I tend to agree with the crowd that Shaw just needs some time to get his swing right. And who knows, maybe the wrist really is a significant issue. I definitely think 3-4 weeks or more in the minors would do him a ton of good. Thing is, this has nothing to do with seeing pitches. I've felt like his eye at the plate is pretty similar to 2018 or 2017...his swing mechanics simply must be way off. The guy was missing 92 mph fastballs literally right down the middle...over and over again...on hitters counts. Not even a foul ball, a whiff. Most of our pitchers would probably hit that ball hard most of the time and our slugging 3b can't even touch it. Once Shaw starts hitting and his swing starts working again...you re-evaluate. Maybe Shaw becomes a rotational player, maybe we trade someone, maybe someone else is struggling or gets dinged up and he goes back to an everyday player. Really tough to say anything definitive at this point. -

Absolutely, very good chance the Cubs wear out down the stretch again. The Cubs have 2 off days between now and July 5th. 50 games in 52 days...barring one of their classic "rain-out/rest days" when it's 68 and sunny. That's a busy stretch. -
It's really easy to say "well someone should pay him what he wants...he deserves it". None of the 30 teams want to stand up and be that team. I am always so curious to know the truth in these cases as to what he's turning down. Not what one side or the other spills to the media...but the truth. I don't think we'll know much until he signs and even then we likely won't get the definitive truth.

For me, this is far more anticipated than Arcia...simply because it was very unlikely Arcia was going to be an impact bat immediately(or ever). He was a clear glove first guy to shore up the defense. Even if their prospect values are/were similar on paper...you notice the bat and slash line way more than superb defense. -

Once Hiura comes up, he's likely going to be here to stay. I think his bat isn't going to let us send him back down. I really think Shaw is just lost at the plate. It's astonishing how badly he's missing 92 mph fastballs down the middle from RH pitchers. I counted 4 or 5 just this series that he couldn't even foul off in the 92 range. I don't think Shaw is done being good, I just think he needs a timeout. Right now he's hurting the club and is not our best option. I'm in favor of sending Shaw down for a few weeks to work on mechanics or whatever he needs to start hitting again...and let Hiura play everyday. You make the decision about bringing Shaw back up once he starts hitting again. Hopefully the guys make it a tough decision. -
I'm going to go with 16-11. My heart is saying 18-9 as that is a slightly softer schedule than April(I also think the SP improves a lot this month), but there's still no easy wins on the schedule anywhere. We have yet to get series with any clear tanking teams.

Reading the comments today after the Gio signing I'm struggling to understand why there has been so much consternation over what I've been expecting / calling for. That is, stacking the 12 man staff with what are traditionally considered starters and having them used all over the weekly 54-65 innings a team pitches. Today I see people glad another starter was added so a we can shift long men to the pen. Well, that's exactly what I've been arguing for. Get rid of the 1 inning and 1 out specialists and have a staff full of guys who can start one day, give you 3-4 good innings out of the gate and then pitch a couple innings three days later. You'd truly be able to play matchups at all times rather than the current model of "it's Davies turn in the rotation". So this is more proof that you were right all along?...got it. Or maybe they added GG because almost our entire SP staff is struggling right now, and it gives us an opportunity to send Burnes/Peralta or any other struggling pitchers to AAA to work on stuff and still have a starter available to eat innings. Signing GG and rotating pitchers as we have is done out of necessity, not strategy...because almost everyone on our pitching staff is struggling right now. Maybe try looking at moves simply for what they are, rather than "how can I twist this move to fit my narrative and prove I'm right?"

I would have been super annoyed by this in mid-March, but with all 3 young pitchers struggling a bit and no Nelson...we could use a guy like Gio. -
I think you're simply underthinking it. There are a lot of reasons that no team is implementing anything remotely resembling your strategy over the course of a season. Believe it or not, you are not 2 steps ahead of all 30 baseball GM's.

I tend to agree with the start Thames crowd more...and generally in a platoon with Aguilar. I'll add Aguilar is hitting the ball better, but remember how he thrived in a PH role and basically forced his way into the lineup. I think making him do that again is a good idea. It's a shame that Aguilar and Shaw are both struggling, otherwise the easy solution would be to bring up Hiura and move Moose to 3b with Shaw or Aguilar at 1b. We definitely have options once more guys get going, but right now it's tough with so many corner infielders struggling to hit.

Umm, bring in one of the other 11-12 pitchers geared to go 2-4 innings on any given day? So you have 12 guys all capable of 2-4 inning outings and need 2-3 days off in between. For simplicity, let's say the 2 prior days went perfectly and you used 6 pitchers for 3 innings each. Now your guy gets shelled in the first inning and needs to get pulled, you now only have 5 pitchers to choose from as the other 7 are completely unavailable. And you actually only have 3 EXTRA pitchers to choose from as 2 are already earmarked for the current game. And again, this assumes everything works perfectly the 2 days prior. So your comment above makes no sense, because you will almost never have 11 pitchers available to pick from on a given day...only on opening day/after the all star break. Bad outings and extra innings would absolutely destroy this pitching strategy. It is not sustainable over the course of the season and won't ever happen. MLB is also actively making this strategy more difficult by soon limiting numbers of pitchers on the active roster, September callups, and changing the IL to 15 day instead of 10...making shuttle service strategy more difficult.

I'm hoping Urias can help Braun break out of his slump. He's not seeing the ball well right now, and he's had success against Urias in the past. Heck a lot of our lineup has had success against Urias.

This is my thought too. Wilkerson did such an excellent job stopping the damage, and add on the wildly unexpected 2 run hr....would be quite something if we could rally and come back in this one.

We should trade Yelich/Cain and start Woodruff, Suter, Wilkerson in the outfield from now on.

Arcia's atbats this year have been so much better than last year, I think his numbers will continue to trend up. He doesn't swing at the slider away nearly as much, or at least hasn't to this point. That's really what ruined his season last year, completely unable to recognize/handle that pitch. Word got out, and it was sliders for days. He seems to be looking to go to the opposite field most of the time, so even if he does encounter a slider just off the plate...he's still able to get to it and poke it to RF. I'm a bit surprised more teams aren't trying to pitch him inside considering his approach lately. Hard to send an inside fastball to RF.

Usually a winning record and low run differential is the sign of a very strong bullpen with a mediocre offense/starting pitching. It's a bit unique I think that the offense is so strong and bullpen weak, yet we continue to win the close ones for the most part. Hader definitely helps, but he's really the only lockdown guy in the bullpen right now. Is anyone worried about the use of Claudio? I feel like Counsel is going to pull a Joe Maddon with him and wreck his arm by mid-August.

This is about where I'm at with Burnes/Peralta. They've had 3 starts. They'll probably get at least a handful more starts before any sort of change is considered. All that said, is Chase Anderson really a better option than either guy? Or do we look at Zack Brown or Adrian Houser? That's what we are looking at if we make a change, aside from signing Keuchel which I simply don't think will happen. Regarding Peralta, I don't understand why he doesn't throw his offspeed stuff more. You can't get guys out in this league with fastball only, not as a starter. I don't care how much extension or spin rate or whatever other trendy metric, these are MLB hitters...and Peralta is likely facing multiple all-star caliber hitters every start. These hitters don't become all-stars because a guy can dominate them with fastball only. I think hitters would have a much tougher time catching up to his high fastball if he threw the breaking pitch more, and low fastballs if it could potentially be a changeup that drops out of the zone.

I was putzing through Erceg's peripherals so far, and he seems to be quietly having a good start to the season. K and BB rates are outstanding. He has a 190 BABIP and an 882 OPS heading into today, I assume that doesn't count the bomb he already hit today. Has anyone seen anything notably different from him this year? While the sample is small, everything I'm seeing is very promising for him.
