  1. How many times has Braun hung around on the roster for 3-4 days before eventually getting sent to the DL? That's just Braun, it's happened with other players. There are probably cases of nagging injuries that we don't even hear about that negatively impact players...where a DL stint would make sense to get the player right but CC apparently loves playing with a short bench and having it cost us games.
  2. I agree that Miller won't see a ton of time at SS, but assuming Arcia gets sent down when Saladino returns, I'd say it will be more like: Miller gets 50% of the starts at SS. All of them are against RHP. Miller gets 25% of starts at 2B against only RHP. Villar starts 75% of the games at 2B. Mix in Perez a little bit (so maybe Villar is more like 67% at 2B). Saladino starts 50% at SS. He faces LHP and also plays against some RHP when we have more of contact pitchers on the mound. Saladino is a replacement late in the game for Miller. Not an unreasonable plan, until Miller starts booting mildly difficult plays at SS and CC realizes he's not a SS. Also, probably factor in a likely DL stint for Shaw and Miller might see more time at 3B.
  3. I was at the game and some general observations. Peralta initially was working more fastball heavy but ended up throwing a ton of curves...especially to Perez. It was comical how far in front of the curve they were, either they read a scouting report that said he threw 90% fastballs...or they couldn't pick up the spin out of his hand. Either way, it was pretty clear hitters were generally cheating on the fastball. Miller didn't have a single challenging play all game, and his bat so far is better than expected. If he keeps playing at SS, he will inevitably get some tough chances and we'll see how he handles those. Maybe part of the reasoning for putting him in today was Peralta pitching...a high K and generally fly ball pitcher. You wouldn't want him in there with Chacin starting. Other hitters, Braun's approach is very good right now. Much better than early in the season. I would guess he'll be over 800 ops on the season by end of July. I found it a bit comical that the KC LF was playing 2-3 steps in for Yelich, considering he hit an oppo hr that game and 2 in the last 3 games. I really like Braun 2 and Yelich 3 with Cain out of the lineup. Even if Shaw gets back in there, a lineup of Thames, Braun, Yelich, Shaw, Aguilar in the top 5 is very good. That said, it was pretty clear yesterday that the bottom part of the lineup is very weak. Villar/Pina were minimally productive against very mediocre pitching. By the 3rd time through, I felt like paying attention to the bottom 3 hitters was a waste of time. Nothing good could happen until the top of the order came up. We'll have to remedy that.
  4. How about this for downside. Shaw misses 3 games, convinces CC/medical staff/himself into thinking he's ready to play when he's not, tweaks his already weakened wrist again in his first game back and hits the DL for longer than he otherwise might have. And that doesn't even consider we may lose a game because we are short a bench player. Wrists are tricky, and you'd think CC/Stearns would have learned their lesson the first dozen times they've gone with the "wait and see" approach and had it cost them. Beyond frustrating.
  5. I'm hesitant to give up even one of Burnes or Peralta for Machado, that probably means it doesn't happen for us but so be it. That's far too short-sighted. The thought of plugging him into the 3 hole of the lineup playing SS is quite insane though. That lineup would be a serious force.
  6. I think Arcia should go down for regular at bats. Sogard should be cut at some point in July, either for Arcia or for a trade deadline target.
  7. I don't think it matters much whether he plays in AA or AAA, his bat is pretty clearly ready for MLB pitching. It's more about service time and reps at 2b that he's in the minors right now. There's a chance he comes up to PH in September, but more likely is May or June for service time reasons.
  8. Sogard has a higher than average line drive percentage. He's not completely lost. I'm not knocking Saladino who was swinging it very well in under 40 plate appearances. But he hasn't played in over a month, and he's a guy who hit .178/.254/.229 in a not so small sample last season. So you don't know what you'll get from him when he returns. I do agree that Saladino's a better defensive SS than Sogard, but Sogard's passable. I just think some are overreacting to Saladino's offensive burst in a very small sample. The solution to the issue at SS is to trade for an established guy, and there's certainly names out there. I agree with a lot of this. Based on the eye test, Sogard his lining out an awful lot. All you can ask of a guy like Sogard is to hit the ball hard. He's doing it and still getting out fairly often, that will inevitably change. Even with noting that, I prefer Saladino for the defense. I don't think anyone expects Saladino to post 900 ops upon his return. But he did enough before his injury to earn a look upon his return. Even if Saladino looks pretty good in his first couple weeks back, I could see moving Sogard for an established SS rental and working a timeshare of sorts. Villar might lose a couple starts at 2b in this scenario, but you could easily get 3 guys plenty of playing time at 2 spots.
  9. One thing you can say about Saladino that you can't about Sogard...Saladino is a solid defender, much better than Sogard. If over 1000 PA they project to hit the same, it's a no brainer that you'd want the better defender. Especially when said better defender is currently hitting better. Now if Saladino comes back and struggles over the first couple weeks, he can be replaced at the deadline. I don't expect struggling players to maintain roster spots at the end of July.
  10. Ahh Yuni B, the shortstop with lateral range no wider than a bowling alley. While we're at it...let's bring back Dave Bush. He's had previous postseason success with the Brewers.
  11. I would argue that k rate is very important when considering a leadoff guy. Which for me, rules out some of those guys. Often you'll have the pitcher bunting a guy over and have guys on 2nd, 3rd, or both. You don't want someone that strikes out close to 30% of the time up there. As far as targets, SP and a rental that plays a good SS. I'm not sure how much longer Suter, Guerra, and Chacin can keep putting up solid starts. At best, those guys are back end starters. We should definitely explore the SP market, but at the same time I'm not willing to trade Hiura...so that likely limits the ceiling of what we can obtain. The SS rental piece should be very cheap in prospects, I'm assuming we won't be targeting Machado
  12. So the Cubs have 4 bullpen pitchers on the DL right now and 1 starter. But please cubs fans, remind me how having depth options is pointless. All that matters is having the best 25 man roster on paper to start the season. That strategy is what leads to 4 game sweeps by last place teams because half your bullpen is AAAA caliber. I know some of them have good ERA's, but those are not supported by peripheral stats and won't last long(also partially a product of elite defense) I was very critical of CC trying to be overly efficient with the bullpen over the weekend, especially yesterday. That said, one thing CC tries to do is give his bullpen arms offdays and ample rest. Once in a while, we blow a game. That's a better result than having a guy pitch a 3rd consecutive day and wind up on the 10 day DL as happened to the Cubs over the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if their fans were saying "if we weren't so unlucky with injuries", except that even with the injuries they've had...they have been lucky with injuries. They could be the Dodgers and have 2-3 starters consistently injured including their Ace, or the Nationals and have half their lineup miss half the season(Eaton, Murphy, Rendon, Zimmerman). Bottom line, I'm happy we have the depth we do...it helps being able to rotate arms out and have capable options to fill in at most positions in the event of injury...which we've had plenty. Hopefully we can make some deadline additions and make a more serious run at playoffs this year.
  13. One thing about AA, at least Biloxi's home park, wind coming off the ocean is blowing in from RF...and that's fairly common. That's part of why you tend to see suppressed scores out of AA, and sometimes you'll see significant home/road splits in AA. I went to a game that Jungmann was starting a couple years ago. In any other park he probably gives up 8-10 runs but the wind kept in so many deep fly balls. Obviously this is going to impact LH power more, but as we've seen from the spray chart Hiura goes oppo quite a bit.
  14. He's having a bit of growing pains at high a thusfar. He'll be alright though. There are only so many guys like Hiura that rake immediately at every stop.
  15. I'm not sure I'd want Ramos at all actually. His defense is dreadful this year. More PB than he rightfully should have at this point, and 12% CS...the bat looks good but I'm not interested in sacrificing that much defense. I don't see how he'd be a significant upgrade over Kratz, and you definitely don't want such a poor defender starting 3 or 4 times a week.
  16. The Brewers really need to bank some wins before the all-star break considering the schedule. We face a lot of very bad teams, and the 2 series we have against stronger teams are at home.
  17. Perez, absolutely. The only position that Perez bat plays well enough to be a regular is pitcher. Thames, I think you can live with subpar defense when he's hitting well. Though it absolutely makes sense to bring up a plus defender in the outfield for the bench to fill in late in games. Hopefully that's the move. Get Aguilar a bit more time at 3b and Braun in the lineup a bit more in LF.
  18. I think he's absolutely ready for AAA, but I could see him sticking in AA as Biloxi is likely to make the playoffs I believe. Plus, we have a good group of position players in AA right now. I honestly don't think it matters much where he plays. The bat is MLB ready. His time in the minor leagues is more about reps at 2b and service time than anything else.
  19. I like Barnhart, and I actually think he's underrated offensively. That said, the team control and within division makes a trade unlikely. The Reds have no reason to move him unless they are getting a really good offer.
  20. Agreed, I don't mind Broxton or Phillips temporarily...assuming Shaw hits the DL. Santana I prefer get regular atbats for a few weeks minimum to try and get right. I view both of those guys as defense first outfielders at the moment, PH/late inning defensive replacement types...thats all. With Keon you get a plus runner off the bench as well.
  21. I'm not sure why a game in June would impact ordering tickets to a game at the end of July...
  22. This is one of my greatest frustrations with CC. I actually criticize Maddon in the opposite direction for overmanaging his bullpen...CC is awful in the opposite direction. He gets too caught up trying to be overly efficient with his bullpen...and it's especially bad today with an off day tomorrow and a generally rested bullpen. I guarantee the Cubs would have gone to the bullpen sooner and had a better chance of staying in the game. It's obviously to everyone on the field that Chacin doesn't have it today...it's been obvious since the 1st inning.
  23. This lineup stinks, we already lost Shaw and don't have Cain available. If Aguilar isn't going to be used we have Manny Pina and Eric 'Toots' Sogard off the bench. Obviously, hope you're right but I don't see us coming up with 7 runs today. Putting Chacin back in is basically waving the white flag. And I really don't get it, 4 runs isn't impossible against bad pitching. Dreadful managing right here...
  24. I doubt Santana comes back so quickly. I think it's more likely we see Phillips or Broxton than Santana.
  25. This game isn't over, we are making Weaver work and the cardinal bullpen is pretty bad. We need to go to the bullpen though, we really should have after carpenters single. Pen is in ok shape and we have an offday tomorrow. We can blow through most of it
