  1. If he's used correctly (7th middle infield option for extra innings or maybe a defensive switch) I'm OK with it. He's not someone like Nottingham that you could justify wanting to get more reps in AAA. If he starts more than a game, fire Counsell/Stearns. Right. He can also be the 3rd or 4th pinch running option depending on how other guys are used. I could definitely see there being at least a handful of spots through the month where Sogard would be useful. We need to utilitze every small bit of value we can down the stretch. I'll be annoyed if he ever starts or even touches a bat before the 11th inning of a game, unless specifically to sac bunt. He probably shouldn't even take BP, and if he does he should do it with the pitchers where half the time they are practicing bunting.
  2. This Brewers team is built very differently than a historical Brewers team. That said, it can be tough to adjust to someone you haven't seen before. I still think we light this guy up today though. This guy on the surface looks nowhere near capable of pitching in the majors.
  3. I believe I saw something very similar on this guy. I noticed he has decent k/bb ratio.
  4. This is my thought. Anyone that could help on a given day should be up. RH and LH options for PH, defense, every possible arm, 3rd and even 4th catcher. I could see Nottingham and Bandy coming up. One name I haven't seen mentioned is Berry. Despite having Broxton, I could see him getting added to the 40 and coming up to run and play defense.
  5. Pure genius. The rules should obviously prevent this, but if they do not it is silly that teams have a catcher to begin the inning. You'd still want a catcher for foul-tick 3rd strikes and catching pop outs near the plate. A catcher is probably more valuable defensively than a 5th infielder or 4th outfielder.
  6. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/august-trade-targets-to-fight-the-post-deadline-blues/ An article I found with some decent ideas on targets, the pitching targets apply to us the most...but really none of them are the type of guy we should look at unless we have injury issues over the next 2-3 weeks.
  7. FINALLY!!! I shouldn't be this excited that CC finally learned to stagger LH and RH hitters, but better late than never I guess.
  8. 1. Hiura 2. Burnes 3. Turang 4. Medeiros Erceg 5. Ray 6. Lutz 7. Dubon 8. Brown 9. Nottingham 10. Henry 11. Houser 12. Gray 13. Rodriguez 14. Ashby 15. Gatewood 16. Lemons 17. Feliciano 18. Grisham 19. Supak 20. Herrera 21. Bello 22. Diplan 23. Webb 24. Segovia 25. D Williams 26. Ernesto 27. Kirby Last 2 in case someone gets traded by August 8th.
  9. This is very interesting. We'll see how that translates when games matter more. With the game on the line, you might see more guys trying to beat the shift by bunting or slap hitting opposite field against good pitchers than you normally would in a regular season game against a 5+ era pitcher. I tend to enjoy how pretty much everyone outside the Brewers front office and fan base seems to assume Aguilar is big, slow, and immobile. He is 2 of those 3 things, but surprisingly nimble for his size and a good defender at 1b in general. Braun isn't very comfortable at 1b, but his defense in left is still very solid...he has quite a few highlight reel plays this year as proof...the author made him seem like an old man that needed a cane to move around out there. I know that isn't the point of the article, but mildly annoying comments from someone who is supposed to know something about baseball.
  10. Yelich is 7 for 14 career against Kershaw. Him and Braun are pretty much the only guys on the roster with favorable numbers against him. Today probably isn't the day to sit him, maybe tomorrow.
  11. The Cubs do have it fairly easy in August, though September is a different story. And sometimes teams get weirdly good when they sell off pieces and bring up young players. Like the Reds last year. As an example this year, lately the O's and Tigers have been putting up some big run totals. Hopefully the Cubs see Degrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler against the Mets. For me personally, the Cubs losing is a very very close second to the Brewers winning. My own personal crusade against them due to their obnoxious fan base. It's a shame too as most of their players are very likeable. But man, it's almost like they can't enjoy having a good team without simultaneously cranking up their obnoxious a hole routine to all time highs.
  12. I'll also add that I'm very convinced we were in an intense bidding war with the Pirates for Archer. It would explain why he went for such a high price tag. I would venture to guess than Ortiz and Carmona were part of that package, likely along with others. When that fell through I would guess we stripped a bigger piece off the package(like maybe Peralta?) and pivoted to Schoop.
  13. Outside of specific brewers, I agree with the OP...that last hour was wild. I want to say there were maybe 4 trades before 2 pm central time that day, and we wound up with what 20 total? It seemed like every 4 or 5 minutes a new trade came through. Some very significant and not pure rentals, like Archer and Gausman. I'm so curious what it's like in Stearns office and the conference room they are likely using from 1-3 pm on deadline day. It must be friggin wild.
  14. I generally disagreed with the commentary that it was dumb for ARcia to go to 3rd. With that windup, he might have been standing on 3rd before the catcher caught the ball. The risk is extremely low, worth the "ball popping away" chance for a free run.
  15. A reminder that Chris Taylor is a fairly fast runner as well. It's not like he had all day to make that throw. Unbelievable.
  16. That was an absolutely elite play at 3b. My goodness. I've honestly been wondering why people say Moose isn't a plus or elite defender. Eye test says he's absolutely legit.
  17. Am I remembering correctly that when we got Jeffress back last year his velocity was down in the low 90s? It's been great to see that velocity consistently high. I saw this earlier, it's like cheating...good god that is wicked. For my lineup I like Cain Yelich Aguilar Braun Schoop Shaw Pina/Kratz Arcia Crazy that Shaw would bat 6th, but against a lefty it looks like clearly the best option. There's a very real chance that Shaw is ahead of Schoop for illogical reasons, this is what I'd do against a lefty though. Also possible that Aguilar gets bumped down a bit due to his struggles and Braun bats 3rd.
  18. Only downside is we don’t get to watch them....but they will get some nice rest! With the extra bench bats, guys should get occasional off days or part time days as well. I'd like to think nobody will wear out down the stretch like last season, whether we can keep pace with the Cubs is another question. I'm not convinced the Cubs got much better at the deadline, meanwhile at the very least we can adjust playing time if Moustakas or Shaw or Schoop goes through a cold stretch...raising the floor of our production. If Bryant and Darvish stay on the sidelines for most of the rest of the season, I think we have a very good chance to beat the Cubs for the division. If Bryant and Darvish were healthy, they'd still be at least a bit ahead of us. I'm hoping Hamels doesn't work out and their starting pitching continues to be sub-par.
  19. Is anyone outside of the ultra-casual fan really going to have negative feedback on Braun leaving anymore? I just don't see anyone these days saying "Well Braun is gone, so I'm not watching or going to games." Hypothetically, if the Packers were able to survive the backlash from moving on from Brett Favre after 16 seasons, I think the Brewers would do just fine if they decided to move on from Braun. People find new favorites. At the end of the day if you're winning, that pretty much takes care of everything else. That's fair, it does help that we are winning. Braun was just called up when I first started carefully tracking the team and has been my favorite player ever since...it will be a major bummer as a fan of his when he leaves. That point in time coincided with the Brewers finally getting good, so it could be similar with many other people. Letting Braun leave after his contract would be one thing, but letting him get claimed off waivers to dump his contract in the middle of a playoff race would bug me as a fan of his and as a Brewer fan. We probably won't know what the reaction is because it probably doesn't happen, just my thought.
  20. Braun is still a very good hitter when healthy. With how good the team is in general, and especially how good the outfield is...Braun helps the team more in a part time starter/ph role and playing only when he's healthy and feeling good. The team would be worse right now if we let Braun walk, but over the next 2 years we could easily buy Braun's production at a fraction of the cost.
  21. I think the bold part is right, even if it's a waiver claim/dump...I think the player can still veto the move. I'm not 100% sure on that but I also recall the Verlander thing last year and think I remember him having veto rights regardless. At this point, I'm not even sure Braun would approve a trade to the Dodgers. We are competitve and Braun wants to win, his playing time here is somewhat limited but he might not play at all in LA.
  22. From a strictly baseball/team building point of view, I think it probably makes sense to let him walk if another team claims him. But there would be significant negative feedback from fans and it may be viewed negatively in the clubhouse. If Braun leaves and ever plays elsewhere, it has to happen the right way. One other piece to this, I'm not entirely sure that Braun couldn't veto that move with his no trade rights. I know it isn't a trade, I think djoctagone might be better suited to weigh in on that piece. And one last piece, I highly doubt anyone claims him anyway...so this is probably moot for the most part.
  23. Some may, but his contract was built to spike massively in AAV for the final 3 seasons (35+ million/year) with money getting deferred from that for many years after it. He's pretty much on a 3 year, $110 million deal and as it is currently written, a lot of the money is deferred. That's a lot of money. The Brewers for example won't claim him. Many teams actually probably won't considering the luxury tax cap. I would think at least one team will though, and if so it might not be the worst idea to let him walk if they struggle over the next few weeks.
  24. I've never understood why people said moose was a bad defender. I always thought he was an elite defender at 3b
