    At least the Reds lost. The Cardinals are playing well and are chipping away.

    Burleson may be a butcher in the field but he provides power that the Brewers don’t get from their OF. A 2 run and 3 run HR today. After the Brewers beat the Cards for the 6th straight time on the day before Mother’s Day, who would have guessed that the Redbirds would have the best record in the NL over the next 6 weeks.

    I think I might lose it if they have Frelick hitting 5th and Ortiz 8th again. I usually don't fuss too much about the batting order because in most cases it doesn't matter that much. But putting a light hitter with minimal power in the 5th spot makes no sense when there are better options to place behind the team's best hitters. I think the value of religiously alternating LH and RH hitters has its limits. Personally, I would put Turang and Ortiz 1-2 against a RHP to increase the chances of getting at least one speedy runner on base ahead of the middle of the order. After Yelich I would put Contreras 4th and Adames 5th, but I don't see Murphy doing that. Having Frelick 5th highlights how badly this team needs a better LH hitter with some power to plug into that part of the order. Maybe they will be able to get someone like Santana to fill that role. Or maybe Mitchell could do it. but he hasn't been able to stay healthy long enough to know what he can contribute. Or maybe Black would fit better there when he plays I wonder if Frelick is playing as much as he is because they're giving him a chance to show that he deserves to stay when Mitchell comes back. There isn't room on the roster for all of Mitchell. Chourio, Perkins, and Frelick, and Frelick seems to me like the one who provides the least value.

    Maybe trying to keep runners out of scoring position and hoping for a two run HR.

    A downside to putting a weak hitter in the 5th spot where you might expect runners.. Would have liked to have Ortiz there instead of surrounding him with weak hitters.

    You can avoid stacking without literally going LRLRLRLRL. Putting a guy with an OPS of .650 fifth is bad enough to start with, but to me it’s absurd when you have someone with an OPS of .850 hitting eighth.

    Back to tonight’s game. The obsession with alternating lefties and righties is puzzling to me. I’d much rather see Ortiz higher in the order than Frelick.

    The Brewers have to be hard to predict or project because they are relying so heavily on players that don’t have much of a major league track record.

    On the run scoring, after scoring 87 runs in their unsustainably hot 10-3 start (6.69 RPG) the Brewers have scored 268 in their next 61 games (4.39 RPG). In June, they have scored 61 runs in 17 games (3.59 RPG). Given the steady downward trend in scoring over the last two months, a projection of 4.46 RPG the rest of the way doesn’t seem unreasonable. The pitching has been leading the team for the last few weeks, and apparently the projections don’t expect that to continue. So, they project the Brewers to go about .500 the rest of the way. Unless one of the other teams in the division can put something together, that could easily be good enough to win the division at 88-74.

    Arenado got hit in the elbow with a pitch in the 8th inning and walked of the field in obvious pain.

    Tough last of the 9th for Burleson in RF. First batter hits what looks like a routine fly ball, but he was playing almost at the track and got a bad jump and the ball dropped in. Then with 2 out and a runner on second there’s a line single to RF. Burleson fields it on one hop and it looks like there will be a play at the plate .But as he starts to throw the ball slips out of his hand. He retrieves it and tries to throw home, but it fell out of his hand again.

    I wouldn’t bet on “right after”. Based on the reports so far he’s more than 4 weeks away from pitching effectively in a major league game.

    Sad news indeed. . Ill never forget seeing him hit 4 HRs in a game against the Braves in 1961.

    They should make Frelick do push-ups on the field like Willie Mays Hays when he swings for the fences and hits weak 70 foot pop ups like he has in both of his ABs tonight.

    I hope this is good news and not the latest example of the Brewers playing shorthanded for 5 days before putting a player on the IL.

    Just as glad I won’t be able to watch the rest of this because of Father’s Day activities. Looking like another dreary day at the plate.

    Can’t be giving away runs like that when your own team is struggling to score.

    Noted. But, as we all know, money drives everything, not competitive fairness. The old system won’t be back any sooner than the Big 10 having 10 teams who all play each other in football almost every year.

    Murphy said something yesterday in his postgame comments that everyone who follows the Brewers closely already knows. The Brewers have not been the best version of themselves the last few weeks. Every game and series win they can get while fighting through this stretch will pay dividends later. A series win would be a good springboard heading into one of those western trips that have often been troublesome for Brewers teams over the years.

    Nice quick win at the ballpark today. Good to get a win while the offense continues to struggle. Some times all it takes is one big hit. The most striking thing was how crisp the defense was, starting with Chourio’s running catch on the first hitter, and then several nice plays from the infield, including the two DPs that required quick handling all around. That’s 3 straight wins for the games we’ve attended, each one marked by a big 3 run HR and not much other offense.The others were Hoskins against the Cardinals and Chourio against the Sox.

    This is a starting pitching mismatch Abbott dominated the Brewers in 3 of his 4 starts against them last year, and the way the Brewers have been hitting against starters he could be in for another big outing.
