I’ve had a lot of these discussions too. I have seen MANY times where running on contact works because of a brief bobble or rushed off target throw by the infielder. My observation is that the people who complain the loudest when a runner is thrown out at home are the same ones who say “why didn’t he score on that” when there is a bobble. In this case my guess is that the runner saw the hop and read it as going over the pitcher’s head and glove. Someone saying they run home on everything is just wrong. -

I wouldn’t call that unfortunate. A career minor leaguer like that knows what his role is and that if he does the job well while he’s with the big club, he will get a chance soon enough to become a regular part of the staff (here or somewhere else) when the inevitable openings arise. -

I would hope that professional athletes would have confidence in themselves. If they don’t they’re in the wrong business. Fans who have no ability to affect the outcome are in a completely different position.

The Brewers are pretty clearly in “closer by Committee” mode right now. It’s going to depend in part on situations and in part on who is available.

Solid D for Peralta’s outing today. Presented with the second most runs the Brewers have scored in the last 10 days he couldn’t even make it through 5 innings.

Did I say you were accusing me of anything? You mentioned “panicking” in connection with expressing an opinion about overuse of the bullpen. You didn’t quote anyone, but you must have thought somebody in this thread was panicking, and I don’t see that. I see people expressing reasonable and valid opinions.

You can be confident without saying that anyone who doesn’t share that confidence is panicking. There are points in between.

I can only speak for myself but I am not assuming that the pitchers in the bullpen will be the same all year. There’s no question that there are plenty of bodies to throw out there but the question is how effective they are going to be. And I don’t think that looking at how things happening in April might affect what happens in the future is “panicking”. If we aren’t supposed to look to the future maybe this board should be shut down until July or August.

I don’t think anyone is complaining about how effective the pitching has been so far. They have been able to win a significant number of games with very little offense. The concern is that the lack of runs combined with consistently short starts from the patchwork rotation is resulting in unsustainably heavy use of the bullpen, which is going to lead to problems down the road. I really don’t blame Murphy for how the bullpen is being used because the team is getting involved in so many close, low scoring games. I also think the lack of offense is due to the lack of quality major league caliber hitters, not the sometimes head scratching batting orders he uses. When a team is only getting 5 or 6 hits (or less) in a game, it’s going to be hard to score runs no matter what order the hitters are sent up.

Miley going for a second image on his elbow because the first was inconclusive does not sound encouraging. I’m not going to be shocked if he has a long term or season ending problem.

I think you also have to consider the cumulative effect of their usage so far. Most of them have already appeared in 10 games or more, and they can’t be doing that all season. Warming up and appearing in two games and throwing a total of 16 pitches is going to take more effort than throwing 16 pitches in one game. This heavy usage in April could come back to haunt the team in the form of injuries or loss of effectiveness down the road.

It might be tougher coming right back in a day game after pitching a high leverage inning the night before. That’s not much time to recover.
