  1. Hard to believe a guy nicknamed "Mr. October" didn't come in higher on those lists. Not trying to argue he's been more valuable than Rivera, just expected him higher on this list.
  2. I hope he hits his way into an $80 million deal next offseason...not from us.
  3. Thanks guys, from the guy that's too cheap to pay $2/month for a subscription
  4. Anyone with a subscription willing to list out what his other offers were, if specific offers were included? https://theathletic.com/781777/2019/01/23/i-had-a-lot-of-good-deals-inside-yasmani-grandals-free-agency-and-how-he-fits-with-the-brewers/
  5. I wonder to some degree if teams are specifically trying to lock out Boras. His clients have suffered more than any others the last couple years. Or maybe Boras is simply getting overly ridiculous with his asking prices. Keuchel, Harper, Moose, Gonzalez...that's 4 of the clear top 7 remaining free agents as Boras clients.
  6. I can't imagine after talking such a big game, that the Phillies don't get one of Machado/Harper. I bet Vegas odds would be close to 1 to 1 that the Phillies get at least one of those guys.
  7. ERA+ isn't the only metric that matters. Mussina also didn't rack up strikeouts like Ryan did. There's something to be said about a guy that struck out 5700 guys over his career. During that 10 year stretch you mention, he was top 10 in WAR in MLB 4 times among SP...and never higher than 3rd. He was simply a very good SP for a long time, never truly great and not up there with the Maddux/Clemens/Johnson/Pedro/Smoltz/Schilling group...he's a significant step below all those guys.
  8. 1. Bryce Harper - Phillies 2. Manny Machado - White Sox 3. A.J. Pollack - Dodgers 4. Dallas Kuechel - Phillies 5. Craig Kimbrel - Phillies 6. Mike Moustakas - Phillies 7. Marwin Gonzalez - Angels 8. Wade Miley - Brewers or Phillies 9. Josh Harrison - Rays I omitted a couple that I don't feel like are quality players and will sign minimal deals somewhere. Even Miley and Harrison seem like stretches to include in a top FA list, but I included them as both are noted in Brewers rumors. The Phillies I expect to go a bit nuts obviously. Their lineup is notably right handed, so I think they aim more for Harper than Machado...and bring in Moustakas as a quality bat to add balance.
  9. This is excellent news. Will be tougher for big markets to poach him...
  10. Walker's numbers are heavily aided by Coors field. 278/370/495 are his away career numbers. Very good numbers, absolutely...but should that stat line be in the hall? Mussina I can understand to some degree due to longevity and postseason success, but he was never really THAT good. He never won a Cy Young, finished in the top 5 a bunch but man the field was weak when he did. His best finish was 2nd in 1999 with a 3.5 ERA, he must have the worst ever stat line for a 2nd place CY young candidate. He also finished 5th with a 4.81 ERA in 1996. Mussina was simply a very good player for a long time, he was never an elite pitcher in the game. Schilling is probably more deserving than Mussina, but won't get in for off the diamond reasons. He had better career numbers and greater postseason success, including a world series MVP and the whole bloody sock thing. Schilling was very close to an elite pitcher, and definitely was exactly that during the postseason...when it mattered most.
  11. I don't know that I agree that voting is better now or will be better going forward than it is was. This is the hall of fame, not the hall of very good. I see comments from someone like Haudricourt where he'd vote for 15 or 16 guys if he was allowed. The writers are too liberal in their voting and just want to fling as many players as possible into the hall of fame. It's supposed to be an exclusive group of the very best players to ever play the game. All that said, many of those old voters were weird about not voting for someone on first ballot no matter what. I cannot figure out for the life of me how Chipper and Griffey weren't unanimous first ballot guys. I'd argue both were more deserving of being unanimous than Rivera, but at this point we're splitting hairs as all 3 guys are clearly hall worthy.
  12. That's fair, but Banda's value was high not all that long ago and may have been traded at peak by the Dbacks for Souza. That's certainly a heck of a lot more value than basically being a throw-in pieces in trade for an outfielder. Looking back, that trade ended up pretty terribly for the Brewers...with Haniger being an all-star and Banda being TJ away from becoming an impact arm at the MLB level...and he still easily could reach that level.
  13. "American Family Insurance, proactively pitched the Brewers an incredibly rich offer for the future naming rights to Miller Park, and we’re proud to welcome American Family to the family we’ve been part of for generations," MillerCoors said in a statement. That above is from jsonline. Maybe this is simply an offer they couldn't refuse? If American Family came out and offered a crazy high numbers that was something like 3 or 4 times what MillerCoors was offering, hard to turn that down? Hopefully that gets spun into building a competitive roster.
  14. The deal is $3.5M per Passan
  15. Looks like my reading is poor today. I don't know how to update topic titles, so hopefully a mod can fix that for me when actual terms are announced. Will be LESS THAN $5M on 1 year.
  16. I'm also wondering if they'll start selling Busch products at the stadium. All sorts of gross......
  17. I actually am just switching off American Family, I shopped around and they were the most expensive of all quotes I received...and frankly they weren't even close. I'm generally turned off by insurance companies, this just feels like another insurance company that has so much stinkin money that they don't even know what to do with it...so we'll buy some additional naming rights.
  18. American Family has the new naming rights.
  19. All fair points, though in this case...the Padres are actually ridiculously loaded with pitching prospects. Of those top 100 prospects, a number of them won't reach potential...but some are bound to be all star or better. It's also not a realistic plan to try and go from 65 wins to 90 wins in one year, I would think the Padres should start the process of incrementally getting better and working towards contention.
  20. This is pretty much it. The Reds last made the playoffs in 2013. In the five seasons since they have won an MLB worst 343 games, 10 fewer than the next worst club. Their offense has been comparable to ours the last three years (93 wRC+/55.2 WAR vs 95 wRC+/56.5 WAR), but they've had thee worst pitching on all of MLB by a huge margin (9.2 WAR vs 24 WAR for the next worst team). After a half decade of being comfortably the worst team in MLB you almost have to make some moves to at least give the appearance of trying. The Reds trying to fix their pitching by bringing in DJ & making the moves they have should make the NL more competitive & thus more interesting, which I can always get behind. Right on. On paper, it looks like the Reds did all the right things. They added 2 quality SP, one of which is a bit of a bounceback candidate. They added excellent complimentary pieces to an already incredibly good offense. I'll admit I'm a bit biased based on what DJ did with our staff, but he'll have a heck of a lot more talent to work with in trying to craft the Reds staff into winners. I honestly don't see a weakness on this team besides potentially pitching, but they've done a lot to address pitching.
  21. I wouldn't necessarily assume that Nelson will get thrown into the rotation opening day, or that Davies/Woodruff get spots over Burnes/Peralta. I know it seems like Davies SHOULD get the spot, but he's also a back of the rotation soft tossing RHP...pitchers like that shouldn't be blocking someone like Burnes in my opinion. I could understand putting Peralta in AAA to work on some things, but I can't see Davies getting a spot over Burnes.
