  1. When are teams required to announce their opening day roster?
  2. Looks like it's 5/130 from what I'm seeing. Irritating.
  3. Relax, it's March. Our offense should blow plenty more games open this year than last year. For all we know, both guys could be back in the bullpen by May at which point we could be fine and look for an addition at the deadline. No reason to panic in March.
  4. I think it's more likely we make a small trade or pick up somebody else that was cut than sign Kimbrel. I just can't see us spending any more right now. It would certainly be fun if I was wrong, that's my hunch anyways.
  5. The pen is less effective with him as closer, absolutely. His effectiveness does not change at all though. He's still going to wreck hitters whether it's 1 inning at a time or 2-3 innings at a time.
  6. Who closes because Hader is far less effective pigeon holed into that role. That is not a good looking pen with Jeffress and Knebel out. It isn't horrible, but not great. First off, that's completely false. He's equally effective whether pitching in the 9th inning or 7th inning. CC likes using him in multi-inning stints as a virtually surefire bridge to one of our 9th inning guys. I think we see similar usage, except Hader will probably pitch the 8th and 9th inning instead of 2 innings between the 6th and 8th. And yes, that means we'll need to rely on other arms for saves in addition to Hader if we go that route since Hader can't pitch 2 innings every day. I'm guessing Claudio and Guerra get those chances initially depending on matchups.
  7. Yep. Also really hoping JJ's shoulder weakness isn't like Thornburg's shoulder weakness that turned out to be "miss a season" shoulder weakness. I'm way way more concerned about Knebel than JJ. I heard JJ is throwing a bullpen today. If that goes well he'll be on target to return to the bullpen in mid-April. That's seriously a huge deal. Right now our best RH reliever is a contest between Taylor Williams and Junior Guerra. I like both guys, but I don't like them being our best RH reliever...we need to have better options and quickly.
  8. So with the rotation set, opening bullpen is probably Hader, Anderson, Guerra, Albers, Claudio as locks. Barnes, Williams, Fields, Patricka are options for the back end of the rotation. Any other options I'm missing? I don't think Houser, Derby, Diplan, or Wilkerson are immediate options. Maybe at some point in April but not opening day. I also think with the young arms, we need 8 in the bullpen right away. We have 3 days off in March/April combined, that's not a lot.
  9. They literally said they were concerned about Knebel's elbow. I'm worried until each has put some innings under their belt. I don't think this is a fair statement either. I think they picked the best 5 guys for the rotation. Anderson has seriously struggled all spring after getting basically shutdown last September. I don't think they'd alter the plan for one of the 3 young guys simply because we are having issues in the bullpen. We have other arms for the pen, and hopefully some other guys can step up and fill the void. Trades are also possible, as is keeping an eye on cuts other teams are making.
  10. One thought I had. Does anyone think teams are pushing these guaranteed deals on younger players, knowing that in 2 years the MLBPA will probably negotiate less team control...and these guys all would have been WAY better off not taking the guaranteed money(unless of course they get hurt or don't pan out). I'm specifically looking at the contracts for Eloy Jimenez and Brandon Lowe, where 6 team control years are being bought out by guaranteed money.
  11. This actually looks like a market value contract. Arenado got $34.5M in his first 3 years of arbitration and $32.5M/year in FA. Machado got $32.5M in 3 years arbitration and $30M/year in FA. This is pretty close to both(slightly more actually), albeit without having to pay for likely decline years. Bregman will also reach FA at age 30, so he could still get one more big contract if he remains elite through this deal.
  12. All of that definitely helps and has led to success(otherwise what guy with only a 92 mph fastball and solid curve would make it past AA?), but will MLB hitters learn to pick up on and figure it out as they see it more if he basically has a 2.5 pitch arsenal? Maybe, maybe not. His odds of success would drastically improve if he developed even an average changeup that he could throw 10-12% of the time. Without the changeup, it's anybody's guess as to whether extension and spin rate will be enough to fool mlb hitters long term with a very limited arsenal of pitches.
  13. Pretty much leaves us with 6 guys for 5 spots(5 for 4 if you lock in Chacin), and the loser could either open in AAA rotation or MLB bullpen. I wonder when CC will announce that decision. I'm also curious when he announces his decision at catcher. Not really a decision, just curious when Kratz gets the bad news that he's either AAA or gone.
  14. Good job of explaining what’s likely to happen with Peralta. Goodness gracious the guys only 22 years old and he’s going to get better! And yes our better lineup will lead to more runs scored this year. Actually we averaged 4.6 rpg last year and we should be able to bump that up to five this year. Also, keep in mind he has two different fastballs. So he basically has been using 3 pitches, and his change is fine- he just hasn't really needed it yet. I have been his biggest fanboy since A ball, so I feel the need to bring this up every time someone mentions all he has is a FB. I'm not trying to overly bash Peralta here, but his arsenal of pitches generally hasn't played effectively at the MLB level. Guys that basically throw a breaking pitch and multiple different styles of fastball. Kluber is one, Arrieta was another for a time but I think at this point he throws his changeup enough that it's a pitch. I can't think of any others that have had consistent major league success without a changeup or multiple legit breaking pitches. So no, I don't think we should expect Peralta to have consistent success with his current arsenal. That said, I'm sure the changeup has been a top priority and hopefully he learns to harness it as soon as this year.
  15. No. No, they do don’t. Agreed with Brew4U. Man if those 3 guys are unproven, what exactly does a guy have to do to become a proven talent? All 3 of those guys are probably in the top 5 of our most talented starting pitchers. All 3 probably won't break with the rotation due to other factors, but they probably all deserve it. James Shields would be a silly signing. He's just not a good pitcher anymore. His best bet is to grind it out with a rebuilding club on a low $ deal and hope to have a good enough first half to get traded to a contender looking for depth.
  16. It's hard to think about extending Yelich. I feel like he's too good/valuable and the contract won't allow us to put winning pieces around him. 4 years away though, so we'll see.
  17. Maldonado has ONLY made $8.5 million so far? Lol must be nice. Just meant to be humorous. I know to us it seems like a lot. At the same time, the upfront salaries are high so Uncle Sam is going to take a huge chunk. Then his agent takes a chunk. Then the MLBPA. I would be surprised if half that money made it's way into Maldy's pocket. And if his career was over right now, he might still have to work(with no marketable skills other than baseball) unless of course he invested his money wisely. Adding $12 million is a game changer.
  18. Is it weird that I still think he's a little underpaid? He's definitely on the short list of greatest players ever...already.
  19. Hinch seems like a jerk as well. "We have technology to help you get better and that these pitches are strikes," Hinch said he told Hernandez. "He had kind of an arrogant attitude about it and didn't want to hear it." Seems like an incredibly stupid thing to say to an umpire. Maybe Hinch should let MLB handle umpire training or complain the them. That being said, Angel Hernandez is a disgrace. If what Hinch said Angel said to him is true, he admitted to making incorrect calls on purpose. He deserves whatever crap players and managers give him. Not just the worst umpire in baseball but probably one of the worst people in baseball as well. The game will be forever better once he's gone. I don't get the vibe that Angel is admitting to missing calls on purpose. Just that he makes about 4 mistakes per game, my guess is he's basing that off his review after the game. Reality is probably closer to 4 mistakes per inning. I personally can't stand Hernandez though. Worst umpire in the game by a wide margin, plays the race card and sues MLB because he doesn't get picked to ump playoff games, subsequently makes a number of critical mistakes in the playoffs...and despite all this is by far the most arrogant umpire in the game, throwing out managers and players on a whim. He's definitely the type that would make a bad call on purpose to bait a manager that he wants to throw out. It's like he really wants to be a hard-nozed old-school type of ump...but really he's just trash and the game would be so much better off without him.
  20. The back end of our bullpen is right up there with the best in the league. And again, we aren't going to have 8 Josh Hader's. Your expectations seem unrealistic. Yes, we don't want Williams or Albers closing games...that doesn't mean they can't get outs for us in the 6th and 7th innings, or pitch in low stress innings when the game is already out of reach. As long as we have 3-5 guys that can pitch the key spots...and the low stress guys aren't dreadful...we'll be fine. I don't see any likely 6 era guys in our bullpen. If we get bad Albers, he won't be on the team by May 15th(or he'll be on the DL). We have enough options that the low stress guys will have very short leashes.
  21. Sounds like the Wade Miley talk from last year. Totally different years and different situations. Wade Miley was previously a solid starter. Tomlin has been nothing but pure trash and has only proven that in ST. Wade Miley also looked like a changed man in ST last year. He had just added the cutter and put in the work that offseason...CC could not stop talking about the guy last year. Tomlin did similar and adjusted his offerings, but from the reports I've read and comments from CC...he doesn't seem to have much of a chance. He hasn't improved like Miley has. And our other young pitchers are outperforming him by a significant margin. We also have more depth, in large part due to those young pitchers.
  22. They'll probably try to skip occasional starts and maybe rotate guys down to the minors for a couple starts, and I could also see some combination of them moving to the bullpen in August or September depending on our situation. This might be the year that we trade for a lights out SP at the deadline, at which point we may be able to shift one or two of these guys to the bullpen to limit their innings. As for the math, I think the general rule is to add 20% innings per year...not 25 innings. That puts Burnes and Peralta at 175ish. If Burnes makes 30 starts at 5.5 innings per start, that's 165 innings. He'd still be able to pitch in the playoffs. If he's throwing well and looking at more like 6 innings per start, that's when we have a good/bad problem. I would think they'll intend to use these guys initially without concern for innings limits. I'm sure they have contingencies in mind if innings start to become an issue, but probably won't alter their strategy until it becomes an issue. There's no guarantee these guys are healthy all year. These guys could strain an oblique, roll an ankle, any number of things and get shut down for a few weeks. At which point we might have issue simply getting them to the innings number we want.
  23. Albers,Barnes,Petricka and Williams > Weak Can’t believe some people think our pen still a strength. You're seriously discounting Barnes, Albers, and Williams. Albers is a year removed from a sub-2 era season. He was pitching better until his injury. The other 2 are big velocity RH pitchers. If your expectation is having 8 Josh Hader's in the bullpen, I can understand your disappointment.
  24. Couldn't agree more. I hope he's just a motivator for the young guys. Also Woodruff is doing his best to try and make CC's decision difficult. 6 up, 6 down, 5 k's so far today.
  25. Update on rotation. Appears Tomlin is being seriously considered.
