  1. Anyone notice the nationals lost 4 in a row? They are only 2 games ahead of the cubs now and are potentially in range if we win today...especially if their losing streak continues.
  2. I'll continue beating the dead horse here, but I couldn't be happier with the defense. It's easy to say "oh Trubisky sucks"...but while true, any NFL QB could light up any defense in 7 on 7 type drills. Trubisky was under pressure all night long. The front 7 was fantastic, constantly in his face and constantly getting pressure. From what I saw, the coverage was very good behind as well. I thought it was a bit weird that the Bears didn't really try to run more, we'll see how this front 7 handles the run. But hard to imagine them struggling against it too much...they won at the line of scrimmage today, they were going to shut down anything the Bears did. The offense showed glimpses, but were clearly very rusty. It will certainly get better, but yesterday was not very good overall.
  3. For those wondering, a little birdie told me Pina's "head discomfort" was him feeling dizzy/nauseous...felt like he was going to hurl.
  4. I don't see a "ridiculous imbalance of lefty hitters". If the lineup is healthy, Braun-Cain-Hiura-Grandal (SW)-Arcia are all RH. Yellich hits everybody so that leaves only Thames and Moose as the imbalance. With Grandal going to 1B and Pina catching against lefties, that leaves only 3B an area of concern. Granted their best lineup is with Thames and Moose and I agree there is an imbalance when injuries to Cain and Braun happen. Grandal, Arcia, and Pina are all better against RHP...significantly better in fact. I know Pina has hit lefties well this year, but the last 2 years he was better vs RHP. A normal lineup heading into the season was Cain, Yelich, Braun, Shaw, Grandal, Moose, Aguilar/Thames, Arcia...in some order. That's 3/4 RHB, 3/4 LHB, and a switch...bench of Pina, Gamel, Perez. On paper, that's as balanced as it gets. But when you factor in Arcia/Grandal being better against RHP, it ends with our lineup generally being a bit more effective against RHP. Overall, I don't think it's fair to criticize lineup balance at all. This lineup is far more balanced than our 2008-2011 lineups which were very very RH heavy.
  5. Man, that defensive line is just wrecking our o-line. Rodgers didn't have a chance on 3rd down...
  6. I'm fairly meh on Cobb, but the rest of those will be classic jerseys of star caliber players. Favre, Woodson, and maybe Nelson will make the HOF if they haven't already. I don't track that, but I have to assume Favre is in. Nice set of jerseys. My only jersey is an oversized AJ Hawk...the only use for that will be to throw over all my winter gear if/when I attend the late December games.
  7. Optimist viewpoint, Quintana was not exceptionally sharp in his last start. He allowed a lot of baserunners and generally got hit hard. He did well to limit the damage though. Unfortunately, a good chunk of the guys doing the damage will not be playing today. And we'll likely be pretty lefty heavy...which is bad news against Quintana.
  8. Definitely not agent39, who scoffed at the mere suggestion of signing him to a 3-yr deal for $12 million. I believe he said he would be laughing at it. He's still being super over-confident on social media. Makes it seem like he has all the MLB offers he wants...and just needs to pick the one he likes best. I would love to see JJ latch on somewhere and have continued success. I'll be rooting for him so long as he plays for all but 1 MLB team.
  9. In case anyone forgot. https://247sports.com/nfl/chicago-bears/Article/Bears-ran-t-formation-vs-Packers-121694581/ I'm very anti-Collinsworth...so enjoy any opportunity to poke fun at him
  10. I was admittedly very high on Smoak as a deadline rental, his batted ball profile really took a nose dive the last month before the deadline though. I didn't even think about the 26th man, that makes it way easier to have a roster spot for someone to strict platoon with Thames. My first thoughts were Braun, Hiura, or a catcher to play 1b against LHP. For Hiura, we'll likely find a better version of Perez to compete with Arcia for starting SS...the loser becomes a utility guy that could play 2b vs LHP(If Arcia is not a starter, he's probably always playing SS when in the game with the starting SS moving to 2b in this case...but you generally get the idea). We could always look at someone like Todd Frazier to play some 3b and 1b, maybe not specifically him but a 3b/1b combo. Lots of options.
  11. I know this isn't the Thames thread, but I'm starting to wonder if Thames is approaching a statline where he's worth the $7.5m option. He's had a pretty darn good month, and season overall. You really don't want him starting against LHP, but tweaking the roster to allow a RH hitting option at 1b against LHP should not be difficult or expensive. I'll be very curious to see if that gets exercised.
  12. Ever since I realized how big our WR are this year, I've been obsessed with the idea of having giant receivers to help with run blocking(and big targets for Rodgers for a change). Lazard being the biggest, makes me very happy we made this move.
  13. He probably falls into that 2-3 year deal for 6-8 million per year bucket doesn't he? Sample is small, but just look at the stuff. He's definitely worked his way into pitching the very back end of games for this team. You could easily argue he's our 2nd best reliever.
  14. You all know we're almost certainly getting 2 of 4 this weekend, right? Primarily because it's by far the most obnoxious number. 3-4 wins clearly puts us back in the 2nd wildcard race. 0-1 wins clearly puts us out of it, we'd pretty much have to win out at that point. 2 wins leaves us 4 back with 20 to play. It's sorta kinda in contention...definitely an annoying spot to be.
  15. Apparently it's an extension, so his contract currently is 8 years, $103 million with $50 million guaranteed. Alot of this depends on structure...how easy is it for Dallas to get out of the last couple years of the contract? You'd think he'll be a stud for at least the next 3-4 years barring a significant injury...possibly as many as 6 years.
  16. But isn't it the bad/losing teams that have given the Brewers problems this year? 1-2 v. Miami (48-88) 1-2 v. Seattle (58-81) 0-3 v. LA Angels (65-73) 0-3 v. Padres (64-73) Had they merely split those games against bottom of the barrel teams, they'd be in position for the wild card right now with a legit shot at the division. Accordingly, to suggest that they have a run in them yet this year because they play some weaker clubs ignores the facts. Outside of Pittsburgh they haven't played well against losing teams. I see your point, maybe they will give us fits. But it will definitely be an easier task taking 3 of 4 from one of those teams than the Nationals or Cardinals or Braves or Dodgers. The odds are certainly not in our favor, we need to hope we can take care of business against these bad teams to have a chance.
  17. If the Brewers make a run over the next month, it will be the offense beating down other teams while the pitching keeps us in it. That's been the formula for success for this team since we spent all that capital on Moose/Grandal. Right now, we are weirdly pitching better than we are hitting. I suppose part of that is injuries. I'll generally agree with brewcrew92 that our September callups probably give us more of an advantage than most teams. That said, the amount of value you attribute to those additions is far more than they are worth. It's not like we're going to start putting up all zeroes because Suter/Nelson are back. Also those guys won't be heavily involved in scoring...which is how we're going to win games.
  18. I was just poking around and noticed the injury report, how do we literally have 20 guys on the injury report...in week 1? Why is this team always seemingly so injured?
  19. The injuries for me are the biggest issue. The schedule really softens, 17-8 isn't THAT crazy. After today, we have 2 tough series and 5 less tough series. I'll agree with everyone that we need a good showing against the Cubs. Need 2 wins minimum, 3 would obviously be better as we'd be 1-3 games back depending on the outcomes today. Obviously tougher to beat the cubs with a couple top players out, especially hiura against all that LHP.
  20. Lol regarding joe maddon. He does the same thing every year. It's amazing how often he gets to the 9th inning with 1 reliever left in his bullpen. CC tends to be the opposite, he tries being efficient and using guys for multiple innings when he can, while allowing plenty of rest when possible. Both approaches have their issues, CC is more inclined to leave a pitcher in 1-2 batters too long...but i still prefer his approach to joe maddon style bullpen management.
  21. You make a lot of good points about the reinforcements we have coming up, but when you say stuff like our staff can compete with Wash or NYM...you lose credibility. We don't have 1 pitcher that's better than the top 2 starters for the Mets. We have one injured pitcher...that would slot into their rotation if healthy, the other 4 wouldn't make their top 5. As a team, we can compete with those teams. But our staffs are not indisputably better. If we make the playoffs, it will be a team effort led primarily by an offensive breakout. Scoring 4+ runs every game and the pitching doing enough...for the most part.
  22. Regarding Andrews, does anyone know what kind of speed he has? I know when he plays the field, its CF. I guess I'm just dreaming about him as a LH reliever/elite pinch runner. What a fun combo that could be...
  23. I actually think a fair comparison would be Wade Miley. Who had flashes of brilliance, but came to us on a dirt-cheap deal. He had a really nice year for us, but was also hurt for a chunk of it. I think their ages were also similar. He got 4.5M over 1 year. So yeah maybe 1 year plus an option is the max a team will give him. But let's not try to argue he's some journeyman that will be getting $1-2 million again. He's been relatively healthy throughout his career, I would say a baseline for him for next year is probably what Miley got this year. More likely something like 1/$5m with a team option for $8.5m with $1m buyout...option vests with 150 IP, also maybe add some incentives. Again, not sure I want this. Just trying to gauge what his value might be.
  24. 29 games left and we are 3.5 back of WC2, 5.5 back of the division. We play 7 vs cubs, 2 vs astros, 3 vs cardinals, and 17 against the bottom 5 teams in the NL. The last 13 specifically are against the bottom 5 group. I feel like a very real scenario could be, 3 back of WC2 after the series in STL...and we rattle off 11 or 12 wins to get WC2 and have all the momentum heading into October. I know this isn't the optimism thread...but I'm still hopeful.
