  1. Gard is a smart scheduler. Likes to get mid-level games (Stanford, Providence, etc.) and a strong MTE, and I think that always puts Wisconsin in a strong position to get Q1 and Q2 wins early in noncon without overwhelm a building team. I know some get a little down on the guy for his NCAAT record, but lots of programs would take him in a heartbeat.
  2. This is great, I think. If this team guards like they did this tournament, they can beat anyone...
  3. All to play for for the US. The one worry is Iran are very very disciplined and need only a draw. We lack finishers and Zimmerman looked shaky today, so I worry about missing chances and giving one up on the break.
  4. Big win and bounce back for the Badgers. Tough team. Going to be in a lot of close games.
  5. Very interesting. Every team will be alive going into the last day. England can clinch advancement (and essentially the group) with a win. I love it. I know the scoreless draw was the prefered US result, but this is way more fun.
  6. Very much looking forward to tomorrow. I don't much buy the "popularize the game" narrative (soccer seems like the NHL to me, a sport that's going to draw in a smaller group of very dedicated fans, and I think that's one of it's charms). After the World Cup, this match will not be able to do much to either accelerate or impede the growth of the sport. That said, it's a great test of this promising young team. I think they're up to the challenge. I might start Pulisic up top so Weah and Aaronson can go out wide. Might be tactically too much on three days prep, but those look like your three best up front. Fully expect to see Gio for at least a half hour.
  7. That is supposed to be reviewable. Frustrating. So frustrating. Badgers played great in the second half. They'll be fine if they keep up that level of intensity. Stings to lose on basically two random scrambles, but that's life. Go get USC tomorrow, and you'll have to happy with 2-1 and a loss the computers will respect.
  8. Completely, Kalle. World Cup is better with the Italians in it. I don't think, in my sports-viewing life, I've ever been more stunned than watching the last ten minutes of that North Macedonia match. As much as I'm enjoying Napoli's wonder season, I hope we see Italy marching deep into the American tournament in 2026.
  9. Feel for Messi and Argentina. So much emotion and weight wrapped up in these games. It's like watching someone slowly unravel. If they can bounce back, it'll be a hell of a story.
  10. 538 has US slight favorites to advance (45 to 37 with Iran at 25 percent). I think the US is better, but Wales seems more emotionally resilient, and that matters in World Cups. My big takeaway is that England isn't as good as they looked and Iran isn't as bad as they looked. There is a long way to go in this group, and I could see everyone having it all to play for on the last match day. I'm weirdly less intimidated by England than Iran, maybe because I put too much stock in emotional resonance in this kind of event. As for today: not much more to say. Take of two halves, yada yada yada. We're still alive and in control of our destiny, and that's an alright place to be. If we go out, the consolation prize is that Gregg is out too, and I am pretty convinced he's not the guy to bring this team deep into a tournament, even given four more years of seasoning. I just don't think he gets international football. Leaving out Gio, opening yourself up to Acosta and Yedlin for 20 minutes of a 1-1 game...can't manage your bench like that in moments of this magnitude.
  11. Ecuador looked strong. Looking forward to Baby Eagles tomorrow.
  12. Sadio Mane's injury likely makes Ecuador and the Netherlands favorites to advance from Group A, which may impact the US. Feel for him. One of the world's most exciting players for sure.
  13. All this seems right. I think conditions in Qatar (namely that it still might be pushing 90 most days) may have a bigger impact on level of play than the timing. US does seem to be in a good place health wise, though, so that's good. My worry is that we tend to struggle against compact, disciplined sides that let you possess the ball and force you to break them down. Wales and Iran both fit that description. I'm with you in the sense of feeling oddly confident about the England match. Mousah is my pick for breakout player. He is the key to Valencia and paired with Gio in midfield, I am expecting big things.
  14. This is definitely the most talented group of players I've seen (following since 1994). Their skill in midfield and out wide is impressive. Back line and striker are pretty thin. And the back is very important at the international level. Not getting out of the group would be VERY disappointing. But, yes, 2026 is the more realistic deep run target.
  15. Despite Qatar and the sheer absurdity and corruption (not to mention violence), I am looking forward to the World Cup. Will be interesting to see US engagement levels when the event is competing with every major domestic sport (including CBB and CFB), baseball excepted. A few quick thoughts: Most disappointing team: England. Could be sneaky tough for them to get out of a group much more difficult than the gut feelings would suggest. HM: Spain (because I think they have the toughest group) and France (because they are so talented, but also potentially very toxic). Most surprising team: But for some health concerns about Mane and Davies, I'd go with Sengal or Canada. I'll say Denmark. Very cohesive team. Uruguay and Japan are up there too. How far will the US go? Round of 16. I think they'd be underdogs against any Group A team in that game. I could see deeper if Mousah and Reyna have the breakout they're capable of. Champion: Brazil. So deep. Feels like their turn. I'll be rooting for Argentina, though.
  16. Toughness and good shooting. That's what will do it for this crew. Obviously, you'll miss Johnny Davis' athleticism, but replacing with two reliable shooters may end up a net positive because college basketball is much more about cohesion and tempo than anything else.
  17. Seconding all of this. From a "fit" perspective, it's hard to think of an American owner better for Norwich. Mark has been very involved with the city of Milwaukee and seems to approach the Brewers as, to some extent, a civic operation. He's presided over the most competitive era in franchise history. If baseball ran it's playoffs like the EPL, the Brewers would have had a couple of Champions League (or at least Europa League) seasons to show for his tenure. Basically this: I would feel good if I were you. Brewers have consistently punched above their weight. Mark is not Todd Boehly. I'll be rooting for Norwich. Hoping they can gain some ground on QPR and get closer to the top of the table this weekend. Hope you'll stick around! We should perhaps add a Norwich thread in addition to our soccer thread. I see no reason why Josh Sargent and the Canaries shouldn't be the official English club of BF.
  18. Have to say, been some wild, fun baseball. Home playoff games in Seattle and Cleveland are going to be insane.
  19. I just came here to say the Cardinals complete vomit job has rekindled the dying embers of my love for baseball. Also, the atmosphere in Cleveland wormed its way into my heart.
  20. If the Crew hold on here....it's worth paying attention to the Padres as well...
  21. I really hate selling out for the platoon advantage. You've got a guy with a ten ERA, and you burn two pinch-hitters so the other manager can bring in a better guy. I want to hit against Nardi. Maybe Mattingly pulls the trigger on a change anyway, but don't hand it to him on a platter.
  22. I think the Phil's have 2 losses left in them, which means the Brewers can afford (checks napkin soaked in nervous sweat) one more of their own. Maybe let's not make it tonight?
  23. Are the Astros going to let their best players go a week without playing? I'd be pretty surprised if good pitchers don't get some innings, if not full outings.
