  1. Hopefully the Brewers lack of offense can be explained by facing high end pitchers. They needed help in the form of errors, a bases loaded walk, and the extra inning free runner to score on Thursday (just one earned run) and then nothing today. Seeing all of the strikeouts, especially from Yelich and Hiura, is really disheartening. I’m looking for some signs that last year was a fluke.
  2. I was almost hoping for Burnes to give up a 2 out hit. I don’t see any way he’s going to go 9 innings in his first start of the year, but I’m afraid there will be a temptation to leave him in too long.
  3. When I looked at the lineup the other day, it occurred to me that it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch that the Brewers offense could be improved at every one of the 8 fielding positions, and in some cases by significant amounts. I feel a lot better about the offense than I did with the assortment of journeymen that they loaded on the roster last year. Even with the schedule being tougher as they move out of the Central Divisions, if they could finish close to .500 with that offense, they can easily be in contention this season in a division with no obvious powerhouse. That’s about as optimistic as I will get.
  4. But the postponement does line up Hendricks to start Game 1 of an NLDS series now ... methinks shenanigans are afoot. I hope the Marlins put up a 15-spot tomorrow. I’m pretty sure the league, not the home team, decides whether or not to play a playoff game. My “conspiracy theory” is that the league wanted to make sure they have at least one prime time game with a big market team tomorrow. If the series goes to Saturday, all the better. Why waste a Cubs game on a Thursday afternoon?
  5. That should finally put to rest the “controversy” over Williams not being thrown into the third inning on Sunday. He presumably was unavailable then.
  6. On short rest? I think it will be a bullpen game on Wednesday and then Woody game 2. That’s what I would do.
  7. That umpire was doing that all game. Looked like he had a plane to catch.
  8. I forgot that the NL playoffs don’t start until Wednesday so makes sense to give him some work.
  9. I heard him once. That is really embarrassing and unprofessional.
  10. 8 big games in the final week and the Brewers manage a total of 18 runs, and several of those were garbage runs in the ninth inning of lost games.
  11. For as far below expectations that Garcia has been performed, the worst has been providing no HR power. His past record suggests that he could have at least provided more than at least 5 HRs.
  12. Astros are going to make the playoffs at 29-31 unless they make a big comeback, and they talked on TV about the 81 KC Royals being under .500 for the whole season when they won the second half title to get into a division series. The bottom line is that screwed up seasons produce screwed up results.
  13. BTW, I’m going on the record as not criticizing the Padres if they let this lead get away. They have gone above and beyond this weekend with the two wins, including a ninth inning comeback. I’m specifically not going to blame them if they have a save situation in the ninth and don’t use Rosenthal. They had him ready with a one run lead last night, and sent him in when the lead ballooned to 4. They can be forgiven for resting their closer for the playoffs instead of trying to help out the Brewers by using him two nights in a row.
  14. The announcers are talking like the Brewers are headed to LA. Might not want to count those chickens yet.
  15. But you aren't down 0-4... Scoring 5 runs for this team at times is near impossible. Another aspect of this is that Peralta should have been on alert that he was going to be the first man out of the bullpen. So, he should have been mentally ready to come in on short notice. A late inning pitcher isn’t going to be prepared to come in about 2 hours before they would even start thinking about it.
  16. But again, Peralta hasn't pitched in a week. I think it is completely justifiable to expect a rusty appearance from Freddy there, and bringing him in with a runner at 3B is just asking for it. It isn't like he is coming in on normal rest and mental prosperity. He was inactive for a week, and his mind was more than likely on his new born and wife most of that week. I stand by my complaint, Peralta should not have been used with a runner on 3B and no outs. That was an obvious Williams situation. And I stand by my position. Williams comes in and strikes out the side, and you still have 6 innings to fill. The fact that Peralta was the choice says something about the other options. Maybe Yardley or Knebel if the goal is to try to get out of the third inning, but not Williams who you know you’re going to need if you have a chance to win at the end.
