  1. I don’t get this batting order. If you have Wong, Adames, and Urias available, why put a slow, bases clogger like Vogelbach second? I would think something like Urias second with Vogelbach seventh would make more sense. With nobody resting, I would go: Wong, Urias, Yelich, Garcia, Narvaez, Adames, Vogelbach, Bradley, Pitcher, or something similar.
  2. I don’t think it’s a bigger issue, but it is an issue. It will be a bigger issue than it is now if Woodrfuff and Burnes start delivering short starts on a regular basis.
  3. I’ve been away from the game until now because we had our daughters over for Father’s Day. I tune in just in time to see the 4th HR of the inning.
  4. The top 4 in the order produce 2 runs, but #5 puts an end to that rally. The 2 run lead may not last through the first inning and the Brewers have to wait until at least the third to counter.
  5. Ultimate test of the 1-inning Hader rule... Looks like it’s going to be Devin Williams in the 10th, so we have the unfortunate but predictable answer to that question. Is it really worth throwing Hader out there for another inning of a tie game. Even if they get out of the 10th they’ll have Narvaez on second to start the 11th and not much chance of scoring then either.
  6. The “bum of the month” performs as expected. Here’s where my “runs on demand” theory gets tested. If the Rockies score off Hader, a sweep of the series would be looking pretty likely.
  7. If Peterson either hits into a DP or takes a third strike I’m going to lose it.
  8. This series has the feel of those frequent 4 and 5 game sweeps in Pittsburgh when the opponent essentially scores runs on demand.
  9. On my Spectrum channel lineup, the lead Bally Sports Wisconsin channel is 31 or 1309. 1310 is a second Bally channel that sometimes has Brewers games when there is a conflict, like the Bucks and Brewers playing at the same time. But, even if the Bucks figure out a way not to lay down and die in Brooklyn, there shouldn’t be any more of those conflicts this season because the remaining playoff games are on national networks.
  10. Maybe in addition to spin rate, changing the feel of a pitcher’s grip will adversely affect his command on location.
  11. The Brewers don’t even get a lot of hits when they win. I think it was 5 on Sunday, but they were bunched up enough and included 4 XBH so they got 5 runs even with a stretch of 15 retired in a row by a pitcher with an ERA around 8. I think they were outhit in the 10 game stretch in which they went 9-1. Almost perfect pitching and scoring on walks and HRs is not a sustainable formula for success.
  12. Hosmer ties with with a bomb. Reds pen is going to be their Achilles Heel, regardless of how good they looked against the Brewers. Probably not enough of an Achilles Heel to keep them behind the Brewers.
  13. Reds score 4 in the ninth off Melancon to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead. The Brewers won’t be ahead of them for long.
  14. One bright spot tonight. The Brewers have kept their 69 game hitting streak alive.
  15. This is going to be a pretty telling road trip for the Brewers as they play two generally bad teams with pretty extraordinary home-road splits. The DBacks splits aren’t quite as dramatic as the Rockies, but they are 9-30 on the road, losing the last 22 in a row, including the 4 to the Brewers. Not surprisingly, the Rockies are scoring almost 6 runs a game at home, so we can’t expect the Brewers to go in there and win 2-1 games. But you have to wonder about the Brewers ability to score enough even in a friendly environment against suspect pitching to compete with a good offense. So far, the Brewers season has been pretty sharply divided into 3 segments of 3-4 weeks each. First was the 17-10 start, then the 4-13 slide that dropped them below .500, and then the spurt that pushed them to 38-27 before the 3 game sweep by the Reds. The question now is whether the Reds series was just a blip in the midst of a generally good stretch or the start of another skid that will send them back below .500. Seeing the offense go completely silent against some decent, but not generally great, pitchers is not a positive sign. Neither would another road series like the one in Philadelphia in May.
  16. I wouldn’t call the Reds a lesser team. Their recent performances suggest that their pitching is rounding into shape after an awful start, and they have a potent lineup. They figure to be in the division race until the end and I’m not sure you can say that about the Brewers.
  17. Three game totals for the Reds “bad” bullpen: 8 IP, 0 ER, 3H, 15K.
