  1. i know the grand branyan definitely had this (ram) jam during his first go round with the crew. mainly just wanted to post the video though...
  2. which gm's in the league consistently DO put together a good bullpen, though? it's by far the area of any team which is bound to have the most variance in performance year to year as you're dealing with guys who, even if they're in the upper tier, get 70 innings a year.
  3. i've always been curious, am i to assume that an international harvester is someone who harvests in multiple countries? if that's the case, i can see why so many people relate.
  4. it's kind of telling that the silver lining thread has 15 pages and the vent thread is at 59...
  5. I thought Inman was dominant in AA last year. he was pretty dominant in a+, but had a 4.80 era between the brewers and padres aa teams. i seem to recall from the game logs that he had a rough start in huntsville and then put together a string of encouraging starts right before the trade. it seems the two transactions that are most often held to melvin's detriment are the linebrink trade and the gagne signing. in both cases he rolled the dice, and in both cases with good reason. i'm still not convinced anyone we gave up in the linebrink deal will ever be more than a back of the rotation starter in the bigs and if that does come to fruition i have a feeling petco could be a big reason why. as for gagne, it hasn't worked out the best obviously, but i'll take him for one year (plus odorizzi and lintz if i'm figuring right) instead of coco for four.
  6. corey hart will get ryan braun money this offseason, but only for four years.
  7. melvin himself has said that if any move is made it will be a quantity move and most likely for a number two or three type starter. gamel/laporta aren't going anywhere (not even to nashville) this season. i wouldn't trade either of them for a half season of any pitcher, anyhow. not even pedro or koufax in their primes. if we were to go after cc the most i could see us giving up is something along the lines of hall/bush/gillespie/nelson. anything more than that, no deal.
  8. maybe something along these lines... sheets/hall to lad kershaw/broxton/laroche to mil maybe we could even get them to throw in andruw jones.
  9. how about that time he traded a speedy outfielder who is currently a backup for that one who just signed a 100 million dollar contract. scotty p has a career ops/+ of .712/85 carlos lee's are .841/115. right before carlos lee signed that contract we traded him. (boo to him! he took 52 million more to play for someone else!) i think we got back cordero. who closed out a few games for us and then signed a pretty lucrative contract himself. if garrison or inman ever have lasting success at the major league level i'll be very interested to see their home/road splits. the linebrink trade still is exactly what it was then. a gamble for a shot at the postseason. did it work out? not exactly. the only problem i have with it is i think inman could have netted us more than a late inning guy but at that point he had only been at aa a short time and struggled in his first couple outings so maybe that perception is off.
  10. i don't know how many here check out depodesta's blog at all but he posted recently about the daddy's aa rotation and thus had some comments on both will and steve that were pretty interesting. he was all like, "i can't believe we fleeced that loony canadian melvin soooooo bad..."
  11. if he is psyching himself out when hitting leadoff then what's the problem for his other three of four plate appearances each game? i'm definitely a big weeks fan. he has the tools to be the best hitter on this team. the problem is everybody puts it together at their own pace. and for every high pick that clicks instantly (braun) there's one that doesn't put it together until later in their career, or in some cases ever at all. i'll take a struggling weeks who is still in the top half of nl second basemen in ops. by the end of the year he might only be behind utley, uggla, phillips anyway.
  12. i sure hope he doesn't start, he normally has the most trouble with the first inning. ta-da!
  13. the old lefty/lefty platoon. with all ned's thinking outside of the box this year he might just go or it...
  14. two picks until the next brewers' pick and we've still got shooter hunt, casey kelley, zach collier, tim melville, conor gillaspie and jake odorizzi (among others, obviously) on the board. i'm hoping melville or hunt, myself. then hopefully weatherford a little later on...
  15. frank thomas roiding but not joey belle? interesting there... if i had to take five of these guys i'd go with hornsby, joe d, mays, aaron and robinson. a rod, manny and pujols could easily knock some of those guys out of the top 5 by the time their careers are over, though.
  16. Samples generally become pretty reliable after about two to three full seasons...
  17. i'll be at friday's game. outfield grandstand nine, row one. i'll be sleeping on the greyhound four wheels inn. only 33$ for the night and when i wake up i'll be in new york for the yankees/mets game.
  18. sorry, i couldn't resist, there's just not many forums where you can use jeffress as a verb and people will know what you're talking about.........
  19. i went to the brewers/cardinals doubleheader/meltdownFIASCO last year and though i don't remember what the "listed" times were, the stadium was definitely cleared between games. it was nice, though, as it provided a chance to walk around by the arch and get my jeffress on before the second game. plus we ate at a place called show 'ems which was kind of a junior varsity hooters type establishment. our waitress was the only attractive one in the place and she had on one of those ankle bracelets that parolees are sometimes required to wear. CLASSY. tickets were required for each game individually, also.
  20. i finally ponied up for a 20 game package this year (fan's choice, terrace box) and we ended up with first row seats for 7 (including the last two against the cubs!) of the 20 games and only 3 of the games are we farther back than row 3. i actually like that the seats are in different sections as i think it'll be nice to catch some different views throughout the year.
  21. don't spill the "secret", al.
  22. i think the reason it seems so absurd to most "everypeople" is that this 40,000 bucks or whatever they're getting is on top of their normal salary and is essentially a bonus to go to japan in order to do work they would have had to do either way. now for me, as someone who hasn't made 40 grand total in the last THREE years and would love to go to japan i can see why most proletariat fans would see this as ridiculous. you have a bunch of millionaires protesting that a handful of hundred thousandaires aren't getting even more money than they already have to go do their job in a beautiful foreign country that many much poorer than themselves gladly PAY to go to and NOT work. at the same time, oh weird a bunch of rich people who want even more money???? and in sports to boot????
  23. i believe infielders are taught to field routine balls on the glove side of the body as opposed to right down the middle of their body. not sure what the reasoning is behind this exactly, but i believe it's "standard baseball wisdom" or whatever...
  24. berkman's 278/386/510 represented career lows in all three categories. a barely sub 900 ops is nothing to sniff at, but going forward i expect numbers more in line with that than with what he's done in his career prior. i'd go pence/berkman/lee/tejada from two through five, myself. but i guess if one were to do that then they couldn't hit kaz matsui second and he is afterall the perfect two hitter.
  25. i think the funniest part about the article is the mention that lee/pence are slated to hit 5 and 6 this year. i know batting order doesn't really matter all that much, but still, pretty interesting slotting the two best hitters on the team there. and yes, i know an argument could be made for berkman/tejada, but i don't see berkman bouncing back too much from his terrible oh seven and miggy definitely appears to be headed the wrong way too.
