  1. That’s not true. His contract ran through this year regardless. He just forfeited his pay for the year he sat out.
  2. You have to take the shortened spring training into account. The pitchers didn’t get as many outings as usual to build up to a 5 day rotation. I suspect things will change eventually.
  3. I don’t think we’re disagreeing on that. But I don’t think I would hold out Peterson’s routine fly ball as an example of hitting in tough luck. It was a ball hit maybe 300 feet exactly in the area where the defense would expect him to hit.
  4. I understand that, but with some of these advanced stats I wonder how well they take into account modern defensive placement. As soon as Peterson hit that ball my immediate reaction was that it was an easy out because the outfield would be shading him to left center. My initial comment about not putting the ball in play with the bases loaded was obviously directed at Cain. At least a ball hit like Peterson’s with less than two out would produce a run.
  5. Because the Brewers are still using a 6 day rotation, which means they use 6 starters if they have games on 6 straight days.
  6. When they change the game to “who hits the ball hardest” I will care more about these things. But, I’m old fashioned, and a ball like Peterson’s looks like a sharply hit easy out.
  7. And not being able to put the ball in play with the bases loaded.
  8. I don’t think there would be much doubt that Cain is the last position player on the team that you’d want up with the bases loaded.
  9. There are other rules that may seem stupid and archaic, but my counter would be why should you reward a pitcher if he can’t throw a pitch that the catcher can catch or the catcher if he can’t catch a strike.
  10. That could easily have been called a 3 shot foul.
  11. This is the kind of game where I was afraid Middleton’s absence would kill the Bucks. In close games down the stretch he could be a go to option to make the big shot and clutch free throws.
  12. As I've said several times, my benchmark for Yelich is the one we saw in 2018 up to the All Star break. In 82 games his line was .293/.364/.459/823. He had 11 HR, on pace for about 22.I don't think anyone saw the MVP Yelich of the second half of 2018 and 2019 until the kneecap incident coming. He was actually tailing off slightly in the second half of 2019 (especially the HR pace), but he still produced an OPS over 1.000 in the second half). In his last 14 games Yelich's line is .302/.356/.509/.865 with 3 HR. And, as others have pointed out, he is hitting the ball hard, not just getting hits on bloopers and seeing eye grounders. I'm pretty sure Yelich hasn't had a 2 week stretch even close to this since 2019. If this is representative of what he's going to do the rest of the way (and we know he is capable of it) the boost to the Brewers offense would be huge. ?
  13. I’m partial to the Braves uniforms of the 50’s. They are classics and a reminder of my childhood.
  14. Not only was I not sure he would beat it out, I wasn’t sure he would survive it without a pulled hamstring.
  15. Yelich with 3 more hard hit balls tonight. McCutchen shows that hitting the ball out of the infield isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
  16. Adames helped the pitcher out on that 2-0 pitch but it didn’t end up hurting him.
  17. I hate seeing those liners off the pitchers’ feet. First Woodruff last week and now this one.
  18. Tellez has now driven in 6 of the 8 runs the Brewers have scored in their last 4 plus games against the Braves.
  19. In the Optimism thread it is pointed out that the Brewers have a very favorable, home heavy schedule to end the season, with 20 of the last 26 games at home. There has to be a counterbalance to that somewhere, and that comes in the next 6 weeks with three, 3 city road trips sandwiched around two, 2 series home stands. That means that 28 of the next 41 games are on the road and, as pointed out several of those series are against playoff contenders. We'll learn a lot more about this team as it goes through this stretch.
  20. My lasting memory of Chavez came during his rookie year with the Pirates in 2008. In the last week of the season he entered in the 10th inning of a game against the Brewers and surrendered a walk off grand slam to Ryan Braun as the Brewers continued their push for a wild card spot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSPNC7NXJPA
  21. As bad as the Reds were expected to be, you do have to recognize that they are that much worse because of the injuries and COVID absences.
  22. The concern would be that his next outing comes with a one run lead and he’s wild because of lack of work. I think something like that happened last year when the Brewers had that stretch in June where they piled up runs against the Rockies, Pirates, and Cubs and Hader didn’t see much action. He followed that up with his worst week of the season against the Mets and Reds.
  23. I have mixed feelings about sitting Hader down when he hasn’t pitched in over a week. He’s close to (if not beyond) that point where a manager might be putting the ace reliever in just to get some work.
  24. 4 smoked drives for Yelich today. No comment beyond that.
