  1. Scoop really is a Pre-Cog. Doggone that's wierd.
  2. Mark Rogers, age 19 at start of season Yovani Gallardo, 19 Josh Wahpepah, 20 Robbie Wooley, 20 Josh Baker, 22 So I think this is my preliminary choice of most exciting 5-man rotation in the system this year. Sure, Hendrickson and Capellan is cool, and Parra / Eveland make a great pair of AA lefties...but 1 through 5 these guys are intriguing to outright exciting...and young to boot.
  3. I have two different DOB for Gallardo, but both have him 19 when the season starts. But you can't trust ages from a place like Texas....he could be 15 or 40!
  4. In '98, he signed as the 5th overall pick by the Cardinals for a $7 million bonus, down from the $11 million he demanded from the Phillies. I think you're making the wrong comparison. He got less than he asked for, but you know he got more than the Phillies offered. They were talking about Kris Benson money...Benson got $2M as the #1 overall choice in '96. Matt Anderson, #1 in '97, went down to the wire and got $2.5M...and the Phils were having nothing to do with the talk of eight figures. OTOH, Boras was trying to bust the draft, and had done so the previous year with the infamous 'loophole' free agents. When Drew returned to the '97 draft, he did so knowing full well that the cards were sitting at #5, with the Phils (who could not redraft without permission), two small-market teams (Oakland and KC), and the Cubs ahead of them. Boras had done a successful deal with the Cards the previous year for Ankiel ($2.5M, a record for a 2nd round pick at the time). As it turned out, Drew signed quickly...there was an agreement in place sure as shooting. On the other hand, Oakland and KC had tough negotiations, with Mulder demanding (but ultimately not getting) a major league deal, and KC's choice Jeff Austin holding out over 6 months. Similarly, you have to believe that Weaver would sign now or even shortly before the draft if he (or Boras) thought he would not get more than the $4M or whatever that the Angels had in their final offer. He won't get Prior money, which is what he initally asked for, but the odds are good that he'll get more than what's on the table now....or that there will be a sudden breakthrough in negotiations.
  5. would it be possible to throw up another forum like "Major League II" I'm not sure it would be worth doing without Charlie Sheen. Not that that's ever stopped Hollywood.
  6. Drew...A deal for under slot-money at 5 may be workable ... Jered Weaver is even more likely to be available with the Brewers pick. Wade Townsend will be there as well, but I'd rather not get a guy that most scouts project as a reliever. ...these players carry more risk (as none of them are playing for their old teams, AFAIK), and could sign at a discount. Um, if these guys were willing to sign at a discount, why would they re-enter the draft? Their apparent lack of leverage is more than compensated for by their agents' willingness to engage in brinkmanship and lengthy holdouts...Weaver and Drew left millions on the table with the expectation of getting more, not less...
  7. could turn into Mike Matheny pretty quickly Aaaaaah! Run away! Got your sights set high for the #5 overall pick, eh? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Mark Johnson traded - I bet that's because some of these other catchers have been doing pretty well (Vanden Berg, Rottino, etc.) Right. We had to clear that backup AAA spot for the oncoming freight train of catching prospects...
  9. I'd love to see a Sheets/Davis/Capuano/Hendrickson/JDLR rotation by the end of the year. That's entirely possible and would be consistent with the team limping to 70 wins. Is that as opposed to the 72-win Sheets / Davis / Santos / Capuano / Glover juggernaut?
  10. I'd say that's optimism. To me right now he seems more lost than Ankiel, not to mention a lot less good before he got lost. But it's still not hard to imagine him reinvented as a hard-throwing lefty reliever...so it's worth a shot I guess.
  11. Are you advocating taking Teagarden at #5? That seems like a reach to me, especially if Clement is on the board. For all that the Brewers have done pretty well not drafting for need, it sure seems like there's some good talent, near major league ready, at 3B and C that will be available at #5, and some money to spend to sign a premium guy, given that we have no second rounder.
  12. Didn't I read somewhere speculation that the Brewers would take Zimmerman? Maybe in the 2008 wild card preview. Hard to know what to make of that...I guess he's got the D to stick at 3b, but does he have enough power?
  13. Cirillo will regain the fountainhead of above-average-youth (all data to the contrary). Objectivism vs. Reality? Ha. I spotted the secret Ayn Rand code words here. You're not really talking about the 25th man, are you?
  14. MOST stats are very decieving IMO In your opinion, is it 55% that are very 'decieving' or is it more like 75%?
  15. Aside from his 18 Milwaukee innings, Gary Glover has never been a league-average pitcher in the majors. Before joining Milwaukee, Doug Davis had three years (>340 IP) of approximately league-average performance, though it was sometimes hard to tell since he was pitching in Texas.
  16. I agree with colby that I would never wish for a player to get hurt. Perhaps Boras could sustain a career-ending injury, though? A severe tear of his lateral checkbook or something?
  17. In the latest BA I saw that Cal catcher Garrett Bussiere hit a homer of Steve Kahn...who did not allow a single dinger in 2004. It's a moment that must have made Jack Z proud, or sad, or something....
  18. I hate to say I told you so but..... Yeah, like clancy hates position changes.
  19. Guys like Heether and Festa are nice depth both have some useful tools and performance to indicate they could turn into useful players. Seriously Heether isn't that much worse of a prospect than Helms was in my mind, and he gets some points for actually having a glove. Heether was 22 this past year in the Midwest League. Festa turned 24 this December...so he was 23 in the Pioneer League. The much-maligned Wes Helms at age 22 had a pretty decent full season of AAA ball, and even a few major league at bats. He missed a good part of the following season (age 23/1999) with shoulder injuries, but came back to hit .301 in a 30-game trial in the Southern League. So whatever you think of Helms, at the same age he was way, way ahead of where Heether and Festa are now. Which is to say, let's not get too excited about either guy just yet...
  20. I assume they mean Nashville...get your Winchester jerseys now! Milwaukee: Signed pitcher Kane Davis, catchers Kelley Gulledge and Jeff Winchester and infielder Tony Zuniga and assigned them to Indianapolis of the International League (AAA)
  21. Get a Cub pitcher. Hagerty, for example, but there are other choices.
  22. So Peavey, the reigning magic 8 ball of bf.net, says: -I'm getting mixed feelings about tomorrow's game... will have to wait and see how it looks tomorrow 'Ask again later'?
  23. I would assume that Ben, being the class act that he seems to be, will just do his job and let the rest of us worry about the promotions...from what I can see from a distance, he doesn't seem the type to lobby the GM. Or, to look at it another way, he's sending a message with every one of those AAA starts.... Anyway, Melvin can hardly have failed to notice what he's doing...and I can't imagine that Wes Obermueller will have a lot more shots as the 5th starter in Milwaukee. The All-Star break is a natural time to make a move...
  24. The latest ASK BA might as well be a brewerfan.net message board post: www.baseballamerica.com/t...askba.html
  25. Looks to me like the Twins will have done a nice job in the draft, then...they picked good talent with their picks, and some wondered if they could sign it all. Waldrop and Plouffe is a heckuva start...it might be that Plouffe immediately becomes their top middle infield prospect.
