  1. In the 3 games of lower spin rates burnes has pitched 17 innings and given up 18 hits with 5 walks. He has given up 3 runs and struck out 28. Those are still incredibly good numbers. Yesterday's problem was missing the zone too. I guess that could be because guys didn't chance pitches due to spin stuff. All that to say I doubt it cause our pitchers to stink. Maybe just not be otherworldly. Burnes bigger problem early in the game on Saturday was softly hit balls falling in for hits or being misplayed. That forced him to throw a lot of high stress pitches early in the game and led eventually to his early departure. Maybe lower spin will peoduce fewer swings and misses and more soft contact but not necessarily dramatic changes in runs. Maybe the result of this will be fewer strikeouts but n
  2. A significant part of my frustration is throwing the 5th and 6th starters (both generic LHP) on consecutive nights against a hard hitting contender for the division title. This is the Brewers 3rd series against the Reds and they won’t be facing Woodruff or Burnes in any of them. They will be seeing Peralta for the third time tomorrow. Pitching Anderson against them again after they chased him early last week may not be a guaranteed loss, but it is a virtual guarantee that the Reds will be putting early runs on the board and be getting into the Brewers bullpen by the 4th or 5th inning. The Brewers offense is not well suited to keep up with that. Rather than religiously going with a 6 day rotation there might have been a way to get Woodruff and/or Burnes in against the Reds while splitting up Anderson and Lauer and getting them into more games against weaker hitting non division opponents like the Rockies or DBacks. I haven’t tried to map out the starters for the rest of the month in part because that can be altered by minor injuries and postponements anyway. But if Anderson and Lauer pitch back to back against the Cubs in two weeks I might lose it.
  3. The Brewers are 6-4 when Anderson starts. That is true, but most of that is a result of either a lot of run support and/or outstanding bullpen work behind him. In his 10 starts he’s only gone past the 5th inning once, and he hasn’t made it as far as the 5th inning in half of them. So, maybe the way to say it is that when Anderson starts, the Brewers have to hope that he can minimize the damage in the couple of innings he pitches, have the bullpen be near perfect for 4-6 innings, and hope the offense can score enough to cover the runs he gave up. The chances that he will give them 6 solid innings are next to zero. The only time he did that this year was against the weak hitting Pirates after being handed a 7 run lead in the first two innings. Throwing him against a hot hitting Reds team for the second time in a week is not a formula for success unless the Brewers can get to Castillo, something they couldn’t do last week. I’m expecting to see Richards no later than the fourth inning, hopefully with the Brewers still within striking distance. Meanwhile, the Brewers are 1-4 in Lauer’s starts, including, to be fair, one in which he pitched well. But, if I am looking at this right, starts by Anderson and Lauer have accounted for the Brewers last 4 losses.
  4. Now we get to look forward to watching Anderson against this lineup while the Brewers face Castillo who is coming off back to back strong outings, including one against the Brewers.
  5. But when Lauer and Anderson start it isn’t surprising. If the Brewers don’t come back tonight, their last 3 losses will be games started by Anderson or Lauer in which they put the team in an early hole.
  6. This is the result of how much Hader and Williams pitched over the weekend. They’d probably like to give Boxberger a day off too, so they’re going to try to get through this game with the pitching C team.
  7. If the Brewers are really going to use a 6 man rotation until the All Star break they’re going to have to win 60% of the other guys’ starts just to go.500.
  8. With the top end of the bullpen unavailable, this might be a “take one for the club” concession game. Need to save the better long relievers to cover for Anderson tomorrow. I’m guessing we’ll be seeing Weigel before Richards. Weigel was optioned to make room for Strickland Didn’t hear that. Then might as well throw Strickland in there and see what he can do in a low leverage situation. There was no reason to think Lauer was going to hold the Reds down after he got bombed by the Tigers two weeks ago.
  9. With the top end of the bullpen unavailable, this might be a “take one for the club” concession game. Need to save the better long relievers to cover for Anderson tomorrow. I’m guessing we’ll be seeing Weigel before Richards.
  10. I wonder what the plan will be if the Brewers have a small lead going into the late innings. I assume that Hader is unavailable after pitching 3 days in a row and I would think they’d like to stay away from Williams going for a third straight day. Boxberger might be held back to be the closer if the Brewers take a lead into the ninth. I expect to be seeing 2 or 3 of Yardley, Richards, Weigel, and Milner tonight. The offense needs to do more against Gutierrez than it did last week to give the Crew a fighting chance.
  11. And yet, they keep tossing you W’s. Enjoy it every once in awhile. Amen I’m enjoying the wins, but if I’m going to spend 3 1/2 hours at a ballgame, I find it more fun to look forward to seeing hitters who I think have a realistic chance of providing some action. I think a large part of it is that the slow pace of the games these days makes it less enjoyable to attend games in person. The pace is less important when I’m at home and can keep track of the game while doing other things. In the late 70’s and early 80’s I attended about half of the home games. Now, going to 10-15 a year is plenty to satisfy me. So, yeah, I guess the suggestions that I’m not a good fan are warranted.
  12. Yelich bobblehead day Exactly, I am here right now and lots of kids very excited. I was at the game too. It is understandable that people were excited to see Yelich come up once after the dreary 15 up, 15 down from the first through the fifth. That batting order with Peterson batting fifth through the pitcher’s spot does not generate much in the way of hope, much less expectation and excitement.
  13. It certainly is going to limit options in the bullpen tomorrow with Hader pitching the last 3 days and Williams the last two. The Nashville shuttle may be working overtime if Lauer and Anderson have short, ineffective starts.
  14. Yep, we get to see the B team today. No Yelich and no Narvaez, and the clincher, Jace Peterson batting 5th.
  15. Today will be our second game this season before they resume our normal 10 pack schedule with the full opening. A bum righty on the mound for the Bucs so I’ll be doubly disappointed if today is Yelich’s scheduled off day, which I suspect it will be.
  16. It's a game thread and the game wasn't going well early. Really not surprising that people were frustrated in a game that we were losing 4-0. I'm sure some comments were a little overreactionary, but just scanning through quick it doesn't even seem that bad at all. It's not like people were saying we suck and are a fluke. Really seems in poor taste to not have any involvement in the GT and then just show up 8 hours after the fact just to call out fellow posters for "dumb comments". Exactly. Most of the comments I make on game threads are things I would be saying to my daughters (who are adults) if we were sitting at the game. The biggest difference is that things I say at the game may include some expletives that I leave out of posts. For example, a comment like “Take your time covering the bag Robertson” would definitely have a few more words. We’re going to our second game of the year today. The first one was the infamous 10-9 game against the Braves in May. When the Brewers started to blow that 8-0 lead with walks, wild pitches, and errors, I made the comment “Now here comes Freddie Freeman to hit a grand slam homer”, which was obviously a frustrated articulation of how things were going. In some cases those worst fears are realized.
  17. I just saw that Counsell will be skipping tomorrow’s game to attend his son’s graduation from Whitefish Bay High School.
  18. The Cardinals pitching is really a problem for them.
  19. More games like this and the Brewers are going to have to go with a 10 man bullpen to go with the 6 man rotation.
  20. Even if he catches it, it’s encouraging to see Yelich hit the ball with some authority to left, and it would have gotten a run in. Agree, and not taking anything away from Yelich at all but Tom seems to make everything hit to left look like an adventure. You mean he isn’t as smooth as Peterson in right?
  21. The longest 9 inning regular season MLB history is 4:45 and this game is on pace to challenge that. The pace has to pick up, right?
