  1. The Packers have placed Sternberger on IR and have promoted Lazard to the active roster. Good move IMO, they probably were not going to use Sternberger early in the season anyways. This lets him heal the ankle completely, and continue to develop without burning up a roster spot. Wouldn't shock me if there was a team interested in Lazard and GB figured they would need to protect him anyways.
  2. The biggest moment of the year and we have Spangenberg and Shaw hit back to back. This roster still not real deep and somehow still in the thick of it.
  3. He was getting down the line, didn’t think he was that fast honestly.
  4. People think it would be silly to consider signing Cole so... No, people realize the Brewers can’t give out a 250 million dollar contract to a pitcher in his 30’s for most of it.
  5. Cubs still scoreless through 4 today. Hope the streak keeps growing.
  6. I don't know, there were reports out of NY that he was being released. You wouldn't think a player about to be cut could garner a lot unless GB knew they would not have high enough waiver priority to get him. My guess would be a 6th or 7th. I went to the Giants message boards out of curiosity. Nobody really heartbroken he’s gone. Sounds like Davis and Connely had passed him on the depth chart. They refer to him more as a thumper against the run but slow and can’t cover. Most on their boards were guessing a 7th coming back. Then the thread on big blue interactive derailed. Like way off the rails. Made me appreciate BF. Edit: Crawford being released to clear the roster spot.
  7. Packers have traded for ILB BJ Goodson from the Giants.
  8. It worked well last year because we had a lot of guys throwing extremely well. It will be curious to see how it works this year if he uses the same approach. Our bullpen has so many guys that are ticking time bombs at any given moment. It seems like if your plan is to throw 6 guys per night out of the pen, you’re bound to find someone who gets knocked around. To their credit they have thrown well lately, but not sure that group holds up for the month of September under heavy use.
  9. Only real surprise to me is that they didn’t pick up some help at ILB. Hopefully means they’re confident Burks absence will be a short one. Glad to essentially get all of our bubble guys back on the PS. Especially Lazard and Nijman.
  10. That’s a horrible ejection. He dropped his bat, but never said a word. Timmons needs to check the ego.
  11. Can’t imagine it would be a straight swap when it could potentially (heck I will go likely) a worse 7th for us. A few different sites say an undisclosed swap of draft picks. Edit: The more I read it’s just the option to swap 7th rounders if theirs is higher... so good chance we get nothing back...?
  12. ESB to the IR today is puzzling. Seems like it would have been keeping more options open to IR him tomorrow. We’re pretty deep at receiver, but that would have been a little insurance against injuries. Can he return to practice at some point at least? If he’s not allowed to even practice the entire season that’s a tough pill to swallow. He should come back bigger/stronger for sure, but that’s a ton of practice reps to miss this year.
  13. McCray was actually traded to the Browns not released. We swap 7th rounders with the Browns. He reunites with Campen.
  14. Lazard released, also a PS candidate
  15. Just saw Nijman was released, hopefully can get him to PS
  16. The other odd aspect of this discussion is the 4 game red shirt rule. If that’s not in place Mertz gets the 4th quarter last night. Now they didn’t want to burn a game with a quarter of mop up duty just in case he red shirts and even then if he’s as good as billed he might go pro after 3 anyways making it a moot point. That rule changes how kids are used early for sure.
  17. Clemson didn’t have an issue doing it with Lawrence and he’s the best QB recruit to come out of high school in probably a decade.
  18. It could also go the other way quickly though. QB psychology is a touchy thing. He takes a beating early on and he might not ever progress the same. More than any other position in any other sport, slowly working your way in ala Rodgers with the Packers just seems to be the right approach. Even look at Lawrence with Clemson last year. The reports out of camp were that Mertz was struggling until recently. To me, let him get fully comfortable.
  19. We are getting close to 3:00 pm with a lot of names to come out yet.
  20. LeSean McCoy cut by Buffalo. I haven’t seen anything on him in the pre season to know what he’s got left in the tank or what he’d demand salary wise, but if he could be a 3rd down back he could still be useful.
  21. I didn’t mean to start a Nelson debate, other than the two early coverages he played pretty well. I was simply pointing out that one guy made two mistakes in the first few minutes of the first game and flew totally under the radar, while another made two mistakes in the same time frame and 4 people posted they were done with him. Fair or not Coan will be under a gigantic microscope this year. Coan screams game manager to me right now. If a team like Michigan stacks the box and shuts down or limits Taylor, then we’ll see if he can make enough plays with his arm. If not, people will be screaming for Mertz and the upside of that arm talent. The OL looked shaky at times. They said there were 10 TFLs and that was early 4th quarter I believe. They have a wealth of options there, so you have to think that gets ironed out one way or another. With the two walk ons starting at G there are some pretty high recruits waiting in the wings. You have to think someone steps up, it’s not like the DL last year where they literally ran out of bodies. Speaking of the DL, the biggest weakness last year was a strength last night. Those young guys along the front were STOUT. We’ll see how they hold up against a power run game in the Big 10, but that front 7 looked great last night.
  22. Watson looks good. Groshek seemed very under utilized compared to last year. Also good to see Shaw back healthy.
  23. I think Coan will eventually get replaced by Mertz this year, but I have no issue with Coan getting this start. No need to put the Frosh in till he’s fully ready. Don’t need to put him in a situation where he struggles early. Nelson let two receivers get by him early in the first and was only saved by two flat out drops. Nobody is calling for him to be replaced. Our historically inaccurate passing QBs on good teams and a highly touted recruit behind him sure casts Coan in a different light.
  24. Looked like Cephus was in on the 3rd play of the game. And now comes up with the first catch of the game... involved early. Apparently he was accurate with his claims of being in great shape. He didn’t have a ton of days of practice, but apparently game ready. I don’t view South Florida as a cupcake, and that was a very impressive opening drive.
