  1. Well, their 5 and 6 ranked prospects on MLB.com are both 3B. Lohse has played for LaRussa before.
  2. LouisEly: I think you know Michigan has been a powerhouse in the past. Yes, they are weakened right now but not because they stiffened any academic requirements. UW football has never achieved the things Michigan has. As a UW alum, I am very satisfied with how they have done in the Alvarez era. This only reinforces my point, however, that this is not about academic standards. Every school that struggles in sports makes the same claims.
  3. Cross off Nyjer Morgan. Signed in Korea: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/ex-brewer-nyjer-morgan-signs-in-south-korea-b99411729z1-286306981.html
  4. Yes, those were SAT scores from the link somebody gave above. Do you really think UW is more selective than Michigan? My point is that they haven't been and Michigan has still been a national power virtually every year until some bad coaching decisions. Whatever UW's problems are, I believe being too academically selective is way down there. Why was GA going after JUCO guys anyway? They have really limited that in the past. I don't remember UM having many JUCO guys either. At least in the past. Okay, Michigan is in a better recruiting area close to Chicago, Ohio, Detroit and Pennsylvania. They also have done better in the South than UW, probably because they were a national power. Still, academics should be a strength and UW should tailor their recruiting to take advantage of that rather than going after marginal academic recruits.
  5. LouisEly: Michigan 1148/1264 UW 1065/1207. I don't believe it's about admissions policies. Midwest has simply declined economically versus other regions of the country. Midwest doesn't have speed players as they do in warmer climes. It's hard to recruit players from Florida, California, Texas, etc. where most of the speed comes from. In any case, Michigan, while down lately, I would say because of bad coaching hires, has been a national power with just as high standards as UW.
  6. My impression the last couple of years is that he tends to fall off at the end of the year like a lot of younger players. Maybe due to not eating right or something. Anyway at Wisconsin splits: 1st half .435 2nd half .366 in slg pct. at Brevard: .410/382 so there is some truth in that. His June Wisconsin year at .646 was his best. Can he duplicate that again? At Brevard his best month was in April at .470. He has superior fielding and running skills. Hopefully, he can improve power wise and I think he will.
  7. http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/12031896/chase-headley-agrees-deal-new-york-yankees Yankees are going on the cheap to compete with the Red Sox.
  8. Harper just signed a two year deal. It will avoid arbitration but this shows again that bad feelings can come out of these situations. Also, Williams is going to switch Harper to right and Werth to left (assuming Jason is out of prison by Spring).
  9. I like Tyler too but he has never thrown more than 90 innings in a season and that back in 2011. He can't seem to stay healthy.
  10. Harper is in the process of appealing his contract. Hence the no-show at NatsFest. Boras is his agent and is undoubtedly pulling the strings behind the scenes. The Brewers would be wise to steer clear unless they got a favorable deal. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/bryce-harper-skips-natsfest-three-days-before-arbitration-grievance-hearing/2014/12/13/43c412d0-8270-11e4-b005-b260c9ec5217_story.html Harper waited until the last minute to sign his initial contract. I think he may have been screwed by Boras' attempts to squeeze out every last penny. In any case, that's what's causing the hold up. Whether he should be super 2 or not.
  11. Looks like Chryst is in: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/badgers/paul-chryst-set-to-be-next-wisconsin-badgers-head-coach-b99407675z1-285582351.html My take on GA is that he is a good coach but just mismatched at UW like RichRod was at Michigan. You have to understand the players able to be recruited at UW and what that means for strategy. I don't think GA ever figured that out. Could be bringing Joe Rudolph as offensive coordinater, which he is doing at Pitt now and Bob Bostad as offensive line coach, who is now with the Tennessee Titans. I think this would be good news because the Badgers would be going back to the type of game which has been successful there.
  12. The drawback likely would have happened anyway. Having Gordon masked a lot of the rot which has set in.
  13. Another Lind buster. Doug's strategy may be in trouble. Seriously, I hope Theo Epstein continues to go the expensive free agent route.
  14. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/103608632/sources-pirates-sign-pitcher-francisco-liriano-to-three-year-contract 31 years old. Adam Lind buster?
  15. Not to worry. Sounds like RR is happy with Jimenez as the RH 1B, back up 3B because he once had a good fielding series against the Brewers: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/for-brewers-manager-ron-roenicke-next-season-is-new-page-b99404892z1-285172111.html
  16. Craig, AA .304/.373/.494 Jason Rogers last year AA & AAA: .296/.365/.489 Pass at the price. Just give Rogers a chance. Not many at bats there anyway, according to Doug. If they trade a starter they need to get a 3B who can start next year.
  17. Delmonico had his career best BA last year at .262 but also his worst OBP at .300. He didn't show much power. I think at this point he can't really be relied on. They need a 3B prospect bad. Maybe Lara down the road but he is at least 3-4 years away I would think. Middlebrooks could available, he has nowhere to go but he was also pretty much a failure with the Red Sox.
  18. Jason Werth: nice guy. http://wtop.com/149/3756862/Jayson-Werth-in-court-on-reckless-driving Looks like he got 10 days jail of which 5 should be served. Driving 105 in a 55 zone.
  19. He was .276/.342/.386/.728 in a favorable ball park. Kris Davis OPS was .756. Markakis is 5 years older. I don't think it's a particularly good deal for the Braves. Markakis, while not a bad fielder, is no gold glover either.
  20. Tyler Glasnow: 1.74 ERA, 1.054 Whip, 2.75 K/BB Tyler Wagner: 1.86, 1.107, 2.46 Okay, Wagner is 2 years older and less "prospecty". Still, not much difference there.
  21. Happy Thanksgiving! First white Thanksgiving in the 16 years I have lived here in the Blue Ridge.
  22. But they still haven't signed Lester. Time to shop Lohse/Gallardo?
  23. With Segura and Arcia, it's likely Rivera will never play much for the Brewers. He could still be trade bait though. SS with his fielding ability are not that common, although he still probably makes too many errors. He also has some pop at the plate. I could definitely see him as fodder in some future trade.
  24. Gotta call you out on this one DHonks. Schafer: .292/.354/.433 Wren: .304/.362/.398 Schafer's numbers in the minors were fine. While Wren has had slightly better OBP, it comes at the expense of power. If the Brewers consistently had players who could put up the numbers Schafer has in the numbers I might agree with you but they haven't. Maybe he is what we've seen in Milwaukee but I suspect it has more to do with the way Roenicke has used (not) him.
  25. The Cardinals won a World Series with Jeff Suppan as their ace. In other division news, the Cubs are looking at Jordan Zimmerman? http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/wp/2014/11/11/nationals-cubs-reportedly-talking-jordan-zimmermann/ It looks like the Red Sox are going for Sandoval. http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/11861086/boston-red-sox-making-big-push-sign-free-agent-pablo-sandoval Maybe the Brewers should target Red Sox young 3Bmen as suggested many times in other threads.
