  1. Aguilar may only be safe until the 5th starter is needed. Choi is interesting to me. If you compare him to Aguilar by minor league stats, which is the largest sample size, he has been vastly better. Choi a career 305 avg, 402 obp, and 900 ops. Now they may have spent more or less time in hitter friendly leagues or cities or whatever. I didn't take the time to compare that in depth.
  2. It also appears Brandon Woodruff will start in the bullpen, but will likely be the 5th starter once necessary. If Woodruff is the 5th starter why keep him in the pen? Are they actually going to use him in the first week? If not it would make far more sense to send him down until needed. Even making 1 start in CO to stay stretched out and on schedule would make sense.
  3. Isn't Logan already injured? Thought something happened with him the same day Miley got hurt, but haven't heard an update on him.
  4. I would prefer Villar, Perez, Aguilar. I know there is almost no chance that happens though. I expect Aguilar to stay until the 5th starter is needed. Would be nice to have him even exclusively as a PH but know that's not realistic in the NL
  5. Just saw it reported on ESPN. Got hit with a comebacker. Big blow to the Giants, but should help other NL teams. Updated story says pinky which is probably the best possible spot. It originally just said hand. The pinky not overly involved in pitching but still listed as 6-8 weeks. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22887661/san-francisco-giants-pitcher-madison-bumgarner-had-leave-friday-game-taking-line-drive-left-hand
  6. Suter was used in so many ways last year, he wasn't asked to go deep into games for most of the season. But you know what, here's what he did in July when he was starting consistently: 6.0 6.1 4.2 6.0 7.0 So not only CAN he do it, he has done it. And if 6 innings is what qualifies as a "#3" then Chase Anderson must be a 4/5 since he only averaged a tad higher than 5.5 innings pitched per start. Yea, I don't know why so many people think he's not capable of going 6 innings. A lot of his short starts were by design or predetermined. They were stretching him out at one point, then limiting innings late in the year. He had starts where he was dealing and had fairly low pitch counts at 5 innings and was pulled. I think he's far more capable than given credit for.
  7. I'm glad we didn't give Cobb that or more. We probably could have afforded it, but for what improvements? Especially over 4 years. It takes away any flexibility that we have. What if we sign him then have a position player pull a Villar of last year and need a bullpen piece or two? There's no way we would afford deadline additions. Then in 19-21 we are paying him 15 per for stats that Woodruff and Burnes can match. I believe our rotation can hold up and now we still have deadline flexibility. Dodged a bullet as far as I'm concerned.
  8. Never Outhustled..... read Mr. Allens post on page 7 of the Braun willing to play 1st and 2nd base thread. Brauns stats stack up much better than you would think compared to Yellich, Cain, and Santana.
  9. You're making an argument that Pina is more productive than Braun??? Was that supposed to be in blue?
  10. The comments from Braun about squatting more and being harder on his back all came from like the first or second day of spring training didn't they? I have not heard anything from him since that time about playing first being more physically demanding. In fact in that same interview I think he said that he thought in the long run it would be less wear and tear on his body. I think that might have gotten over blown a little bit just because it was the first actual feedback from him playing first, and that is what everyone was going into spring wanting to see.
  11. There is a definite top 5 and huge drop off for the bottom. Don't think the drop off is that huge. Arica has been steadily improving with the bat, and Villar bound to rebound, just a matter of how much. I never liked pitchers batting 8th, but it kind of makes sense with either Villar or Arcia batting in front of the top of the order. Kind of like Villar, catcher, pitcher, Arcia. Let Villar run and take chances with catcher pitcher up, then let Arcia hit before the top of the order. If he can hit .275 even that's a lot more RBI chances for Cain and Yellich.
  12. I keep posting that I don't care about ST stats, but I dislike Knebel giving up a run every time out. Hopefully put up a few scoreless innings as spring closes.
  13. Why are you spending so much time arguing about piggyback rotations when nobody from the Brewers organization ever said anything about it being a possibility or even thought about for that matter. It should be a non issue because there is ZERO chance that it ever happens. This spring training thread has drifted vastly off of where they typically go. Where are all of the pictures and feedback from how guys looked live? Did all of the usual spring training attendees take the year off? I greatly looked forward to feedback on how guys look in spring, especially pitchers. I trust the eyeball test over looking at random ST stat lines that can be greatly skewed depending on what each individual is working on.
  14. See the MJS has an article that Anderson announced as the opening day starter
  15. Trading Broxton now would be selling at rock bottom. Coming off a down year with his Avg and striking out a ton. Also every team in the league knows we have a log jam in front of him. Why would any team give up anything of value for him?
  16. I think there is zero chance that Barnes gets sent down to start the year.
  17. With Miley, Guerra, and Suter all looking serviceable so far in ST the Brewers probably are not willing to move off of their number. We only need 2 of the 3 I listed to fill out the rotation. Would have the 3rd, along with Woodruff, Wilkerson, and Gallardo all as depth options. If the Brewers offense, defense, and beginning of the year bullpen are ahead of last year, anything respectable from our 4/5 starters would get us to the All-Star break still in contention. Is this the longest thread there has been on this site? If not the longest, it has to be pretty close by now.
  18. Thames only led off 16 times, but he also hit second a bunch... and mostly with Villar's mendoza line OBP in front of him. If he would have hit 4/5 in the order I think the RBI totals would have risen a bit. Baserunning also factors in for me. Not just how many outs or where we ranked league wide, but where and when the outs were made.
  19. They are not going to add just to add. If they have a chance to upgrade at their price they will. I'm sure they have a set number for every available player. Buying just to add or to try to keep up with higher payrolls just jeopardizes the future. I'm fine with them being diligent, and slightly frugal. Waiting till the deadline gives you the advantage of knowing how your players are performing in the first half, and knowing what holes need to be filled.
  20. Guerra hasn't pitched his way out of contention yet I don't think. I want Suter in the rotation but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the pen to start the year.
  21. I feel like a lot of people are under-valuing our current rotation. They aren't aces but Arrietta isn't an ace anymore either. With the offense and defense we have our pitchers can be very successful. I'm glad we don't have 25 mil per year tied up in 1 player... That's 1/4 of our entire payroll.
  22. Compare what Lynn and Arrietta do this year and I bet it's not 37 million better than our 4/5. I don't think the back end of our rotation will be that bad. That's 1/3 of our payroll and your really only getting the difference between them and our 4/5 Arrieta isn’t a 4/5. He’s projected to be 1+ win better than any starting pitcher on our roster. If we had signed Lynn and Arrietta like you suggested it would have bumped our 4/5 out of the rotation. Hence their value would be the difference between them and our current 4/5.
  23. Compare what Lynn and Arrietta do this year and I bet it's not 37 million better than our 4/5. I don't think the back end of our rotation will be that bad. That's 1/3 of our payroll and your really only getting the difference between them and our 4/5
  24. With Lynn and Arrietta off the market, Cobb should follow soon. His list of suitors growing smaller though. Has anyone seen if they are expecting to be ready for the start of the season? Would imagine they have been on their own throwing programs, but would be cutting it close in theory.
  25. You think that our current roster doesn't even put us in ballpark of contention?
