  1. I think you can so long as you don't initiate contact. If Cruz kept running and tried to like sneak a foot in while going around the catcher i think that's fine...but I'm not certain. I didn't really see anything glaringly wrong with the play. It all happened so fast, how unusual for a catcher to need to jump to catch a high throw then come down for the tag. What led to the injury is poor sliding form from Cruz.
  2. The over 500 talk went from very unlikely to...nope...very quickly
  3. It's certainly hard to know whether the 49ers are actually involved, but they can certainly be viewed as a good fit for him. If the 49ers offered 2 3rds and a 1st next year i think that's plenty of value. All speculation, Rodgers successfully keeping himself in the headlines as long as possible.
  4. Between this and the 49ers rumored to be getting involved...I suspect the price is only going up.......
  5. The pirates have a fair amount of young talent that could get rolling at any point. The pirates have plenty of time on Reynolds so I doubt they move him. I would buy a third place finish, the over 500 part is where the question comes in. I could see the cubs and pirates in the mid 70s battling for third
  6. So you're telling me ERA isn't the only thing to look at to determine a good start? I was a bit lazy when looking at SP stats and only looked at ERA in this case. Yes agreed, not a good start.
  7. Cardinals starting pitching last I saw had over 7 ERA to start the season, 3rd worst in MLB. Naturally we face the one guy who started well right off the rip. It's early of course, but you love to see a bad start from them. Regarding the O'Neill incident, I didn't see him as running slowly and not putting in effort...many of you seem to think that is the case so maybe I saw that differently. I also agree with the consensus that the much bigger problem is calling our your player publicly like that. It's generally a problem when the 20-something is more mature and more of an adult than the manager...
  8. I saw this whole thing play out yesterday. Complete clown. O'Neill got benched for not running the bases hard enough, but watching the replay I just don't see him letting up at any point. So more or less the Cardinals manager publicly benched O'Neill and criticized him publicly for a made up reason. To make this manager look even more stupid, I'll add that O'Neill is coming off a hamstring injury and has a history of hamstring injuries. So one could certainly understand if he was only going 95 percent vs unleashing fully and risking aggravating the injury. How sad when the young player is more mature and professional than the manager...
  9. It's far more than that with additional payroll taxes and potential benefits, but I'm certainly not going to disagree that it's a huge step in the right direction. I personally don't think minor leaguers need like 70k a year or anything considering all else that teams provide, but you don't want your guys needing to tend bar on the side to make ends meat. The whole purpose of the system is training and developing. If you're a guy needing to put 20-30 hours a week into a side job, you're losing to everyone else in the minors who's putting those 20-30 hours into the weight room or fielding work or the pitching lab.
  10. Normally I'm against 99+% of ejections, but it's really hard to care in this particular case...
  11. This was tested at every MLB ballpark last year for a 2-3 week period. Not used, but tested. I have to imagine that will be expanded this year before implementation.
  12. This also only works if we can convince the Brewers to trade for Cobb to play 1b.
  13. There really isn't precedent for an elite talent to be traded in the NFL with minimal team control. Maybe looking at baseball is the answer as it happens quite often. Teams have a tendency to shell out big in prospect value for elite talents at the deadline with either 0.5 or 1.5 years of team control remaining. I certainly get the impression from comments above that sides are not close. If the Packers are just now backing off needing #13 overall AND the Jets claim the Packers are being irrational and unreasonable...that gives me the impression maybe they think he's worth like a 3rd or something and the Packers wanted #13 overall value which I think I've seen would also be comparable to getting those 2 2nds. Maybe the sides really are THAT far apart.
  14. Add fuel to the "he said she said". I think we'll all have a better feel for who is/was irrational once the trade finally gets done.
  15. Fair points. CC just said that Anderson will play a lot of RF to start the season. I wouldn't doubt him and Winker splitting starts there with Anderson also getting some 3b/1b and Winker getting some DH. Neither Winker or Anderson are average defenders out there, but they have plenty of experience and in theory their bats should play just fine. I certainly can see the value of having Frelick/Wiemer up now, they might be better short term and certainly are better long term. But the flexibility and that extra year of control can't be ignored as factors. Clearly for MA that equation spits out the answer of keep both down for a bit and try Winker/Anderson.
  16. The Brewers will literally never go into a season without some unproven bullpen arms. Most teams won't. The Dodgers have more money than the entire NL Central, yet they have a couple question marks at the back end. We certainly have more, but it's hardly a major concern to have unproven arms so long as you have at least a few reliable arms and alternative options exist at AAA(which they do). I also don't see right field unrest as an issue, considering at any time we can bring up Wiemer/Frelick among other true outfield options. In a small sample, there aren't that many difficult plays for outfielders to make...everyone on the roster could make most of the required plays with ease. Especially with the pitching we have that typically rack up strikeouts. It's just not an issue in the short term, if we're rolling a similar situation into May or even June...that's a bigger problem...but it's tough to imagine not bringing up one of the prospects by then.
  17. In this case, clearly Nestor quick pitched. That said, the batter really was dawdling in there. Imagine them getting so strict with the rules that a batter has to be in the box by 8 seconds and looking at the pitcher by 6.5 seconds. Until/Unless they get strict with it, calling this stuff is umpire discretion. I'll have a very negative view of umpires until they start checking their egos at the door and stop throwing players out of games, so I personally want to minimize the amount of umpire discretion calls. At the end of the day, please add 5-10 seconds to the pitch clock. 20 seconds feels a little too rushed. 5-10 seconds isn't going to completely erase the significant gains of having the pitch clock.
  18. Note to batters, step into the box and take your sweet time looking up at the pitcher. Step in at 8.1 seconds, don't look up until around 5. That is really limiting on the pitcher.
  19. I'm not sure what the purpose of this comment was. We shouldn't try to incrementally get better because it's a complete waste of time unless we win the world series? Every team that wins the world series, a lot has to go right to be the best team of 30. If we're truly making incremental improvements in player development, that's a positive regardless of whether it immediately turns into a world series or not.
  20. Not insisting on it doesn't necessarily mean we aren't asking for comparable value. We might not be, but I wouldn't say he conceded getting #13 value.
  21. Are we sure Rodgers on that squad will be THAT good? With 2021 Rodgers, the Jets are NOT the best team in that division. With 2022 Rodgers they might be the worst team in that division. It would be quite hilarious if the Packers bet against Rodgers and settled on the 2024 first round pick as primary comp only to have it be a top 10 pick.
  22. I'm a bit surprised the Oakland/Baltimore/Cincy/Pittsburghs of the world didn't snag him and give him everyday playing time. He's obviously very talented and maybe could figure it out if given time at the big league level. A couple really hot months toward the deadline could be a nice cheap flip. I'm thrilled to keep him in the org and give him everyday playing time at AAA.
  23. I disagree, team control, skill, upside, etc all matter. I think in this case, looking at Ke'bryan Hayes is probably the best comparable. He had a full year of service time, but last year signed an 8/70 extension. This is the largest deal ever given to a player with between 1 and 2 years service time and buys out 3 years of free agency with an option for a 4th. That's probably a much better basis point than a guy with 2+ years of data, but I also suspect is probably more than Frelick could get considering he has 0 MLB at bats and doesn't have nearly the upside of Hayes.
  24. Good info to post, but I don't think this has any bearing on Frelick. Gimenez only has 4 years of team control and actually struggled a bit early in his career. Their offensive profiles are also very very different.
  25. The biggest takeaway is reducing the cost on a 16 oz domestic beer and cocktails. The price was getting kinda silly on a beer, it's honestly still too pricey for me to buy one in the stadium but any reduction is a step in the right direction on that. Cocktails I think were like $14/15 for a single or something last year, it's still the better option because the bartenders tend to pour heavy...I tend to go the long island route and it's basically a full cup of long island mix with a splash of coke. I can only hope they didn't reduce the size AGAIN to justify a price decrease. I feel like those $4 nachos are going to be a pretty big hit, seems like the best value on that menu and it's an easy/obvious add to whatever else you're getting. The fact that there isn't much for new items is whatever, there's pretty good variety already in my opinion. I'll be interested to check out the new patio, I still find the golf simulator thing a bit weird but whatever maybe some people go to a baseball game to play the golf simulator.
