2019 Green Bay Packers Draft Picks and Discussion

Got an Uber athletic CB with great size (6’0 200) in Ka'dar Hollman of Toledo. Interesting story & earned his way here. Something to work with for sure. -

This pick is a bit of a head scratcher. We're pretty well set on the DL right now. I guess it's a given that Wilkerson isn't coming back, but sitll, we've got depth there. We don't have much at ILB and Mack Wilson was available and we have one solid starter at CB right now by my count. At least one that we can count on. But...whatever.....we'll see. I'm just going off position at this point. Think it depends on how high you are on our DL depth. I personally don’t like it much at all. We have two really good ones in Daniels & Clark. Lowry has been productive but then....Adams still hasn’t done much, Lancaster is more just a big body. Fabol Brown & Looney are also there. To me, I don’t feel great about group. Keke, Adams, Looney really need to offer something behind our starters. -

Exploded this year after dropping 20 lbs to play DE. Had played closer to 305-310 prior to this season as DT. Good depth. All reports I’ve read have his biggest knock as not being quick/explosive off the ball but is a solid player who is again versatile. Intriguing player with a cool name. Fills another hole where we needed depth. -

Two main things for Day 2: Jenkins I think is great fit, more so due to the signing of Billy Turner. To start he can cover as main backup for all three interior spots. Madison is back so we will see how he does but versatility & athletic ability are huge in Lafleur’s zone scheme. Jenkins would only be an emergency RT. Billy Turner is the natural fit at RT when they finally move on from from Bulaga. Moreover, Jenkins was a great pass blocker in college. Don’t think he starts right away but still an upgrade over what we put out there at guard last year. Sternberger was my favorite TE outside of Iowa boys. Elite athlete, no. Elite blocker, no. But kid is a player & competes. Playing at A&M hurt his ability to develop has a blocker. He simply was not asked to be in-line. He doesn’t need to play day 1 & be polished so he has time to learn how to block. He could be really good when he replaces Graham in 2020. Take upside & coach them up. Find ways for them to excel in scheme. Hope they don’t turn out like Spraggs who gets manhandled like a child on a football field -

Also love when fans pretend to know what other teams draft boards are. Up to last month, Gary didn’t look like he would make it past top 10. People can say dumb things like mocks had him here or there. Well mocks also had Haskins top 5, Lock maybe going to Packers at 12. DK as top 15 pick.... all those lineman like Taylor who are mocked in top 10. Mocks are simply guesses based on rumors & smoke screens put out by teams. Loved Wilkins but not enough for me to not see massive upside of Gary. If you are high on a guy and board said he fits value of that pick.... it’s not a reach. If a guy had been mocked as a top 10 pick in loaded DL/Edge class for past year (besides last month) how is it a reach or a move we could have traded down for? Same train of thought. For fans to say Savage would have been there at 30 & we reached with trade to get him... how do you know. Gute said he heard rumblings he was going soon & he was a guy they really wanted. They spend all year studying every detail of every player. They have more sources to know what teams like what guys. Packers saw a guy who could be a Collins like FS. Turns out or busts you have to trust your scouts & board. -

Two major ways I disagree with everything posted above- first, you're assuming that your own draft board matches with the other teams behind the Packers. If they wanted Gary and had reason to believe that another team wanted him, your trade-back scenario plays out in speculation only. As for another option, without knowing the Packers' board, it's very possible if not likely that they had Gary ranked enough ahead of the next tier of guys like Burns/Sweat/etc. that they didn't value the trade down there as much as you did. Second, that PFF article is weak. They rank him vs. the other Edge guys in the draft based on his pass rushing stats, while failing to acknowledge that he DIDN'T ACTUALLY PLAY EDGE in college. Maybe, just maybe, Winovich's numbers as an Edge are better since he actually played Edge? It's the equivalent of defending a thesis that Sean Jones was a better defensive end for the Packers than Santana Dotson was. Well, no crap. Only one of them actually played defensive end. Love when people actually get it! There was a reason he was still 1st team All Big 10 2 straight years despite stats people go crazy for. He excelled at what he was asked to do. He wasn’t asked to play on edge & go get the passer nearly as much. With Hurst Jr gone this year... Gray was the main focus and schemed against. He was a strong side DE most often or kicked inside. Big 10 also is not the SEC. It has big lineman, strong TEs, and a lot of power. Outside of Ohio St. that is just the brand of football. Penn St, Michigan St, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc all are in line power base teams. Gary’s job was to set edge & beat up the OT/TE double teams. Passing downs, he moved around inside & outside. Chase Winovich was weakside Edge whose job was to win 1 on 1 weakside pass rush battle. No slide protections. TE goes out, Gary still had OT and backs to deal with. Sweat & Burns play in open offense conferences that throw at Will & don’t utilize TEs way big 10 does. They are able to just put hand down and go. From Michigan’s DC -

We got two guys I mentioned a good amount leading up to draft in Gray & Steinberger! I had to reserve myself from commenting on twitter to people. There is so much unwarranted Gary hate. Idiots that no nothing about football beside basic stats such as sacks. Kid is only guy at 278 to run a sub 4.6 in combine history. 40 in vert, 26 reps, and really just a freak athlete. That alone should peak interest. Michigan failed to put him in positions for him to individually succeed. Played him out of position, he got doubled nearly every play. Yet, he played great! Numbers weren’t there but he at gap, strung out runs. Pushed line of scrimmage, and was major force for that defense. Same people hating him should really hate on Clark which no sane Packer fan would do. Up to this past year, his numbers didn’t jump off page but he was excellent for us inside. Did all the little things that matter. Martinez like Devin Bush, owe a lot of their performance for the work those two did to eat blockers & let them run free. Will Gary be a star... I don’t know but think Pettine will find ways to use him in roles he can excel at. We brought in an excellent OLB coach who can work with him. He doesn’t have pressure on him to produce & carry OLBs. With the Smith’s he has chance to learn and rotate to start career. Just think all these fans hating the pick because of sack totals is redic. Kid can play & is freakish. Savage appears to be great fit to go with Amos! Tramon Williams also gives Savage chance to rotate at FS but also play a lot of slot as well. He has that Collins like Centerfield speed, closing ability, and ballhawk mentality. Not polished but plenty of positives to be excited for. Then in 2nd we go get a versatile, athlete OL who fits Lafleurs zone system great! He can backup all three of Taylor, Lindsey, and Turner. Once Bulaga gets injuried (we know it’s coming) Turner can kick out to RT & Eltgen can slide in at RG Love Steinberger! Has been my top TE outside of the Iowa duo for months now! He has chance to be a good one! Be nice to trade back into 4th to fill few more holes such as DL. At this point, seems like Packers May ride out this WR group. Value you get in 5-7 isn’t going to upgrade position really. St. Brown, MVS, and Kumerow flashed. Moore has a lot of talent. Hopefully he takes jump. -
It’s hard to find comparison for what he is doing right now & just his pure dominance since last all-star break! Cross sports, this is on of the best a players have been. Almost like ARod in Packers Super Bowl run through 15-1 regular season where defenses didn’t stand a chance. January 25th is arguably one of the biggest days in Brewer history! Because Yelich has been so good, many overlook what Cain has done as well! To get both those guys in the same day has changed this franchise!

When Will Keston Hiura Arrive In Milwaukee?
Jenkins5 replied to RollieTime's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I have zero interest in Hiura coming up until he gets back to his normal self. He’s never been a huge walk guy (7%ish) but he hasn’t been walking at all so far. Traditionally he’s a strong & professional contact hitter but so far he is giving Ray a run for his money on who can set a strikeout record. It is early and I assume he is selling out for power but until he can prove he can make good contact in AAA.... he shouldn’t be called up. There are 3 other guys there who I call up before him right now in that infield. I’d like to stress I am a Hiura fan & I do not think contact will be an issue in future. However, he needs to get swing right before he can even stand chance to help us. You don’t go from K’ing 40%+ in AAA to getting called up & turning it around. Pitchers are much tougher at this level. Not place to be in order to work on swing. -
I think same as last year, you can’t really grade until June. With age & aggression with promotions, he takes time to adjust. Like in Wisconsin month 1 &2 were not pretty then come June he clicked. A lot of talent there! One of my favorites!

Since spring Lazar has been K machine!
-
Huira another bomb but man... Ks are piling up for him! Entering game 2% bb 43% k with 2 more tonight so far. For a guy who hasn’t k’d more than 20% in a season or a stop... wondering if he solely selling out for power? He should be far to advanced a hitter to be making that poor of contact. Good thing we have Moose. I don’t care if average is high & hitting bombs if you aren’t able to but ball in play at that rate. Super early in season & small sample as of today if injuries struck... probably 3-4 OFs I call up before him until he cuts that down

2019 Green Bay Packers draft preview and predictions
Jenkins5 replied to LouisEly's topic in Other Sports
Wolf in the 90s was smartest GM. Pick late round QB every year, groom them and see if they become anything. 4 of their 7 went on to have very nice careers & started a lot of games elsewhere. 1992 Ty Detmar 9th round 1993 Mark Brunell 5th round 1995 Jay Barker 5th round 1996 Kyle Wachholtz 7th round 1997 Ronnie Mcada 7th round 1998 Matt Hasselback 6th round 1999 Aaron Brooks 4th round Stumped me that a guy groomed by Wolf never took similar actions in TT. If any turn into solid backups who look like they can start, that trade capital. I’m high on Boyle. Kid just has just a talented arm. Learning under Aaron & figuring out how to be more than just an arm talent is big for him. Hundley never had the arm & just timid with ball. Don’t think he had very high Football IQ & struggled reading defenses. Think there are some solid developmental guys to look at in draft for day 3. Don’t think Jackson or Greer make it but those are guys I’d take in 4th if there. Thornton has everything you want in QB but has just never fully clicked. At one point people that he could be future #1 with Luck type pro style ability. Never made it over hump & shined. Minshew is a guy I’d love! May never be full time starter but he has Moxy poise, and little gunslinger in him. A more athletic & stronger armed Flynn type guy. Shumur has size, arm, and IQ. From football family & dad head coach in New York. Stick, Finley, Stidham all have tools that can be developed. McSorley is just a competitor who is worth a late flyer to see if he can actually be a NFL QB. Fails, maybe you can get him passed I’m only QB ego & throw him in slot like Edelman or some teams wanted him to play S -
Link Report for Friday 4/12 - Rattlers in Miller Park!
Jenkins5 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Nice Scout report on Rasmussen from ST “Drew Rasmussen (RHP) – Former first round pick, drafted by Rays in 2017 who did not sign him after seeing the MRI of his elbow; he ultimately had a second TJ surgery in September of 2017. The Brewers took him in the sixth in 2018 and Rasmussen missed the entire 2018 season. Rasmussen has fairly thick legs and a strong frame. He is a flamethrower who sat 95-98 and touched 99. The fastball is relatively straight and was not well-commanded in this outing; he served up a couple of fat ones. Still, touching 99 is a skill few guys have. Flashed a SL 88-90 with an inconsistent shape, was more cuttery at times and at other times more like a traditional slider with quality tilt. Thought he had decent deception, striding forward with his back to the hitter. At times over-rotated and missed glove side. Overall he flashed two plus pitches but looked rusty. Not hard to see him as a high-leverage weapon out of the pen.” -
Houser I think has fixed himself above Wilkerson in pecking order but sure we will see him at some point. At his age when you get chances you need to shine. He hasn’t in limited opportunities & has done nothing to break AAAA stereotype. He could be serviceable and good depth but don’t think he will ever be in rotation. Upside just not there.

Burnes HR/FB ratio dropped from 75% to 64%!! Still a lot of HRs but not as many flyballs are going over!

Wow, didn't look at the schedule until today
Jenkins5 replied to obobo55new's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
April & May are brutal for Brewers so if they can stay hot & survive those 2 months they will be in great shape. I think June & July should be relatively “easy” months. Hard to tell where those teams will be by then but on paper as of today, that should be period to really make head way. August gets difficult again and September you see Cubs 5x & Cards 3 more times. Houston for 2 and Rockies 3 to finish year. -
Is it just me or are innings extremely overrated for RPs? Isn’t pitch count what should matter most? What’s really the difference between a pitcher coming in for 1 inning & throwing 35 pitches as compared to a guy going out & throwing 35 pitches in 3 innings? Was Wilson’s 1 inning (0.2 IP really) any different than Hader going 3 with same amount of pitches? I had a debate with a buddy who is a Cub fan who claimed Brewers are going to burn out Hader’s arm & guaranteed that he’d be injured by mid season. I completely disagreed with that. Brewers have strict schedule for him & amount of pitches matter more on the arm than innings.
-
That's quite extreme. And it's also why I'm not worried about him. Among the 76 starters with 10 IP that makes him 3rd in xFIP, just ahead of Scherzer and Cole. A 75% HR/FB rate is not sustainable to say the least; last year the highest among qualified starters was 18%. Burnes has a HR/9 of 5.40. In 2018, the highest was 2.15, and even that was quite a bit ahead of the 2nd highest at 1.67. I also wouldn't think a BABIP of .333 is likely to continue. What we're seeing early this season is a small sample of a notoriously noisy stat. K/BB numbers stabilize a lot sooner, and are much, much better indicators of future run prevention than ERA, HR rate or almost anything else. I know what I'll trust going forward. Best Burnes post I’ve read. Refreshing after reading through Twitter. So many fans are so irrational it’s crazy. 2 starts in & people calling for his head. It’s rediculous. Burnes will be more than fine. He isnt going to have 3 out of every 4 fly balls go over the fence all season. If he is the horrible HR prone pitcher so many twitter trolls are screaming about... that number will still drop substantially to 1 in every 5 flyballs. I choose to focus on the 18ks in 10 innings.... or if you look at all the at bats besides the HRs.... Cards & Cubs had very little in terms of good swings on him.
-
I’m highest on Burnes out of the big 3. He is just so dominant for most of his outings. I don’t think HRs will plague him. Growing pains will happen. Guys just aren’t missing mistakes in these first 2 starts. Cubs & Cards are elite offense regardless to records so far & HRs are just part of Miller Park. Think it’s most frustrating because you want him to be lights out & he is going great then hits the HR road bump. Kid will be an Ace. 4 pitches he can throw any count. Power fastball with high spin rate. Can locate. Is intense competitor. He will be special As I write.... another HR.... :/
