I don’t think anyone is complaining about how effective the pitching has been so far. They have been able to win a significant number of games with very little offense.
The concern is that the lack of runs combined with consistently short starts from the patchwork rotation is resulting in unsustainably heavy use of the bullpen, which is going to lead to problems down the road.
I really don’t blame Murphy for how the bullpen is being used because the team is getting involved in so many close, low scoring games. I also think the lack of offense is due to the lack of quality major league caliber hitters, not the sometimes head scratching batting orders he uses.
When a team is only getting 5 or 6 hits (or less) in a game, it’s going to be hard to score runs no matter what order the hitters are sent up.
