  1. Imo Urias was brought in for only one purpose, to be the starting SS. Arcia was the worst offensive SS in baseball 2 years in a row and the position needed an upgrade. Urias would be one of the worst offensive 3B and paired with the worst offensive SS, it would be disaster for the Crew. I truly believe Stearns will get a 3B once Donaldson signs somewhere and they make a decision on Bryant. You make all good points and I almost completely agree...I think you and many others are underestimating the upside of Urias. At least that's the sense I get from this post and many others. Urias is certainly capable of being a 300 hitter. He'll lack the power you want at 3b without question, but the offensive production could be decent at 3b if he starts to figure it out at the MLB level. And everything about his profile indicates he will, and very soon. All that said, I completely agree you don't want him starting at 3b. Even if he hits 300, his offensive production won't quite be what you want at 3b. It would be monstrous at SS, but maybe average at best at 3b. And I especially liked your point about Stearns making his move once Donaldson/Bryant get settled. I'm guessing we're at least a couple weeks away from that.
  2. I hope we bring him in on a minor league deal, just so we can see Cubs fans get all self-righteous and critical of the move. Maybe this should be in blue, I'm not sure.
  3. I don't mean to be that guy, but I think the Dodgers get significantly more than anyone else. I think last I saw they were getting almost double the tv revenue that the Yankees get. I agree with your general point completely, even for the Yankees...but I think it's compounded that much more for the Dodgers. I've always found it a bit ridiculous scrolling through Cubs forums and listening to them being upset that they aren't signing every FA as if they can afford a half a billion dollar payroll(spoiler, the Cubs are already resigning Bryant in FA after trading him for a massive prospect haul AND signing Betts)...but maybe they are on to something to a degree. I think the next set of labor negotiations is going to be extremely nasty. It's always tough in that it's a 3 sided duel. Small markets vs Large markets vs Players.
  4. Shhhhh, stop making sense. He's still busy commending the Padres for signing Hosmer 2 years ago.
  5. I don't understand why people are so down on the lineup. 6-8 is really not as bad as the debbie downers are making it seem. Some added notes, 4-6 are virtually interchangeable...being a big balance guy, I'd probably try not having Narvaez and Smoak hit back to back, so for me maybe I go Smoak/Braun/Narvaez. Mystery 3b could easily move up the order. In the unlikely event we get Donaldson, he'd bat 3 or 4 obviously. Kyle Seager probably would get lumped in to the 4-6 group, making it a 4-7 group. I also like that we have a Cain backup plan, if he's not hitting well enough to lead off...we can try Urias or Sogard at the top of the order. In regards to specifically 6-8, it looks not great now because 3b isn't filled yet. I would be shocked if we didn't add someone. Healy is more of an AAA guy to improve defense and come up at first injury. I doubt the plan is to have Sogard/Arcia/Urias split time at 3b/ss. So overall you have to take the bottom of the order with a grain of salt for now as it's not complete. But Narvaez will be a very good 6th hitter, and Urias I think will be excellent hitting 8th with his pitch recognition and big time upside if the talent eventually translates to MLB success. Cain Yelich Hiura Braun/Garcia Smoak Narvaez Mystery 3b Urias/Arcia P
  6. My biggest problem with this article is this guy criticizing the Brewers specifically for not going nuts on upgrades. There were maybe 4-5 game changing free agents, and another 12-15 very good free agents available...and 30 teams looking to improve. There's a pretty significant dropoff after that. He's also ignoring that we gave 2 very lucrative 1 year deals last year, which were parlayed into about $140 million combined for the 2 players...and the signing of Cain for $80 million(the 5th largest contract that offseason) and trade for Yelich $45 million in payroll. Over the last 2 offseasons, we were pretty much the only team not operating by the same playbook as everyone else of cutting back on spending. I find the Brewers to be an incredibly weird(stupid) choice of team to criticize in an article like this. You have the Pirates and Marlins that are just always bad and spend next to nothing in much bigger markets...much better targets.
  7. If you're curious, take a look at what the Rays, Royals, and Reds are getting in their TV deals. We probably will be closest to the Royals, which average around $50-60 million per year I believe. The Rays I believe are averaging $80 million. The added tv revenue will certainly be a nice boost, but a $20 million increase doesn't mean an extra $20 million all to payroll. For starters, it might(probably) gradually increase and not immediately jump from $30 to $50 overnight. Second off, plenty of that will probably get allocated to other things...a $10 million increase in tv revenue might allow for an extra $5-6 million for payroll. I think I read that players get something like 55% of baseball revenue, so that would be a logical chunk to allocate to payroll. Also with payroll dollars comes taxes and benefits.
  8. They said operating income, not revenue...big difference. I would make an extremely hefty bet that the Brewers were absolutely not in the top 1/3 of teams in operating income, more likely the bottom 1/3. We'll never know for sure of course. It's very realistically possible for us to be ahead of certain high payroll teams in operating income...notably the Red Sox that had a top payroll but missed the playoffs. With our record payroll, not hosting a playoff game, and under 3 million fans without drastic ticket price increases...I'm not buying a top 1/3 operating income.
  9. Boo the automated strike zone. Gone forever would be guys getting tossed out of games on a close/bad strike 3 call and going on tirades against the home plate umpire.
  10. In my opinion, by far the most appealing path to the Superbowl is a 1 seed and a Vikings win over Seattle in the first round. We would then face the Vikings in Lambeau, and the winner of New Orleans vs SF/Phil...most likely to be New Orleans. That game would be in Lambeau though, so now you have a 40 year old qb playing in bad weather. It's certainly not an easy path, as you've noted all these teams are pretty darn good...but I would take this path every time over facing the NFC West twice.
  11. Agreed on home field and a bye being critical. I think you can really nerf the saints quite a bit if the game is played at Lambeau...hopefully in snow or sub 20 degree temps. 38+ year old qbs not named Tom Brady do not fare well in bad weather. That team shrinks up immediately if Brees doesn't play like a top 3 overall QB on a given night. Their defense is still very good, so a game in Lambeau probably becomes a low scoring slugfest...but at least we'd have a fighting chance in that game. SF if we face them will be tough no matter what. We probably need the o-line to have the game of their life, and a few breaks from the refs...to have a real shot in that one.
  12. I really don't see any team going bananas enough to trade for either guy, but what does a Clevinger + Lindor trade to the Dodgers look like anyways? Dodgers get - Lindor, Clevinger Indians get - Lux, Ruiz, May, Muncy, Gonsolin Is that enough? I really have no idea.
  13. Welcome to the board. I think your proposals might be a touch light, at least some of them. For starters, Braun has said he'd only accept a trade to the Dodgers. Lux would be fine, Stripling/Turner/cash would not work for me...regardless of how much cash. Syndergaard and Familia is a lot close than Smith/Matz...especially now that we've added a LH 1b.
  14. Depth chart for relievers looks something like Hader Knebel Suter Claudio Peralta Black Faria D Williams Wahl Burnes Beyond those 10, we take a considerable jump back to Taylor Williams and other minor leaguers. Also Burnes/Peralta could factor into the rotation. Only the top 4 of the above are locked into spots, the rest I believe have options. I think adding another arm would certainly make sense, I think one good one would be enough...preferably one tough on RH hitters.
  15. I suspect a number of you are way ahead of me on this, but I was playing around on the espn playoff machine yesterday looking at our playoff seeding situation. 1 seed - we win out and Seattle wins 2 seed - we win out and SF wins, or we win one of two and NO loses next week. 3 seed - we win either of the next 2 games, or we lose both and Minnesota loses week 17 to Chicago. 6 seed - we lose both of our next 2 games and Minnesota wins both. The only matchup I truly dread is going back to SF. I don't love the idea of going to NO, but at least it's a dome stadium and Rodgers should have a chance in that type of venue. The playoffs will be a bit annoying no matter what. If we get the 1 seed, SF would be the 5 seed and promptly destroy Philly...and I assume NO would beat Minn. So we'd have to face SF and one of Seattle/NO...if we can even get by SF. A 2 seed means NO at home and probably SF on the road. 3 seed means Minn at home, NO on the road, and NFC west on the road. If we get the 6 seed, I'm just going to mentally forfeit the season. No way can we run that. It's certainly not going to be easy, but these scenarios show how critical that 1 seed is for our chances.
  16. You can't really believe the Yankees would part with Torres and a prospect for Hader and Arcia. They would laugh themselves silly if the Brewers offered that. Torres is going to play SS the way it looks and he is just about the last Yankee they would trade. It's more feasible than you are implying, but I agree I doubt that trade would happen. I think they'd be more inclined to push other players like Andujar primarily. Primary point there is the Yankees definitely have value players that we could target for Hader, and a deal is doable.
  17. For starters, the Yankees definitely have the pieces to swing a trade. Could certainly see a hader+arcia for torres+. They have prospects they can add to andujar to entice Stearns as well. I suppose they could also send back a guy like green, though I'm not sure that makes sense. I really don't want to trade with the Yankees though. Best case scenario, we make an equal value trade. No chance of swindling him like dipoto or dombrowski or other bad gms. And I don't think I want to trade hader unless I'm getting a big overpay. I think there's been too much smoke on this for it to be a fabrication. I would bet these guys have talked extensively on a number of different hader trades. Will be very curious if it happens but I'm definitely rooting against it
  18. Well no, not for 4M. But they could have tendered him for probably 5-6M to return regardless of what he wanted. I guess I should have specified that once we non tendered him, he was gone. You're absolutely correct we could have tendered him a contract for a bit more. I just got to thinking, I wonder where he'll play. Last I heard they have a decent 3b prospect they were going to give most of the playing time to, and then biggio at 2b. I'm not sure youd want 2018 Shaw's stat line at 1b...overall a curious move.
  19. The blue Jays might just be able to make things interesting in their division, if their young talent continues to break out.
  20. Just a reminder, Shaw wanted a fresh start. He did not want to come back to Milwaukee. The option to pay Shaw 4 million to play 1b instead of smoak did not exist because Shaw made very clear that he didn't want to be back.
  21. This is the type of deal I expected Stearns to go for this offseason. That said, I've been extremely anti-keuchel for a long time. I simply don't believe he's a good pitcher. I feel like for some unexplainable reason, he's been able to get hitters to chase his mediocre stuff...and it's led to stretches of success. I know my opinion is a minority one. The point here, despite this being a tier i thought we'd target... I'm glad we passed on keuchel at any realistic price

  23. Does that mean he totals at $800k for 175 IP? Or do those add up, so he'd get an additional $2m for 175 IP?

  25. Smoak wRC+ from 2017-2019 is 128. Just below Jose Abreu, Mitch Haniger, Charlie Blackmon, and Kris Bryant...just above Nick Castellanos, Justin Upton, Aaron Hicks. During that same period, Moose had 110 and Garcia had 117.
