems silly to me. How much faster or stronger a player did those two drugs make them versus the overwhelming stat improvement of a steroids user? We were looking at .500slg guys slugging .800+ for 3/4years. And that 5thyear? Or 6th year? It was just total breakdown. But the historic numbers had been put up. Seasons for The ages were accomplished. Where were these seasons by the cocaine and amphetamine users? Steroids didn't just beat the record, it absolutely blew them away! Let's use Melky Cabrera as an example to watch this season. The year he has vs the years before and then the year caught using steroids. From a stat stand point per 162games just how much % wise he exceeds his norm with steroids. Maybe MLB should allow a team 1player with 4years experience minimum to use steroids. And the gain they all get from using steroids vs the seasons w/o. Run this over a 6year period with each team's player chosen doing two years of use. After 6years MLB would have 90players with 2years stats on steroids to compare to their normal non steroids use years. They come up with a % result say 50% increase in HRs, 30%increase in BA and such and can apply that finding to the players in the steroids era and deem then if their numbers are still HOF worthy. Edit: Adding: If this happened today I would go Gallardo the 1st two years, Lucroy the 2, and Segura the final 2. Braun just wouldn't be able to participate with his alleged steroid use already. But finding out what a 200in/200k pitcher does followed by a 10ish HR hitting Catcher who bats around .300, followed by Segura who I've read projects to becoming a 10-15hr guy. Reaching his prime years does he go from 7-10 to suddenly 26/35 and then back down to 10 afterwards. This to me is what would need to be done by MLB at some point to see under the microscope what a Steroid using ballplayer's advantage really is. Even if it happens 20years from now the findings could make it where the HOF vote is reopened for these players who are likely to be left off and never make it.
  23. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/teams-could-seek-loopholes-for-compensation-free-agents.html Here's the mention on MLBTR I had seen on not being able to sign and trade. And it is what would be considered collusion.
  24. I read on MLBTR the same day they mentioned the Olney story a few posts later a story saying that that scenario isn't allowed. So no, no sign and trades to avoid loss of 1st rd pick. Besides, if it were me, I'd screw the team over saying I wanted Lohse, I'll let you have so and so and then upon Lohse signing with the Indians in this case I'd not answer my phone anymore and leave them holding on to a sad, aging, pitcher for Multimillions of their payroll and laugh that they lost another pick.
  25. Seems to have missed my crystal ball projections. It's not the Brewers trading for Felix. Its the Mariners trading for Gallardo. A go allin year from Seattle before seeing Felix depart. At this moment in time I just don't see the Brewers trading For a stud player. They need to trade away their stud players with upcoming ending contracts. Looking ahead to a Capable group of 3s and 4s rotation and sending away Gallardo for 2014 or mid season 2014. I was just coinciding that with Seattle's window of owning Felix coming to an end and making a move for another ace with an expiring contract. I just think there's a high chance the team pushes to get in the playoffs in 2014 to send off their Fans and Felix making a Postseason appearance. For what Felix has pitched for them, it would be a shame to never have made the playoffs with him as your anchor. Obviously, one of the biggest culprits was Choke Figgins being an absolute bust overpaid, nobody for them. And I believe Chone is having an impact on Bourne being signed. Reading any Seattle comments from their fans and it's a big, been there done that, do we really need to sign another Chone and lose a draft pick? Anyway, my next crystal ball sight is if both Verlander and Hernandez get to test FA, the Yankees will sign them both. That is the real reason why they are shedding payroll is preparing to have a near 300mil payroll with the likes of Sabathia,Verlander,Felix pitching for them in 2015.
