  1. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think he might be the first pitcher since the DSL team was brought back to make it up to Milwaukee. He only had two appearances there, but it counts.
  2. That's too bad. It seemed like there was going to be a lot of AZL playing time available to him this year. Hopefully it is just a short-term thing.
  3. Was apparent that they thought they might have something in him when he got the spring training invite. Hopefully he is this year's Topa.
  4. It wouldn't shock me to see any of those first three pitchers for Nashville added to the 40-man at some point this season.
  5. I can almost guarantee that if the Brewers take a hitter in the first round that player will be announced as an up-the-middle position (the top-ranked third base prospects seem to be prep shortstops who will eventually have to move over and the college first basemen don't pop up until the third round area in the rankings).
  6. Not first round picks, but guys like Alec Bettinger, Nick Bennett, Taylor Floyd & Arman Sabouri were recent picks that fit the general profile of command over raw stuff college pitcher with results in a major conference. True, but if you are digging deeper into the draft you will find examples of all types (Brady Schanuel for example was more stuff than results based). They have spent more picks in the top 5 rounds on upside JUCO pitchers recently than on 4-year college pitchers. While there is certainly a good case that the draft will be pitching heavy simply from an organizational standpoint, looking at the early picks of recent years, it seems like they are giving outsized importance to the Small pick when making their prediction because it was the one that was considered a reach at the time.
  7. And by this they mean the Brewers drafted Ethan Small, right? I mean unless I am forgetting someone, he is the only four-year college pitcher the Brewers have drafted in the first five rounds since the Webb-Burnes-Brown trifecta.
  8. Well, there's a blast from the past.
  9. I know I've said it before, but three of the largest "reaches" in that draft class based off of mocks were the three tight ends who got the H-back label. It could very well be a case where the mock drafters and prospect rankers were going off one set of positional values and the NFL teams were going off of another.
  10. Ashby will probably get a shot first, but I know Francis had gotten some likely bullpen scouting reports in past years, so he could be a candidate there as well. It was nice to have a stellar night from him. In a year where it seems most of the Brewers pitching prospects are either exceeding or falling short of expectations, he'd been just kind of been meeting them so far.
  11. That is a way to make a high-A debut. I was just thinking earlier today about how all the guys likely to shoot up the prospect lists for the Brewers this season are hitters (Gray, Howell, Ward, Hamilton, etc.) and that we needed a breakthrough pitcher. Maybe it is Bullock. Also, seven innings, no hits, no walks, 11 Ks thus far for Luna. Welcome back Carlos.
  12. It’s great to see Small and Ashby pitching better, especially since it seems like 80% of the Brewers other top pitching prospects are hurt.
  13. Kirby is a nice story, but the results outside of the ERA only look so-so. Ashby is the low-hanging fruit here, and Cousins is interesting just because it seems like they have been treating him like a legitimate prospect. If there is more of an out-of-nowhere one, I'd go Francis over Kirby.
  14. Ward's been really good as of late. I thought one of him, Howell and Abreu were going to break out two years ago. It looks like two of them might be doing it this year. Between Ward, Howell and Mitchell at Wisconsin and Gray down at Carolina, some of those toolsy outfield prospects are really hitting lately.
  15. Thanks. I was looking at the player list today and agree that there aren't nearly enough arms available for two AZL teams. But I also noted about 26 position players who need a home at AZL (assuming top-rated young guys like Quero, Medina, etc. don't get sent to the DSL) or perhaps an exit. I'll be pulling for guys like Eduarqui Fernandez and Reidy Mercado to make an early jump to Carolina. Interesting, I've got 17 on my tally, although I might have missed a couple. I'm assuming 1. Any Latin American signing not on the minor league spring training roster is DSL-bound 2. The trio of the catchers not named Quero who haven't made their debut yet were only in camp as extra catchers and will be on DSL rosters. 3. Any guy who probably would have been on a full season roster and didn't play in any of the spring training games is probably hurt (Pablo Abreu, Drew Smith). I've got Catchers: Quero, Cabrera Infielders: Garcia, Parra, Roa, Jaraba, Chirinos, Hardin, Pitre Outfielders: Perez, Fernandez, Medina, Doston, Ernesto, Mercado, Wilson, Valdez
  16. Hopefully they can keep it up once Kannapolis leaves town, but it is good to see a lot of those guys starting to hit. Gray and Martinez are the obvious ones, but guys like Campbell, Hall and McGee are having really nice seasons as well.
  17. A few days ago, Mass Haas mentioned that we're sharing a DSL team with Toronto this year, as newly signed Fraudy Maldonado was assigned there. https://www.milb.com/player/fraudy-maldonado-691699 Also, I'm hoping that those saying that we'll only have 1 AZL team turn out to be wrong, but I guess we'll just have to see. We cut deep enough last year that we've actually been adding a number of players recently, which is a heckuva lot more enjoyable than letting guys go. If the plan is still to have the 2021 draft class not debut until instructs, it shouldn't be that big of a stretch if the spring training rosters are any indication of how conservative they are being with bringing DSL guys over. You've probably got about your standard-size rookie league group of hitters right now for one team and might have to add a couple of pitchers to make even one team work.
  18. I'm glad he's back. When he was healthy, all he did was get guys out.
  19. Yah, final season was easily the weakest in my opinion, but I did like the very end (was it a montage? It has been too long since I watched it) because I thought it worked well thematically for the show (take the rare wins where you can, but it doesn't stop the cycle from keeping on repeating).
  20. As I rule I don't usually pay that much attention to A-ball relievers, but man Evan Reifert striking out I think seven of the first nine batters he has faced is a way to start a career.
  21. It would be nice if he'd take a big leap. The Brewers seemed really high on him two years ago with the aggressive placement.
  22. Couple of successful returns. Glad to see Nathan Kirby throw a scoreless inning, but man, for a guy who hasn't pitched in an official game since 2017, Brendan Murphy sure made his presence known tonight. Three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
  23. That Wisconsin team should be fun. Even the pitching staff, which doesn't really have a top prospect, has four of the better "sleeper" starting pitchers in the system (Castaneda, Jarvis, Olson and, even though he wasn't stellar tonight, Bennett) plus the bullpen has a mixture of fairly high draft picks (Walters, Floyd), high strikeout guys (Schanuel) and good stories (Patterson, LaRossa). If only Kelly was healthy to join the mix. Oh, and if Sanchez does reach Milwaukee, he wouldn't be the first Brewers pitcher to rise from their DSL team to the big leagues for Milwaukee, would he? I didn't think Wily Peralta pitched there and I'm coming up with a blank for other names. There must have been one, but it isn't coming to me.
  24. Maybe I just have a low tolerance for personality-driven drama. The whole siding with management vs. players argument rings a bit false to me if only because "management vs." usually implies a collective and make no mistake this is all about Rodgers. What about all the Packers draft picks who were denied their moment in the sun because Rodgers sucked all the oxygen out of the room? What about Malik Taylor, the guy who likely edged out Kumerow for the last spot, knowing that your team leader was fuming that you weren't cut instead simply because you weren't one of his buddies? What about Love, who he is pretty much guaranteeing is going to have to go through all the negative stuff that Rodgers did when he started out? What about that am I supposed to be supporting?
  25. So, demanding ultimate respect while according none?
