  1. Tomorrow is a massive day in soccer. Tons of qualifiers. World Cup draw April 1. I actually like the US' chances at the Azteca tomorrow. We'll see.
  2. What I love about college basketball is that, when your team bows out, you can still find a lot to love about this tournament. TCU-Arizona was excellent last night, despite some pretty bad officiating. The Sweet 16 is fantastic. St. Peter's provides the small-school shock of a story. Providence has been the most fun team in the sport for my money all year. Duke and Texas Tech in a game that puts athleticism versus just grinding defense. Gonzaga and Arkansas about to track meet. Houston and Arizona in a massive clash of styles (one of the fastest teams in the sport v. one of the absolute slowest). Purdue going for its first FF in forever. Villanova, the closest thing the last decade has to a dynasty, somehow flying way under the radar with a HOF coach. Even the Iowa State/Miami game is fascinating because ISU won two games last year. I think it's a great, balanced Sweet 16. There isn't game I want to skip over Thursday or Friday, and that's rare. I would love to see a Providence, St. Peter's, Gonzaga, Nova FF, which won't happen, but there are some fun, fun combos out there. Should be another great hoops weekend.
  3. Yeah, I think a lot will depend on Carlsen. How big of a jump can he make? Is he closer to Happ or Reuvers? Then, it's maybe Jordan Davis (is he a surprise transfer candidate?), who has the athleticism to be a player in the Big Ten. If success can be sustained by internal improvement, it's those two guys, I think. Crowl to a lesser degree. Wahl is gonna be Wahl, and that's good. Externally, it's transfers. 2/3 types. Good news is: Chuckie's already a PG. When you have a guy like him, you're starting from a solid foundation.
  4. Forgot about that. Thanks.
  5. Think UW will need to pick up something in the transfer market, have Vogt, Crowl, and Carlsen take a big step forward, or both. Jordan Davis will get a lot of minutes (any possibility he transfers?). Chuckie will be the leader. Wahl is the ultimate glue guy. They'll have some nice pieces, but somebody is gonna have to score.
  6. Yeah...never thought I'd see a team out-Wisconsin Wisconsin. Iowa State did. I mean, that's life in March. As Adam and Homer said, you lose Chuckie and go 2 for forever from three, you lose. Crowl being unable to become a reliable jump shooter really hurt this team all year. They really need a threat from 3 beyond Davison.
  7. Yeah, Chuckie is so important to this team. Looks like everyone is a little tight right now. Long way to go.
  8. Before tip, I'll say this: Win or lose, Gard's the right guy for this program. 7 seasons. 5 NCAA tourneys (6, really, bc...2020). 2 Sweet Sixteens. Only one first round loss. 6-4 all-time tournament play. Reset the program after the best coach in Badger history. Maybe the most consistent program in the country outside of the elite brands since 2000.
  9. Holloway is so fun to watch. Just very calm and yet energized all at once. Team mirrors him for sure. I really hope he finds success at the the Hall. It's hard to make that jump--at the MAAC level, it's just easier to get guys to believe in you in some ways (though you also have to prove to them why they shouldn't transfer just about every week). Anyway, the Big East is awesome. It needs a second marquee program. And seconded on Iona. For as good as that program's been (very good), it's pretty shocking they haven't really threatened like St. Peter's. They got an at-large bid in the last decade! From the MAAC! They had enough cache to hire a top-3 all-time famous coach! The distance between them and the rest of that league is massive. This is why college hoops is fun. St. Peter's is national news. And people will remember it for decades. Already. Independent of whatever happens next week.
  10. From a spending perspective, St. Peter's might be the biggest shock to ever make the Sweet 16. Very little pedigree. Tiny budget. Beat the POY and most known brand in the sport. And did it looking confident and athletic. Pretty incredible stuff.
  11. Kalscheur (sp?) Is the shooter, I think. Minnesota transfer. Gard should have a good scouting report on him. I mean, stuff happens in March. 40 minute game. Short 3-point line. Badgers should be a 2-1 favorite (and, turns out, this is exactly what 538 has). I think they get it done. In any case, this is exactly where you want to be. This was great placement for Wisconsin. Now just have to take advantage.
  12. Iowa State really, really struggles to score. I like the Badgers chances in a game that's going to be a grind. Not many teams tougher IMO.
  13. Two teams trending in opposite directions. Marquette peaked at the wrong time, it felt like. Still, a great start to the Shaka era, as others have said. Looking forward to MU becoming a consistent tourney presence and deep run threat.
  14. It's the plate discipline. I know clubhouse stuff is hard (impossible?) to measure, but can McCutchen's elite eye rub off on people? Can he be a locker room hitting coach? I know that's not a fashionable question these days, but, for a team that struggles with approach, it can't hurt to be around a guy who is a) pretty good at it and b) by all accounts a great presence in the locker room.
  15. UW is better than Colgate. But Colgate's a much better 3-point shooting team. I think size and athleticism will keep a lot of those shooters in check, but that's the reason to worry in round 1. Colgate might end up plus-15 on threes, especially given the Badgers' struggles there. Cannot have scoring droughts when that's the case. That's the thing keeping this close for me. Colgate goes like 10 for 26 from three while UW goes 2 for 12. Then, you're in a really tight game almost no matter what. I don't think that'll happen, but you'll have to keep Colgate off the offensive glass. Can't be giving up extra possessions.
  16. Mostly very short stories. One book out there, a few novels in drawers. Aways loved stage plays. Very cool.
  17. This is really true for me too. Emotional reasons don't cloud my judgment on the actual impact of this, but I love the idea of getting to watch a fun player contribute in Milwaukee. I have always wanted to root for Cutch, even though he always killed us it seemed, so that's really a nice feeling.
  18. I like this. Nice for me to see some info about people who I usually see through screen names and avatars too. 1) From: Fox cites, but lived in the Twin Cities and Quad Cities (which are somehow blackout territory... yuck). 2) early late 30s, haha. Older by the day. 3) Been reading BF since like 2004. Posting for 10-15 years. 4) I never really played baseball past youth ball. Love sports but am more of a runner/fitness guy and had lots of other interests. 5) My favorite Brewer ever is Carlos Gomez. So much fun. Just was always himself. Mark Loretta is underappreciated. The guy was awesome. Currently, I'll say Adams. He's in the Gomez mold. 6) I write fiction, so that's my Twitter list. Love reading Nate Silver, though. 7) I read a lot and love film, especially international film. But also college hoops and soccer. ? Community here is great. Lots of people who think hard about baseball and take the long view while still appreciating the irrational emotional loyalty of fandom.
  19. Yeah, this is as good a path as you'll ever get. That said, LSU is very athletic and Iowa State can grind and grind and grind. I think UW matches up well with both of them. I'd make them a little over 50 percent to get to the Sweet 16. Big favorite round 1, slight fav, round two. This tournament is crazy. But that's as good of odds as you'll see. Edit: 538 has Badgers 48% to get to Sweet 16. Pretty good.
  20. This is what I'm thinking as well. He wasn't moving a whole lot off ball and I'll take the extra day or 2 off. Hopefully we play Friday as well for another extra day. With a top 4 seed, Badgers will play Friday. Milwaukee has the 18/20th. I suppose they could get sent to Indy for the Thurs/Sat regional, but I think that's pretty unlikely. If they fall to a 5 or something, all bets are off.
  21. They CAN ban the shift as early as next year. Though it seems to be trending in that direction, it is not written that they WILL ban. I hope they don't. I don't think it will achieve the desired results, and you're making a big philosophical sacrifice to get there.
  22. Yeah, the gap between 14 and 13 seeds is pretty big. That said, Wisconsin usually gets upset when they play major conference 12 seeds (Oregon, Ole Miss come to mind). I just don't see them losing to a team like UAB, for example (and UAB is really good). The Badgers are so disciplined possession by possession, it just takes almost perfect basketball for an undersized team to win. A lot of elite bluebloods have good D efficiency numbers, but it's based on length and athleticism. The Badgers play very together, and that makes them really tough outs for teams that aren't old, cohesive, and big. Of course, Virginia lost to UMBC once, so what do I know. I'll say this: give me South Dakota St. or Chattanooga any day over Notre Dame or something.
  23. I feel both UW and MU will benefit from playing out-of-conference teams. I'm a fade the SEC kind of guy, and the ACC/Pac-12 are weak too. I'd like MU against any of the B1G bubble teams too.
  24. Second this. Badgers need rest and to not play more B1G teams. So physical. I think they're going to be one of the toughest teams in the field. Make us a 4 with UCONN or LSU and let's Sweet 16 this.
  25. Pretty incredible to be down 2. Defense kept them in it. Davison needs to get some open looks at three. Opens things up if he can get a couple down.
