    Dodgers fans call for robots as Kuechel gets a gift on a 3-0 pitch that would have walked in a run and led to who knows what. I guess that the first 3 pitches were so far off that a pitch only a couple inches low looked like a bullseye.

    It shouldn’t be difficult if tennis can have technology that provides instant pictures of challenged line calls and shows the pictures on the scoreboard.

    If you think it’s important to prove or disprove the accuracy of other posters’ off the cuff comments I think you should take on that assignment. I doubt if too many people would care about it though.

    I guess the point is that with Ortiz out, and several players slumping, the Brewers already have a pretty weak lineup, as evidenced by their being one of the lowest scoring teams in the league since June 1. Having one of the best hitters (Contreras) also out makes the lineup even weaker.

    The Cards have been in striking distance for quite awhile. They have methodically trimmed down the 9 game deficit they had in mid May.

    A Sunday lineup backing a washed up pitcher. Need one of those illogical baseball results to salvage this one. Has all the makings of a Dodger rout.

    In their last 5 games in this park, including this one, the Brewers have managed 18 hits.

    I’m not sure that aggregate istatistics about the performance of the bullpen in blocks of 30 games really addresses concerns about the current state of the pen. I think the concerns now are based largely on the fact that Milner, Payamps, and Peguero, have all been less effective recently than they were earlier in the season. Maybe that has nothing to do with the workload they’ve carried, but it is a legitimate question. The bullpen stats are a little misleading if they include innings contributed by Wilson or anyone else who comes in in the second inning after an opener. Also, any positive contributions made by Koenig and Parades are not relevant to the evaluation of the pen now as they are on the IL. As long as the starters are only going to be covering five innings or less in most games, and the pitchers who are covering the remaining innings are being asked to pitch several times a week, there are going to be questions about long term wear and tear. There isn’t a lot of confidence right now in some of the pitchers being asked to protect leads without using Hudson and Megill too much. On this subject, has there been any more information on Williams this week. The last I heard was last weekend when he had a bullpen session, but I haven’t heard anything about how he bounced back from that session and what the next steps will be.

    I thought the Nats might have a chance to knock off the Cards when they jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, but those hopes are being dashed as the Cards came back with 4 in the top of the third. The Nats couldn’t hold on to a 5-0 lead last night either.

    In one form or another every game is on national TV. And tonight’s shares the Fox stage with Braves-Phillies which will probably go to more of the country.

    Boston is hardly a small market. And the way they translate calls into costing a team runs seems pretty iffy.

    I went to bed when the Dodgers tied the game in the seventh so I didn’t have to deal with whatever anger I might have had over a pitch on the very edge of the strike zone being called a ball even though several pitches wider than that had been called strikes. But I think focusing too much on that just pulls attention from the two much bigger issues that produced that loss. The bullpen wearing down, as mentioned by the previous poster, is one. The other is that the offense, continuing its recent struggles, got four hits all night, two of them on the infield, and the only one after Hoskins HR was promptly erased by a pickoff. Once the Dodgers tied the game there seemed to be little reason to think the Brewers were going to be able to both score at least one run and hold the Dodgers for at least two innings. They hadn’t even had a scoring chance since the GS. Maybe the umpire not calling that strike saved the Brewers from using up more of their bullpen in what might have been a lost cause. The Brewers offense never put itself into a position where one questionable call would have helped them.

    My point is that teams probably go 12-22 in their first games in LA mainly because the Dodgers are usually really good, not because the opponent is messed up by a change in environment.

    I agree with you. That was more of a line drive over his head than the kind of towering fly that lets a fielder get back to the fence to make the catch. In a normal park that would be a double crashing off the wall and you wouldn’t be thinking it should have been caught.

    They’re trying to make a point about teams going directly from Colorado to LA and being 12-22 in their first games. They’re saying that playing at Coors destroys the bullpen and that’s why teams do,so poorly. Considering how good the Dodgers have been, 12-22 probably isn’t significantly worse than opponents overall record there.

    Considering how poorly the Brewers have fared at Coors in recent years, going 2-2 isn’t too bad. But, the offense really had a poor series considering the park and the pitching they were facing.

    Mitchell fouled off the one pitch he had to hit.

    No reason to worry about losing the DH when that spot in the order isn’t coming up again unless you score a few runs. And if it does come up you pinch hit again.

    Pirates Jared Jones placed on IL so Brewers won’t be facing him next week.

    Between this park and the state of the Brewers bullpen a few more runs would be welcome. We’re likely to see Payamps and he needs a cushion.
